H&M Interview Questions and Hiring Process (2026)

The short answer

H&M tells applicants to prepare answers to three questions: why should we hire you, why would you like to work for H&M, and how do you see your future with us. H&M also says to be ready to talk about your weaknesses, and its seven values are the best guide to what else to prepare. The process is: apply online with your CV and personal letter, hear back within about two weeks, then interview.

  • H&M emails a confirmation as soon as it receives your application.
  • Its recruiters reply by email or telephone, usually within about two weeks.
  • Some individual store job ads we read include an online assessment, and offer an alternative method on request.
  • On what to wear, H&M says to dress your personality: nobody expects a three-piece suit.

Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs free practice job simulations for job seekers. Cohesyve isn’t affiliated with H&M and doesn’t use H&M’s questions or interviews.

H&M names three interview questions to prepare for on its own careers site: "Why should we hire you?", "Why would you like to work for H&M?" and "How do you see your future with us?". Its tips before you apply also say to be ready to talk about your weaknesses and the areas you want to develop.

Everything below about the process comes from H&M's careers site and H&M Group's corporate site, linked as we go. Where H&M doesn't say something, we say so rather than guess. Beyond the three questions H&M names, the questions further down are ones to prepare for, built from H&M's values and its descriptions of store roles.

What is the H&M hiring process?

You research the role, apply online with a CV and personal letter, get an immediate email confirmation, and hear from a recruiter within about two weeks. If you're selected, you interview. H&M's tips page covers these steps and stops there.

H&M doesn't publish how many interviews there are, whether any are in a group, or how long the whole process takes. Some store job ads add an online assessment, covered below. If you're invited to interview, ask the recruiter who you'll meet and how long to allow.

How do you apply to H&M?

Search roles on career.hm.com and pick your country. H&M's advice on the application itself:

  • Do your research first. H&M points you to its own careers pages for information about working there.
  • Adapt your CV and personal letter to the position if needed.
  • Explain why you're applying and what you'd bring to the role.
  • Keep your personal letter short.

Other H&M Group brands, such as COS, Weekday, Monki, & Other Stories and ARKET, have their own career sites, listed on H&M Group's careers page.

How long does H&M take to get back to you?

About two weeks. H&M says it sends an email confirmation as soon as it receives your application and that you can expect to hear from it within approximately two weeks, by email or telephone. It doesn't publish how long the steps after that take.

Does H&M have an assessment?

Some store roles do, according to individual job ads. H&M store job ads we read for the US and India on 27 Oct 2026 (not linked, as ads close when roles are filled) say it uses an online assessment in some stores, with your responses scored against predefined criteria set by H&M Group. The ads say you can ask H&M's recruitment support team for an alternative way of being assessed, and that choosing one won't affect your application.

H&M doesn't publish what the assessment asks, how long it takes or what score it needs. Read the job ad for your store, since it says whether the assessment applies. Treat test details you read on prep sites as unconfirmed.

If the assessment gives you workplace scenarios and asks what you'd do, it's a situational judgement format. Our guide to situational judgement tests explains how that format works in general.

What happens in the H&M interview?

H&M doesn't publish its interview format. Its advice is to prepare well using its careers pages, prepare answers to its three named questions, and then relax, be yourself and be honest. It describes the interview as a chance to learn new things about yourself and about H&M.

On what to wear, H&M says to dress your personality and let fashion guide you, and that nobody expects a three-piece suit.

What does H&M look for?

H&M says its values have guided the company since 1947. They're listed on its culture page and on H&M Group's site:

H&M valueWhat H&M says it means
We are one teamAn inclusive, respectful workplace; collaborating across boundaries and sharing skills
We believe in peopleBringing out the best in everyone; trusting others to take ownership
We are entrepreneursA business mindset; curious, creative and adapting to customer needs
We make constant improvementSeeking feedback and acting on it; small improvements add up
We are cost consciousUsing resources responsibly and doing more with less
We are straightforward and open-mindedOpen, honest and humble; speaking up, then committing once a decision is made
We keep it simpleGoing straight to the point; not overcomplicating

For store roles, H&M's stores page says teamwork is key to sales results and a good working environment. It describes four roles:

Store roleWhat H&M says the job involves
Sales AdvisorMaking customers feel welcome, happy and inspired as part of a store team
Visual MerchandiserStyling and presenting garments, following trends, with a commercial mindset
Department ManagerSpending 80% of the time on the sales floor, supporting and developing the team
Store ManagerLeading and coaching people, with a sharp eye for business and the customer experience

What questions are asked in an H&M interview?

The three below come from H&M itself. The rest are ones to prepare for, based on H&M's values and its store role descriptions. Use the STAR method (situation, task, action, result) for any "tell me about a time" question.

1. Why should we hire you?

H&M names this question. Match two or three of your strengths to the role's description, such as making customers feel welcome for a Sales Advisor, and back each with a short example.

2. Why would you like to work for H&M?

Also named by H&M. Be specific: H&M Group's business idea is good design at affordable prices without compromising on reducing environmental impact. Link one part of that, or one of its values, to why you want the job.

3. How do you see your future with us?

H&M's third named question. Its stores page says a role can be a flexible way to earn, a chance to learn, or the start of a long career. Be honest about which fits you, and show interest in learning.

4. What are your weaknesses, and what do you want to improve?

H&M's own tips say everyone has weaknesses and not to be afraid to acknowledge yours. Name a real one, then say what you're doing about it. This also fits the value "we make constant improvement".

5. Tell me about a time you worked as part of a team.

"We are one team" is H&M's first value, and its stores page calls teamwork key. Describe your part in a team effort and how you helped others.

6. How would you make a customer feel welcome?

That's how H&M describes the Sales Advisor job. Talk about greeting people, noticing when someone needs help and leaving them to browse when they don't.

7. A customer can't find their size and is frustrated. What do you do?

Show you'd stay calm, check stock or alternatives, and keep the customer informed. H&M's entrepreneur value talks about adapting to customer needs.

8. Tell me about feedback you received and what you did with it.

H&M's values talk about seeking feedback to act, learn and adapt. Pick an example where feedback changed how you worked.

9. How would you style this outfit, or present this display?

If you're applying to be a Visual Merchandiser, prepare for a practical question like this. H&M says the role calls for styling skill, trend awareness and a commercial mindset. Explain your choices in terms of the customer and sales, not only taste.

10. Tell me about a time you disagreed with a decision.

H&M says its people speak up but commit once a decision is made. Show that you raised your view respectfully and then supported the outcome.

11. Give an example of doing more with less.

"We are cost conscious" is an H&M value. A time you saved time, materials or money, or reused something, works well.

12. For management roles: how do you develop your team?

H&M says Department Managers listen to their team's ideas and help them build their skills, and that Store Managers coach and inspire. Give an example of coaching someone and what changed.

13. Do you have any questions for us?

Ask about training, how the team works, or how people progress. Avoid asking anything already answered on the careers site, since H&M asks you to research it first.

How to prepare for the H&M interview

  1. Read H&M's careers site and values, as H&M itself asks.
  2. Write out your answers to its three named questions and practise them aloud.
  3. Prepare one honest weakness and what you're doing to improve it.
  4. Have four or five STAR stories about teamwork, customers, feedback and doing more with less.
  5. Visit a store if you can, so your answer to "Why H&M?" is specific.
  6. Choose an outfit that's yours. H&M says to dress your personality.
  7. Rehearse in a mock interview with someone who will give honest feedback.

Interviews reward prepared stories, and those get easier with practice on realistic tasks. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs free practice job simulations for your role. It isn't affiliated with H&M and doesn't use H&M's questions or interviews.
