JCPenney interview questions centre on customer service, teamwork and selling, the qualities its store postings ask for. JCPenney's careers site says the company was "founded on the Golden Rule", and its sales associate postings ask you to model its values of respect, integrity, teamwork, compassion, accountability and inclusivity.
Below is what JCPenney publishes about hiring, then 12 questions to prepare with how to answer each one for JCPenney. Where nothing is published, we say so.

What is the JCPenney hiring process?
You apply online for a specific role, the hiring store or team reviews your application, and you interview if you're selected. JCPenney's careers site doesn't describe the steps after you apply, the number of interviews or how long hiring takes. JCPenney has been part of Catalyst Brands since January 2025, and current postings mention an associate discount on Catalyst Brands merchandise.

How do you apply to JCPenney?
- Search jobs at jobs.jcp.com by keyword, location or career area.
- Click Apply on the posting. The postings we checked open JCPenney's online application.
- Create a candidate account, which the careers site links to, so you can come back to your applications.
- Ask for help if you need it. The careers site lists a phone number and email for applicants with a disability who need assistance or an accommodation.
JCPenney has run national hiring events in the past. In 2018, JCPenney announced a seasonal hiring event where management would hold in-person interviews and make "employment offers to qualified candidates on-the-spot", and JCPenney said "All skill levels are welcome." We found no recent announcement of the same event, so check with your local store.
What does JCPenney look for?
The sales associate posting we checked says "your number one job is to share your love of fashion and do whatever it takes to create an amazing shopping experience for our customers." It describes the person it wants as:
- "Engaging personality who provides great service."
- "Excited to meet new people."
- "Thoughtful with a desire to make others feel good about themselves and their individual style."
It also asks associates to meet sales goals, share product knowledge, help open and close the store, and work with flexible availability including evenings and weekends.
Other store postings list three core competencies:
| Competency | How JCPenney describes it |
|---|---|
| Results | Solve problems and make smart decisions that drive sales, profit or customer service; work efficiently; inspire strong performance |
| Ownership | Provide great customer service; build positive, inclusive and respectful relationships; take accountability for your actions and outcomes |
| Intensity | Proactively find ways to improve the customer experience; show the confidence and courage to do what's right; act with energy and urgency |
What is the JCPenney interview like?
JCPenney doesn't publish an interview format, length or number of rounds. When the store contacts you, ask who you'll meet, how long to allow and whether there's a second conversation.
Does JCPenney have an assessment?
JCPenney doesn't publish any pre-hire test for store roles, and the postings we checked don't mention one. If you're asked to complete one, the invitation should tell you what it involves. If it shows you work scenarios and asks what you'd do, our guide to situational judgement tests explains that format.
JCPenney interview questions and how to answer them
JCPenney doesn't publish a question list, and each store or team chooses its own. These are questions to prepare for, chosen to match JCPenney's values, its three competencies and what its postings ask for. Use the STAR structure (situation, task, action, result) for "tell me about a time" questions. Our STAR method guide shows how.
1. Why do you want to work at JCPenney?
Be specific. Mention something you like about the store as a shopper, then link it to the job: helping people find their style, working on a team, or learning retail. The Golden Rule on JCPenney's careers site is a natural reference if it genuinely matters to you.
2. Tell me about yourself.
Keep it short: school or work, one strength that fits retail, and why you enjoy meeting people. If this is your first job, sport, volunteering and family responsibilities all count.
3. Tell me about a time you gave a customer great service.
This is the heart of the sales associate role. Choose an example where you noticed what someone needed and went further than the minimum, then say what happened.
4. How would you help a customer find something that suits their style?
The posting asks you to show understanding of a customer's personal style. Describe asking a few questions, listening, suggesting two or three options and being honest about fit.
5. How would you handle an upset customer?
Walk through it in order: listen, stay calm, apologise, fix what you can and bring in a manager when you can't. Ownership includes building respectful relationships, so show you'd stay courteous throughout.
6. Tell me about a time you met or beat a goal.
JCPenney sales associates are asked to achieve and exceed sales goals, and Results is one of the competencies. Any measurable goal works: sales, school grades, fundraising or targets in a previous job.
7. How would you suggest a JCPenney Rewards sign-up or an extra item without being pushy?
A salon posting we checked asks staff to promote JCPenney Rewards, and the sales associate posting asks you to build brand loyalty. Say you'd make suggestions that help the customer, explain the benefit plainly and accept a no politely.
8. Tell me about a time you made a mistake at work.
Ownership means taking accountability for your actions and outcomes. Describe the mistake, how you told someone, how you fixed it and what you do differently now.
9. Describe a time you saw a way to improve something.
Intensity includes finding ways to improve the customer experience. A small example counts: reorganising a display, speeding up a queue or helping a new colleague.
10. Tell me about a time you worked as part of a team.
Teamwork is one of JCPenney's values, and the posting asks you to work "together with the team to make a great environment for our customers and each other." Describe what you contributed and how you helped someone else.
11. What is your availability?
Sales associate postings ask for flexible availability including evenings and weekends, and seasonal roles have a set end date. Give availability you can keep and say whether you're interested in staying after the season.
12. Can you handle physical tasks like restocking and floor sets?
The postings mention floor sets, restocking and lifting up to 50 lbs as needed. Be honest about what you can do, and give an example of keeping a space tidy and well stocked.

How to prepare for a JCPenney interview
- Read the posting for your store. Note the duties, the competencies and the availability it asks for.
- Learn the values and the three competencies, and have one example ready for Results, Ownership and Intensity.
- Visit the store if you can, and notice how the floor, fitting rooms and checkouts work.
- Prepare four or five STAR stories covering customer service, a goal, a mistake and teamwork. Practise them out loud, ideally in a mock interview.
- Know your availability before the interview and stick to it.
- Bring two or three questions about training, schedules and how associates move up.
Practising realistic work tasks
Interviews reward prepared stories. Some employers also use work-style tasks, and judgement in those improves with practice. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. It isn't affiliated with JCPenney and doesn't use JCPenney's questions.
