Gap Inc. doesn't publish the questions it asks at interview, so the best guide is what it says about how it works. Its careers site lists four values: Center on the Customer, Create with Curiosity, Collaborate with Candor and Champion Excellence. The questions further down are built from those values and the store roles Gap Inc. lists.
Gap Inc. also says less about its hiring process than many retailers. Everything below about the process comes from its own pages, linked as we go. Where Gap Inc. doesn't say something, we say so rather than guess.

What is the Gap hiring process?
You find a role on gapinc.com, apply online, and track your application in your profile. Gap Inc. hires for its four brands (Old Navy, Gap, Banana Republic and Athleta) through the same careers site, so the process starts in the same place whichever store you want to work in.
Gap Inc.'s careers pages stop at the application. A Gap Inc. press release adds one detail about the next step: in participating stores and at distribution centres, an AI assistant called Bridgette may answer your questions, schedule your interview and send reminders, and store managers lead the interviews and make the hiring decisions. Gap Inc. doesn't describe offers.

How do you apply for a job at Gap?
Search the careers site by brand, talent area and/or location, then use the filters on the left. Gap Inc.'s FAQ says:
- The online application takes 15 to 40 minutes. Set aside enough time to finish it in one go.
- You must be at least 16 to apply for a store job.
- Part-time jobs are available in stores, distribution centres and call centres.
- You need proof that you can legally work in the US. Non-US citizens can apply if they can provide it.
- Current employees apply internally. Gap Inc.'s login page says internal candidates apply through Workday.
Gap Inc.'s talent areas page lists these store and contact centre roles: Sales Associate, Stock Associate, Customer Relations Specialist, Assistant Store Manager, General Manager and District Manager. Distribution centre roles include Warehouse Team Member, Cherry Picker and Maintenance Technician.
If you need help with an application, the FAQ gives an email contact for each country.
How do you check your Gap application status?
Log in to your profile on the careers site and open the "My Jobpage" tab. Gap Inc. doesn't say how long it takes to hear back.
Does Gap have an assessment test?
Gap Inc. doesn't mention any assessment or online test on its careers pages or FAQ. If you're asked to complete one, the person who invited you can tell you what it involves. Treat claims about a specific Gap test on other sites as unconfirmed.
What is the Gap interview process like?
Gap Inc. says store managers lead interviews and make the hiring decisions. In participating stores and at distribution centres, its AI assistant Bridgette may answer your questions, schedule your interview and send reminders, according to a Gap Inc. press release.
Gap Inc. doesn't publish its interview format, how many interviews there are or how long they take. Whoever contacts you to arrange it can tell you what to expect; it's a reasonable thing to ask when the interview is arranged.
What you can prepare for is the content. For a sales associate role, prepare to talk about customers, teamwork and when you can work. For management roles, add examples of leading a team.
What happens after the Gap interview?
Gap Inc. doesn't describe the steps after an interview. Keep checking the "My Jobpage" tab, and have your work authorisation documents ready.
Be careful with messages that claim to be from Gap. Its FAQ says Gap Inc. does not ask job applicants for information about their bank accounts or credit history. Treat any request for those details as a scam.
What does Gap look for in candidates?
Gap Inc. doesn't publish a list of qualities for store roles. Its four values are the clearest signal of what it wants:
| Value | What Gap Inc. says | What to show |
|---|---|---|
| Center on the Customer | Decisions start with the customer | You notice what customers need and act on it |
| Create with Curiosity | Asking "what if?" and "why not?" to challenge the status quo | You ask questions and suggest improvements |
| Collaborate with Candor | Direct, candid views, and listening to find common ground | You speak up honestly and listen to others |
| Champion Excellence | Clear expectations, removing barriers, exceeding ambitious goals | You set high standards for your own work |
Gap interview questions to prepare for
Gap Inc. doesn't publish its interview questions. These are built from its values and the store roles it lists, with how to answer each for Gap.
1. Tell me about yourself.
Keep it short: what you're doing now, any customer or team experience, and why this role. Finish with why you've applied to this brand.
2. Why do you want to work at Gap (or Old Navy, Banana Republic or Athleta)?
Be specific to the brand you've applied to. Mention something you like about its stores, its clothes or how it treats customers. Gap Inc.'s own careers pages say careers that start in its stores often become long journeys, so it's fine to say you want to grow there.
3. What does good customer service mean to you?
This is Center on the Customer. Give a short definition, then a real example of helping someone find what they needed.
4. Tell me about a time you helped a customer who was unhappy.
Show that you listened first, stayed calm, and solved the problem or found someone who could. Finish with how the customer left.
5. How would you approach a customer who is browsing on their own?
This is Center on the Customer. For a sales associate role, show that you'd greet them, read whether they want help, and offer it without pressure.
6. Tell me about a time you suggested a better way of doing something.
This is Create with Curiosity. Pick an idea you actually raised, explain why, and what happened.
7. Tell me about a time you gave a colleague honest feedback, or received it.
This is Collaborate with Candor. Show that you were direct and respectful, and that you listened when it was your turn.
8. Describe a time you worked with a team during a busy period.
Show how you shared the work, stayed calm and kept customers looked after. Gap Inc. describes Champion Excellence as setting clear expectations and removing barriers, so mention how the team agreed who did what and how you cleared anything slowing it down.
9. Tell me about a time you went beyond what was expected.
This is Champion Excellence. Choose an example where you set your own high standard, and explain the result.
10. How do you keep a shop floor or stockroom organised?
For sales and stock associate roles, talk about folding and replenishing as you go, keeping sizes in order, and working through tasks while still helping customers. Tie it to Champion Excellence: a high standard for your own work, and clearing problems before they slow the team down.
11. Tell me about a time you led others. (Management roles)
For assistant store manager and above, give an example of setting clear expectations, removing an obstacle for your team and hitting a goal. That mirrors how Gap Inc. describes Champion Excellence.
12. What questions do you have for us?
Ask about training, how the team works on busy days, and how people move into other roles or brands.
Answer the "tell me about a time" questions with a clear structure. Our STAR method guide shows how, and our list of behavioural interview questions gives you more to practise on.
How to prepare for a Gap interview
- Visit the store of the brand you applied to. Notice how staff greet customers and how the floor is laid out.
- Learn the four values and prepare one real example for each.
- Prepare two customer stories, one where things went well and one where a customer was unhappy.
- Know your availability before you walk in, and make sure it matches your application.
- Practise out loud, ideally in a mock interview with someone who will give honest feedback.
- Bring two or three questions about training, the team and growth.
Practising realistic work tasks
Retail interviews reward clear customer and teamwork examples. Practising realistic tasks makes them easier to find. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs free practice job simulations for your role. It isn't affiliated with Gap Inc. and doesn't use Gap's questions or interviews.
