Centene interviews are mostly virtual and mostly behavioural. You'll usually have more than one interview, often starting with a phone screen with a Centene Talent Advisor, and most interviews take place on Zoom or Teams with cameras on.
The details below come from Centene's careers site and careers blog, linked as we go. Where Centene doesn't say something, we say so. Two of the questions below are Centene's own examples; the rest are questions to prepare for, built on its published values.

What is the Centene hiring process?
You apply online, usually have a phone screen with a Talent Advisor, and then interview with the hiring leader, typically over video. Centene's recruitment fraud page describes how genuine Centene recruiting works:
- Applications go through jobs.centene.com and Centene's application tracking system, Workday. Centene says this is the only way to apply.
- Emails come from a centene.com or careeralerts.centene.com address, never a Gmail, Yahoo or Outlook account. Centene warns that scammers use lookalike domains.
- Centene doesn't recruit over messaging apps such as WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger or Signal.
- Centene never asks for money, bank account numbers, your Social Security number or other private information during interviews, and never asks you to buy equipment or gift cards.
Centene's teams cover clinical and care management, customer care, claims operations, data and business analytics, technology, finance and actuarial, provider networking, quality, legal and compliance, and more, plus internships and graduate roles. If you need an accommodation at any stage, Centene's applicant resources page explains how to contact its Workplace Accommodations team.

What is the Centene interview process?
Centene says you'll typically have more than one interview, the first often a phone screen with a Talent Advisor. Its careers blog post on what to expect in a Centene interview covers the rest.
The Talent Advisor phone screen
Centene doesn't publish what the phone screen covers. Be ready to give a short summary of your background, why you're interested in the role and how you meet the posting's requirements.
Scheduling the hiring leader interview
If you're selected to interview with a hiring leader, a member of Centene's HR Services team emails you to gather your availability. Centene points out that this email comes from a different person than your Talent Advisor, so keep an eye on your inbox.
The virtual interview
Centene says the majority of its interviews happen on Zoom or Teams, with interviewers and candidates on camera. Its tips:
- Find a quiet space without a busy or distracting background.
- Test your camera and microphone beforehand.
- Keep your resume in front of you.
- Prepare examples for behavioural questions and structure them with STAR.
- Have 3 to 5 questions ready for the end. Centene stresses that the interview goes both ways.
Does Centene have an assessment?
Centene's careers pages we checked don't mention a pre-employment test, which roles might use one or what it would contain. Prep sites describe personality, cognitive and skills tests, but Centene hasn't published these, so treat those details as unconfirmed. If your invitation includes an assessment, follow its instructions and ask your Talent Advisor what it covers.
Common Centene interview questions and how to answer them
Centene's mission is to "transform the health of the communities we serve, one person at a time." Its values are Accountability, Courage, Curiosity, Trust and Service, and its behaviours include:
- "We do what's right, not what's easy"
- "We go above and beyond for our customers and each other"
- "We break down silos and bring each other to the table to find solutions"
- "We measure our success in the trust we build"
- "We celebrate winning together"
Centene's STAR method guide says interviewers look for evidence of problem-solving, communication, teamwork, leadership, adaptability and decision-making. The answers below draw on both.
1. Tell me about yourself.
Centene says interviews often open with this. Its advice is to cover why you're looking for a new position, why this role interests you, your past experience and why you'd be a good fit for the role and for Centene. Keep it to a couple of minutes.
2. Tell me about a time you had to manage competing priorities.
This is Centene's own sample question. Use STAR, keep the situation and task brief, and spend most of your answer on what you did and the result, as Centene's guide recommends.
3. Why Centene?
Centene focuses on government-sponsored healthcare: Medicaid, Medicare and the Health Insurance Marketplace. Connect your answer to its mission of transforming community health one person at a time, and to the team you're applying to.
4. Tell me about a time you made a mistake. What did you do?
This tests Accountability. Own the mistake plainly, explain how you fixed it and what you changed afterwards.
5. Tell me about a time you did the right thing when the easy option was available.
Centene's first behaviour is "We do what's right, not what's easy", which links to Courage. Pick a real example where you raised a concern, followed a rule under pressure or made an unpopular call.
6. Tell me about a time you had to learn something new to solve a problem.
This tests Curiosity and the adaptability Centene says it looks for. Explain what you didn't know, how you found out and what you achieved with it.
7. Tell me about a time you built trust with a customer, member or colleague.
Centene measures success "in the trust we build". Show how you were reliable, honest and followed through, and how the relationship changed.
8. Tell me about a time you went above and beyond for someone.
This is the Service value. In healthcare roles, an example of helping someone understand or access what they needed is especially relevant. Explain why it mattered to them.
9. Tell me about a time you worked across teams to solve a problem.
Centene wants people who "break down silos". Describe who you brought together, how you handled different priorities and what the shared result was.
10. Tell me about a time you used data or evidence to make a decision.
This tests decision-making and problem-solving, especially for analytics, finance, quality or operations roles. Explain what information you used, the decision you made and how you checked it worked.
11. Tell me about a time you explained something complex to someone without your background.
Communication is on Centene's list, and many of its roles involve members, providers or state partners. Show how you simplified the message and checked it was understood.
12. Tell me about a time you led without formal authority.
Leadership is also on Centene's list. Describe how you got people to act, what you did when someone disagreed, and how you shared the credit, which fits "We celebrate winning together".
13. What questions do you have for us?
Centene's careers blog suggests questions like these: what the team is missing that this role should fill, the biggest challenges in the position, common career paths from the role, and the interviewer's favourite part of working there. Skip anything you could easily find online.
How to prepare for a Centene interview
- Read the job description and pick out the skills it stresses most, as Centene's STAR guide suggests.
- Prepare five or six STAR stories that cover Centene's values and the skills its interviewers look for. Examples can come from work, school, volunteering, the military or leadership roles. Our list of behavioural interview questions gives you more to practise on, and our STAR method guide explains the structure.
- Don't memorise a script. Centene asks for clear, authentic stories.
- Set up for video: quiet room, plain background, camera and microphone tested.
- Watch for the HR Services scheduling email, which comes from someone other than your Talent Advisor.
- Prepare 3 to 5 questions for the end of the interview.
- Practise out loud, ideally in a mock interview on video, so the format feels familiar.
Practising realistic work tasks
Centene's interviews ask how you've handled real situations with customers, data and teams. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. It isn't affiliated with Centene and doesn't use Centene's assessments or questions.
