The Home Depot doesn't publish its interview questions. It does publish its online assessment in detail: 53 questions, 96 hours to finish, and four areas it measures. Those four areas, with Home Depot's eight values, are the best guide to what the interview will probe. Below is the process step by step, then the questions to prepare and how to answer each one for Home Depot.
Everything about the process comes from Home Depot's careers site, linked as we go. Where Home Depot doesn't say something, we say so.

What is the Home Depot hiring process?
For hourly store and distribution centre jobs, you apply online, complete the online assessment and, if selected, interview. Home Depot's online assessment page says selected applicants may be contacted by email and/or phone to interview.
Home Depot doesn't publish what happens between the interview and an offer, or how long the process takes. Salaried, corporate and support roles go through Workday, and Home Depot doesn't describe their steps separately.

What is the Home Depot application process?
From the careers home page:
- Apply only on Home Depot's sites. Home Depot says it accepts applications only on careers.homedepot.com, or careerdepot.homedepot.com for current associates.
- Beware of impostors. Home Depot warns about people posing as the company by text, email or messaging apps, especially if they ask you for money.
- You don't need to visit a store to apply or take the assessment.
- Check your status in one of two places. Hourly in-store and distribution centre roles (cashier, customer service or sales associate, freight, warehouse and similar) have their own status link. For salaried, corporate and support roles, log in to Workday, open "Menu", then "Jobs Hub", then "Overview" or "My Applications".
Home Depot's role pages say it welcomes every experience level, from entry level to people with prior careers, and that home improvement experience is welcome and it provides training and resources.
If you need an accommodation
Email myTHDHR@homedepot.com with the accommodation you need and the store location(s) you're applying to. Home Depot says replies can take up to two business days. That inbox is only for disability-related requests; Home Depot says emails chasing an application won't get a response.
What is the Home Depot online assessment?
It's a 53-question questionnaire that hourly in-store and distribution centre applicants take online. From Home Depot's assessment page:
| Detail | What Home Depot says |
|---|---|
| Questions | 53 |
| Time limit | Complete within 96 hours of starting. You can stop and restart as many times as you like in that window |
| Format | You indicate your level of agreement with statements. Entirely text-based, with no sound or video |
| Professional experience | Your work or school experience |
| Customer focus | How you would interact with customers and others in a retail environment |
| Responsibility | How dependable you are, and whether you complete tasks reliably and on time |
| Learning potential | Your willingness and ability to learn new things |
| Reuse | Your answers count for multiple in-store and distribution centre hourly roles, including Store and MET, so you don't retake it for each application |
Some questions ask how your most recent manager would describe you. If you haven't had one, Home Depot says to think of someone similar who assigns you work, such as a project lead or a teacher.
Home Depot recommends taking it somewhere free of distractions. The platform works on mobile, supports screen readers (Home Depot tests with JAWS and NVDA) and has contrast options. You can have a job coach, vocational rehabilitation coach or support person help you. If a disability could affect your result, you can ask for an alternative to the assessment by emailing myTHDHR@homedepot.com. Home Depot says accommodations aren't part of the selection decision and aren't disclosed to hiring managers unless otherwise apparent.
Home Depot doesn't publish how the assessment is scored, a pass mark or whether you can retake it. Retake waits you read elsewhere are unconfirmed.
Agreement-scale questionnaires like this measure work style and habits. Our guide to psychometric assessments explains how that format works. The useful advice is simple: answer honestly and consistently, read each statement fully, and think about how you actually behave at work.
What is the Home Depot interview process?
Home Depot doesn't publish its interview format, its length or who you'll meet. What it does say is that selected applicants may be contacted by email and/or phone to interview, and that you can ask for help with the interview at myTHDHR@homedepot.com.
It's reasonable to ask the person who contacts you how long to allow, whether the interview is in person, by phone or by video, and who you'll speak to.
Home Depot interview questions and how to answer them
Home Depot doesn't publish its questions. The questions below are the kind to prepare, each tied to something Home Depot publishes: the four areas its assessment measures, what its role pages describe, and its eight values from its culture page: taking care of our people, respect for all people, doing the right thing, building strong relationships, giving back, excellent customer service, creating shareholder value and entrepreneurial spirit.
For "tell me about a time" questions, use the STAR structure (situation, task, action, result) and finish with the result. Our STAR method guide walks through it.
1. Why do you want to work at Home Depot?
Home Depot's culture page says it wants customers to feel they can "take on any project". Connect your answer to that: a project you did, a trade you know, or the kind of customer you'd enjoy helping. Its point about growth also helps; see question 13.
2. Tell me about a time you gave a customer excellent service.
Excellent customer service is one of Home Depot's values, and customer focus is one of its assessment areas. Describe what the customer needed, what you did and how they left.
3. How would you approach a customer who looks lost in the aisle?
Home Depot says its customer service and sales associates actively seek out customers, and learn to "greet, qualify, recommend merchandise". Walk through that: greet them, ask what the project is, then suggest the right product or person.
4. A customer asks about a product you don't know. What do you do?
Home Depot says home improvement experience is welcome and that it provides training and resources for the role. Show you'd be honest, find the answer from a colleague or a resource, and follow up with the customer rather than guessing.
5. Tell me about a time you helped a teammate.
The first value on Home Depot's list is taking care of our people: "We take care of each other." Pick an example where you stepped in without being asked.
6. Tell me about a time you did the right thing when it was difficult.
Home Depot's doing the right thing value says it strives to do the right thing "no matter what". Choose a real example, such as owning a mistake or following a safety rule under time pressure.
7. Tell me about a time you earned someone's trust.
The building strong relationships value names trust and honesty as the foundation. A regular customer, a new manager or a teammate who relied on you all work.
8. Describe a time you worked with someone very different from you.
Home Depot's respect for all people value is "We treat people like we want to be treated." Show how you listened and kept the work moving.
9. Tell me about an idea you had to improve how something was done.
The entrepreneurial spirit value encourages associates to be innovative thinkers. Give the problem, your idea and what changed.
10. How do you make sure you're dependable?
Responsibility is one of the assessment's four areas: being dependable and completing tasks reliably and on time. Talk about turning up, finishing what you start and telling your manager early if something slips.
11. Tell me about a time you learned something new quickly.
Learning potential is another assessment area, and Home Depot's role pages stress on-the-job training. Describe what you learned, how and what it let you do.
12. How do you stay safe when the work is physical?
For freight and receiving roles, Home Depot says associates load and unload trucks and may operate forklifts, and cashiers and sales associates may lift some product. Say how you follow safety rules and ask for help with heavy loads.
13. Where would you like to grow at Home Depot?
Home Depot says 90% or more of its US store leaders started as hourly associates, and its role pages set out growth paths. Department supervisor, for example, is an hourly role that Home Depot says prepares you for a salaried one such as assistant store manager. Show you've looked at a path that interests you.
14. What is your availability?
Home Depot's role pages mention morning, afternoon and evening shifts. Be honest about when you can work, and keep it consistent with what you put in your application.

What happens after the Home Depot interview?
Home Depot's careers site doesn't describe the steps after an interview, and doesn't publish its background-check or drug-test rules. Use the status links above to track your application, and ask your interviewer what happens next and when you should expect to hear.
How to prepare for Home Depot's hiring process
- Read the role page for the job you want. Home Depot publishes FAQs for roles such as cashier, customer service and sales, and department supervisor.
- Set aside quiet time for the assessment. You have 96 hours, and you can pause and come back.
- Answer the assessment honestly. It asks about your experience and how you work, and there's no answer key to guess.
- Prepare five STAR stories: a customer you helped, a teammate you supported, a time you did the right thing, a time you learned fast and a time you were dependable.
- Learn the eight values so you can link your stories to them.
- Know your availability and keep it consistent.
- Practise out loud, ideally in a mock interview.
- Bring two or three questions about training, the department and the shifts.
Practising realistic work tasks
Interviews reward prepared stories. The job rewards judgement with customers and teammates, and both improve with practice on realistic tasks. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. Cohesyve isn't affiliated with The Home Depot and doesn't use its assessments or questions.
