Kohl's Interview Questions and Hiring Process

The short answer

Kohl’s interviews focus on customers, teamwork, ownership and why you want to work there. Kohl’s publishes four hiring steps (application, interview, offer, orientation) and four values to answer against: Customer First, Accountable, Resourceful and Empathetic. Store candidates commonly report a group or one-to-one interview, and at past seasonal hiring events Kohl’s offered jobs on the day of the interview.

  • Kohl’s recruiters advise treating the interview as a conversation you’ve planned stories for.
  • You apply online at careers.kohls.com and check your status in Kohl’s Workday portal.
  • Kohl’s doesn’t publish a timeline or an assessment for store roles.
  • Seasonal roles include retail sales associates in stores and material handlers in distribution.

Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations with a scored report on where you lost marks. Cohesyve isn’t affiliated with Kohl’s and doesn’t use Kohl’s questions.

Kohl's interview questions centre on how you treat customers, how you work with a team and why you want the job. Kohl's publishes a four-step process on its How we hire page: application, interview, offer and orientation. It doesn't publish how long it takes.

This guide separates what Kohl's publishes from what candidates report. Candidate accounts vary by store, role and year, so treat them as a rough guide.

What is the Kohl's hiring process?

You apply online for a role, interview, accept an offer and then attend orientation. Those four steps are the ones Kohl's lists on its careers site. Kohl's hires for stores, distribution and e-commerce fulfilment centres, and corporate offices, including its Milwaukee headquarters, its New York design office and its San Antonio office.

Applying

Search and apply at careers.kohls.com. Once you've applied, you can check your application status through Kohl's Workday portal, linked from the careers site.

For seasonal work, Kohl's seasonal page lists store jobs and distribution jobs, names Retail Sales Associate and Material Handler roles, and offers a Talent Network sign-up for seasonal job updates. During its 2023 holiday hiring, TMJ4 reported that you could also apply by texting APPLY to 24508. Check the careers site for the current options before relying on that.

What is the Kohl's interview process like?

Kohl's says the interview is "time to get to know each other better", and that it wants to hear about your goals, your experience and what interests you in working at Kohl's. It doesn't publish a format or length.

Store candidates commonly report one of two formats:

  • A group interview, especially for seasonal sales roles, where several candidates are interviewed together and answer in turn.
  • A one-to-one interview with a store manager or supervisor.

At its 2023 national hiring events, TMJ4 reported, store candidates could have an immediate on-site interview, while distribution and e-fulfilment centres held virtual events.

If it's a group interview

Answer when it's your turn, keep answers short, and listen to the others. Building on someone else's point politely shows the teamwork Kohl's asks for. Talking over people works against you.

What Kohl's recruiters say

Kohl's publishes interview tips from three of its recruiters. In short:

  • Be confident. Treat the interview as a conversation about topics you've already planned stories for.
  • Show your enthusiasm and let your personality come through.
  • Connect the dots between your skills, experience and accomplishments and the role, and answer directly.

Does Kohl's have an assessment?

Kohl's doesn't publish an assessment for store, distribution or corporate roles. If you're asked to complete one, read the instructions carefully and answer as you actually work. Our guide to situational judgement tests explains how scenario-based tests work in general.

How long does the Kohl's hiring process take?

Kohl's doesn't publish a timeline. At its 2023 national hiring events, TMJ4 reported that store candidates could receive a job offer on the same day as their interview, and distribution and e-fulfilment candidates could receive one within a few days. Outside hiring events, candidates report a range of waits.

What happens after you get an offer from Kohl's?

Kohl's says its team will reach out to schedule your first day once you've accepted. It doesn't publish what orientation involves.

Kohl's interview questions and how to answer them

These are the questions candidates most often report, plus the ones that follow from Kohl's four values. For "tell me about a time" questions, use the STAR method: situation, task, action, result.

1. Why do you want to work at Kohl's?

Kohl's says it wants to hear what interests you in working there, so prepare a real answer. Mention something specific: what you like about shopping there, the brands it carries, the flexible schedules, or one of its values that matches how you work.

2. Tell me about yourself.

Keep it to about a minute and connect it to the role, as Kohl's recruiters advise. Lead with customer-facing experience, then one strength, then why you're applying now.

3. How would you deal with an angry customer?

Kohl's describes "Empathetic" as "We seek understanding." Show that you'd listen first, acknowledge how the customer feels, fix what you can within policy and involve a manager if needed.

4. You're helping one customer and another asks for help. What do you do?

Candidates report this one often. "Customer First" is Kohl's first value. Acknowledge the second customer straight away, tell them you'll be with them shortly or find a colleague, and finish helping the first customer.

5. Tell me about a time you made a mistake at work.

This tests "Accountable: We take ownership." Choose a real, modest mistake, say what you did to put it right, and what you changed afterwards.

6. Tell me about a time you had to learn something quickly.

Kohl's describes "Resourceful" as "We learn continuously." Pick an example of a new system, task or product you got up to speed on, and explain how.

7. How do you work as part of a team?

Kohl's says "We win together." Give an example where you helped a colleague, shared work during a rush or kept a team task on track.

8. How would you feel about offering customers the Kohl's Card?

Candidates report being asked about selling the store credit card. Say you're comfortable mentioning it when it helps the customer, and that you'd explain it clearly and accept a no politely. Kohl's doesn't publish any targets, so don't guess at them.

9. What does great customer service mean to you?

Kohl's seasonal page says "your enthusiasm and motivation" bring the customer experience to life. Describe service in concrete terms: greeting people, finding what they need, and making checkout easy.

10. What is your availability?

Be exact and honest, and match what you put on your application. For seasonal roles, say clearly whether you can work evenings, weekends and holiday shifts.

11. How do you stay accurate when you're working fast?

For material handler and distribution roles, where Kohl's says teams pick, pack and ship merchandise using conveyors and machinery. Talk about checking your work, following the process and safety rules, and asking when you're unsure.

12. Do you have any questions for us?

Always say yes. Ask about training for new associates, how schedules are set, or what the best people in the role do well.

How to prepare for a Kohl's interview

  1. Learn the four values: Customer First, Accountable, Resourceful and Empathetic. Have one short story for each.
  2. Plan your stories in advance, as Kohl's recruiters suggest, so the interview feels like a conversation.
  3. Prepare for a group format. Practise giving a clear answer in under a minute.
  4. Know your availability and make sure it matches your application.
  5. Visit a store so you can talk about it as a shopper.
  6. Rehearse out loud, ideally in a mock interview with someone who will give you honest feedback.
  7. Bring two or three questions about training, shifts and how associates progress.

Practising realistic work tasks

Interviews reward prepared stories. The job itself rewards judgement with customers, and that improves with practice on realistic tasks. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for roles such as customer service, with a scored report on where you lost marks. Cohesyve isn't affiliated with Kohl's and doesn't use Kohl's questions.
