The GSK online assessment is the GSK Digital Assessment: an online, interactive assessment of how your strengths, behaviours and skills fit the role. In most countries, early careers applicants take it straight after applying, with seven days to finish it. Candidates who pass go on to a half-day assessment centre, and successful candidates get an offer.
Everything below comes from GSK's own careers pages, linked as we go. Where GSK doesn't say something, we say so.
The GSK hiring process at a glance
This is GSK's early careers process, for graduate programmes, internships, placements and apprenticeships. Experienced hires are covered further down.
| Stage | What happens | What GSK says about timing |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Online application | Create a profile on GSK's careers portal, add your academic details and confirm you're eligible to work where the role is. A CV is optional, and so is a cover letter. | Application dates vary by country |
| 2. GSK Digital Assessment | An online, interactive assessment of your strengths, behaviours and skills. Used in most countries. | Seven days from the invitation email. Part of it is timed |
| Some roles | A video interview, a technical assessment or both. | Not published |
| 3. Assessment centre | The final stage, with GSK hiring managers: individual tasks, a group or paired exercise and an interview. | About half a day, virtual or at a GSK site |
| 4. Offer | GSK offers you a position and guides you through the next steps. | Most graduates start between June and September |
How do you apply to GSK?
Apply through the early careers application process on GSK's careers portal. You create a profile, add your academic details and confirm you're eligible for the role's location.
Check the requirements before you apply. GSK says applications that don't meet a role's basic qualifications may be declined automatically. A few more rules from its early careers FAQs:
- Apply to one country. GSK asks applicants to pick just one.
- Focus on your preferred career path. Depending on the country, you may only be able to apply for one a year.
- Graduate programme areas are business operations, engineering, manufacturing and supply, commercial, research and development, and manufacturing sciences and technology.
GSK's graduate programme page asks you to tailor your application to the programme, show why you want to join GSK, and show you understand GSK and the wider industry.

What is the GSK online assessment?
The GSK Digital Assessment is an online, interactive assessment that looks at how your strengths, behaviours and skills fit the role you applied for. GSK uses it in most countries as the step after the application.
What GSK says about it:
- You have seven days from the invitation email to complete it. If the invitation doesn't arrive, check your spam folder.
- Part of the assessment is timed. GSK says not to worry if you can't finish every question.
- No prior knowledge of GSK or healthcare is needed.
- Have a pen, paper and a calculator ready, check your internet connection, and find a quiet place without distractions.
- Read the instructions carefully and start promptly.
GSK doesn't publish who provides the assessment, what types of question it contains, how long it takes in total or what score you need. Treat specific claims about those on prep sites as unconfirmed.
Assessments that measure strengths and behaviours are a kind of psychometric test. Our guide to psychometric assessments explains how they work in general, and if you meet workplace scenarios that ask what you would do, our situational judgement test guide covers that format.
Can you retake the GSK online assessment?
No, not in the same application cycle. GSK says, "In order to be fair to all candidates, we do not offer retakes for the current application cycle." You can apply again the following year, and GSK says extenuating circumstances may be considered; contact ww.earlycareers@gsk.com about those.
Can you use AI in the GSK assessment?
Not to complete it. GSK says you can use generative AI to help structure your responses or application documents, but not to replace your own ideas, complete personality or ability assessments, or help you during live interviews or assessment centres. For all roles, GSK warns that misrepresenting yourself can lead to disqualification.
Does GSK have a video interview?
For some roles. GSK says some roles include a video interview, a technical assessment or both, alongside the Digital Assessment. It doesn't publish their format or length. If you're asked to record answers rather than talk to a person, our guide to one-way video interviews explains how they work.
What happens at the GSK assessment centre?
The assessment centre is the final stage. GSK says it lasts about half a day, is held virtually or at a GSK site, and includes immersive exercises with GSK hiring managers:
- individual tasks;
- a group or paired exercise;
- an interview;
- depending on the programme, a presentation or a practical or technical exercise.
Full details come with your invitation. GSK's advice is to be yourself, stay calm if one exercise goes badly, and use the day to ask questions and decide whether GSK suits you.
What happens after the GSK assessment centre?
If you're successful, GSK offers you a position and guides you through the next steps. GSK says the majority of its graduates join between June and September; exact start dates are in each job description.
GSK doesn't publish how long it takes to hear back. It says timing varies by programme and location, and asks candidates to complete each step promptly to avoid delays. You can check your status under "My Applications" on your candidate home page.
How does GSK hire for experienced roles?
GSK's How we hire FAQs describe a shorter outline for other roles:
| Step | What GSK says |
|---|---|
| Application | Apply separately for each role. GSK doesn't forward resumes between application processes. |
| Recruiter screening | Recruiters handle initial screenings and explain the company and role. |
| Interviews and assessments | GSK reviews applications, then conducts interviews and assessments. |
| Decision | The hiring manager makes the final employment decision. |
| Checks | In certain locations, GSK may run background checks. |
GSK doesn't publish the number of interview rounds or a timeline for experienced hires. During active recruitment, your recruiter contacts you with updates and feedback, and you can check your status in GSK's candidate portal.
What does GSK look for?
GSK lists the qualities it wants from early careers applicants in its FAQs: genuine interest, self-motivation, proactivity, strong communication and teamwork, a drive to improve patient outcomes, accountability and integrity. Its graduate programme page adds collaboration, innovative thinking, adaptability and decision-making.
GSK describes its culture as "being ambitious for patients, accountable for impact and doing the right thing", and its purpose as uniting "science, technology and talent to get ahead of disease together". Its How we hire page asks you to make sure GSK's ambitions line up with your own.
| What GSK names | What to show in your answers |
|---|---|
| Ambitious for patients | You care about the end result for the people the work serves |
| Accountable for impact | You own outcomes, including the ones that went wrong |
| Doing the right thing | You act with integrity when it's harder |
| Teamwork and communication | You work well with others and explain things plainly |
| Self-motivation and proactivity | You start things without being told |
| Adaptability and decision-making | You handle change and make calls with incomplete information |
How does GSK interview?
GSK's interview guidance is built around STAR (situation or task, actions, results), which it calls "the basis of all competency-based interviewing". The idea behind it, in GSK's words, is that "past behaviour predicts future behaviour". GSK says to keep STAR answers brief and vary your examples, though reusing one example for different competencies is fine. Our STAR method guide walks through the structure.
Common GSK interview questions and how to answer them
GSK doesn't publish its interview questions. The questions below are ones to prepare for, based on the qualities and culture GSK publishes.
1. Why GSK?
GSK asks you to check that its ambitions line up with your own. Link your answer to its purpose of getting ahead of disease, and to the part of the business you're applying to.
2. Why this career path or programme?
GSK asks early careers applicants to focus on their preferred path. Explain what draws you to that area specifically, and what you've done that points towards it.
3. Tell me about a time you put the end user first.
This maps to being ambitious for patients and to a drive to improve patient outcomes. If you haven't worked in healthcare, use a customer, a client or the users of something you built.
4. Tell me about a time you were accountable for a result.
GSK names accountability for impact. Show a goal you owned, what you did and the measurable result. If it went wrong, say what you did about it.
5. Tell me about a time you did the right thing when it was difficult.
This tests integrity. Describe a real dilemma, the pressure you were under and why you chose as you did.
6. Tell me about a successful team project.
Teamwork and collaboration are on both of GSK's lists. Be clear about your own part in the team's result, and how you handled a disagreement if there was one.
7. Tell me about something you started on your own initiative.
GSK names self-motivation and proactivity. Pick something nobody asked you to do, and explain why you started it and what came of it.
8. Tell me about a time you had to adapt to a change.
Adaptability is on GSK's graduate programme list. Describe the change, how quickly you adjusted and what you'd do differently.
9. Tell me about a decision you made without all the information.
This is decision-making. Explain what you knew, what you didn't, how you weighed the risk and how it turned out.
10. Tell me about a new idea you came up with.
GSK asks for innovative thinking. Show the idea, how you tested it and whether others adopted it.
11. Tell me about feedback that changed how you work.
GSK's How we hire page looks for candidates "committed to personal development". Show you acted on the feedback, not just that you heard it.
12. Explain something complex to someone outside your field.
GSK advises speaking succinctly and avoiding jargon. Practise explaining a project or a piece of science in two or three plain sentences.
13. What challenges do you think our industry faces?
GSK tells candidates to keep up with developments and challenges in the industry. Read a few recent news items on gsk.com and in the trade press, and have a view on one.
14. Do you have any questions for us?
GSK suggests preparing at least three or four. Ask about the team, how success is measured in the role, and for graduates, how the programme's training works.
Our list of behavioural interview questions gives you more to practise on.
How to prepare for the GSK online assessment and interviews
- Check you meet the basic qualifications before you apply, since GSK may decline applications that don't.
- Tailor your CV to the role. GSK asks for a simple, clear format with few acronyms, and a careful spelling and grammar check.
- Do the Digital Assessment early in the seven-day window, in one quiet sitting, with a pen, paper and calculator.
- Don't panic over timed sections. GSK says not to worry if you can't finish every question.
- Prepare a STAR story for each quality GSK names: accountability, integrity, teamwork, initiative, adaptability and a focus on patients.
- Research GSK on its website and social channels, and follow one or two industry developments.
- Do a mock interview with someone who'll push you for specifics.
- Ask for adjustments if you need them. GSK offers reasonable adjustments and says you don't have to disclose a disability or long-term health condition.
GSK also warns about recruitment scams: it never asks candidates to pay fees during recruitment.
Practising realistic work tasks
GSK's assessments look at how you'd handle the work, and that improves with practice on realistic tasks. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. It isn't affiliated with GSK and doesn't use GSK's assessments or interview questions.
