McDonald's restaurant hiring has four steps: find a job and apply with Olivia, McDonald's virtual recruiting assistant; complete any assessment the restaurant uses; interview; and get an offer. McDonald's says the application "takes just a few minutes" and that some restaurants let you schedule your interview at the same time.
The catch is that every restaurant hires for itself. McDonald's says hiring is handled at the store level, and that the majority of its restaurants are run by independent franchisees who make their own employment decisions. Everything below comes from McDonald's careers pages and FAQ, plus one NBC News report, linked as we go.
The McDonald's hiring process at a glance
| Step | What happens | What McDonald's says about timing |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Find a job and apply with Olivia | Search U.S. restaurant jobs at jobs.mchire.com, from Crew to Management; McDonald's virtual recruiting assistant answers questions and walks you through the application. Corporate roles are at careers.mcdonalds.com. | "Just a few minutes" |
| 2. Assessment | NBC News reported that McHire uses Traitify personality tests. McDonald's doesn't say which restaurants use them. | Not published |
| 3. Interview | If you're qualified, some restaurants let you book the interview while you apply. | Not published |
| 4. Offer and orientation | The restaurant makes the offer. Orientation varies by role. | Not published |
What is the McDonald's hiring process?
You search for a restaurant job, apply through Olivia, may take an assessment, interview with the restaurant, and receive an offer from the restaurant if you're selected. Because each restaurant hires for itself, the details differ from one location to the next.
Company-owned or franchised: why it matters
There are two kinds of McDonald's restaurant: those owned by McDonald's and those independently owned and operated by franchisees. On its careers site, McDonald's says the franchisee "is alone responsible for all employment matters" in their restaurant, including hiring and scheduling, and that if you're hired at a franchised restaurant "the franchisee will be your employer, not McDonald's". McDonald's values page says the majority of its restaurants are run by independent franchisees.
In practice, that means:
- Age rules vary. McDonald's FAQ says hiring policies on age may differ between company-owned and franchised restaurants, and tells you to contact the restaurant.
- Your status sits with the restaurant. To check your application or update it, McDonald's says to contact the restaurant where you applied.
- Benefits vary. McDonald's says each benefit and perk is available for certain positions and may vary by location.
Applying with Olivia
On jobs.mchire.com, McDonald's introduces Olivia as its virtual recruiting assistant. Olivia helps you search for a job, answers questions and walks you through the application. McDonald's says it "takes just a few minutes and if qualified, some restaurants can also schedule your interview at the same time". NBC News reported in July 2025 that McDonald's uses Olivia to answer candidate questions and schedule interviews.

Does McDonald's have an assessment?
Some applicants take one. NBC News reported in July 2025 that McHire, McDonald's hiring platform, "also uses Traitify, another Paradox product that conducts personality tests with applicants". McDonald's own applicant privacy statement, which covers McDonald's Corporation and McDonald's USA, lists the results of "work-related assessments" among the information it may collect.
McDonald's doesn't publish what the assessment contains, how long it takes or how it's scored. A personality test has no right answers to memorise; answer honestly and consistently. Our guide to psychometric assessments explains how personality questionnaires work in general.
What is the McDonald's interview like?
The restaurant interviews you. McDonald's doesn't publish the format, length or questions, and they vary by restaurant. Its applicant privacy statement mentions collecting your "availabilities to schedule an in person interview" and, in some cases, video recordings of interviews.
McDonald's careers site says restaurants hire "across all levels, from Crew team members through Management". Expect a crew interview to focus on your availability, how you treat customers and how you work with a team. For a shift manager role, expect questions on running a shift and leading people.
How long does the McDonald's hiring process take?
McDonald's doesn't publish a timeline. The application takes a few minutes, and some restaurants let you book the interview at the same time, but each restaurant sets its own pace. If you haven't heard back, McDonald's employment FAQ says to contact the restaurant where you applied and speak to the hiring manager.
What happens after the McDonald's interview?
If you're selected, the restaurant offers you the job. For McDonald's Corporation and McDonald's USA applicants, the applicant privacy statement says McDonald's may run background checks and other pre-employment screenings, such as drug and alcohol testing. Franchisees set their own policies.
Orientation depends on the role. McDonald's FAQ says training "content, format and length varies".
Common McDonald's interview questions and how to answer them
McDonald's doesn't publish its interview questions. The ones below are the topics a restaurant hiring manager is likely to cover, matched to McDonald's published values: Serve, Inclusion, Integrity, Family and Community. Answer the "tell me about a time" questions in STAR form (situation, task, action, result); our STAR method guide shows how.
1. Why do you want to work at McDonald's?
Be specific and honest. McDonald's careers site talks about flexible scheduling, teamwork and training, and its Archways to Opportunity programme helps employees finish high school, earn a college degree or learn English. If one of those matters to you, say so.
2. What is your availability?
Give an exact, honest answer. McDonald's pitches flexible scheduling to students, parents and night owls, so the manager will want to know which shifts you can reliably work.
3. Tell me about a time you gave someone great service.
McDonald's first value is "We put our customers and people first". Choose a story where you helped someone quickly and kindly, and say what happened as a result.
4. How would you handle an angry customer?
Show that you'd stay calm, listen, apologise, fix the order or get a manager, and keep things moving. A real example from any job, volunteering or school works.
5. How do you handle a fast-paced, busy shift?
McDonald's value "We get better together" fits here: talk about staying focused on one task at a time, communicating with the team and keeping your area clean as you go. Give an example of a busy moment you handled well.
6. Tell me about a time you worked as part of a team.
McDonald's lists "We get better together" as a value. Pick an example where you helped a teammate or covered a gap.
7. What would you do if you saw a co-worker doing something unsafe or dishonest?
This tests McDonald's value "We do the right thing". Say you'd speak up, follow the rules and tell a manager if needed. Keep it practical.
8. How do you make people from different backgrounds feel welcome?
McDonald's value "We open our doors to everyone" covers customers and colleagues. Give a real example of including someone or helping a person who was new or struggling.
9. What are your strengths and weaknesses?
McDonald's value "We put our customers and people first" is a good guide: pick a strength that helps customers or teammates, such as reliability or staying calm, and back it up with an example. For a weakness, choose a real one and say what you're doing about it.
10. Have you worked in food service or with customers before?
McDonald's says restaurants hire "from Crew team members through Management", so experience isn't a must for Crew. If you haven't, say so and point to anything similar: babysitting, school jobs, sports teams, volunteering. Show you're ready to learn and to follow procedures exactly.
11. How would you motivate your crew during a rush? (Shift manager roles)
Describe setting clear positions, checking in during the shift, stepping in where help is needed and thanking people afterwards. A real example of leading a group under pressure carries the most weight.
12. Do you have any questions for us?
Ask about training, how shifts are scheduled, and whether the restaurant takes part in Archways to Opportunity.

How to prepare for a McDonald's interview
- Find out who runs the restaurant. Ask the restaurant whether it's company-owned or franchised, since that decides who sets the age rules, benefits and policies.
- Write down your exact availability before you apply with Olivia.
- Book the interview straight away if the restaurant offers it during the application.
- Take any personality test honestly, somewhere quiet, in one sitting.
- Prepare three or four STAR stories on customer service, teamwork, a busy moment and doing the right thing.
- Read McDonald's values on its mission and values page.
- Practise out loud in a mock interview with someone who will give you honest feedback.
Practising realistic work tasks
Interviews reward prepared stories. Assessments reward judgement, and that improves with practice on realistic tasks. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. It isn't affiliated with McDonald's and doesn't use McDonald's assessments or questions.
