What is the Five Below hiring process?

You find a posting on Five Below's careers site, apply online, and hear back from the store or team if they want to take your application further. Five Below doesn't publish its steps after the application, so ask whoever contacts you what comes next.

How to apply

  • Search by role and location on careers.fivebelow.com. Jobs sit in three areas: stores, distribution centres (Five Below calls them ship centers) and the corporate office.
  • Store jobs are listed under Store Operations. Titles there include Seasonal Sales Associate, Customer Experience Manager, Merchandise Manager and Store Manager.
  • Job alerts: you can sign up for daily, weekly or monthly alerts by category and location.
  • Accommodations: if you need a reasonable accommodation because of a disability at any stage, Five Below's postings ask you to submit a request through its crew services help centre.

Watch out for fake recruiters

Every Five Below posting carries a fraud warning. Five Below says its recruiters use an @fivebelow.com email address and that it never asks candidates for financial information or payments at any point in the hiring process. If you're unsure, find the same posting on Five Below's careers site before you reply.

What does Five Below look for in store associates?

Its Seasonal Sales Associate posting asks for "excellent people and sales skills", attention to detail in keeping merchandise organised, a well-stocked floor and smooth checkouts at the register. The requirements are:

  • At least 16 years old.
  • A flexible schedule: days, evenings and weekends, which may include overnight shifts.
  • Comfortable with technology, or willing to learn it: computers, cash registers, hand-held and mobile devices.
  • A good communicator who can handle customer concerns courteously and professionally.
  • Physically able to move merchandise up to 25 lbs, use ladders, and kneel, bend and stand for most of a shift.

Five Below describes its culture in terms of its purpose, "Let Go & Have Fun", and The Five Below Way, which it calls the values and behaviours every associate believes in. Its postings talk about making the workplace a "WOWplace". The posting doesn't ask for previous retail experience, and says associates learn procedures through on-the-job training.

What about manager roles?

Its Customer Experience Manager posting asks for a high school diploma or equivalent, at least two years of management experience, strong written and spoken communication, the ability to multi-task, creative thinking and composure under pressure. The role trains crew on Five Below's B.E.S.T. customer service experience, so every guest gets "a fast, friendly check out", and partners with the store manager to recruit, train, coach and supervise crew.

Does Five Below have an assessment?

Five Below doesn't mention an assessment or online test on its careers site or in the postings we checked. If one appears in your application, read the instructions carefully, do it somewhere quiet and answer as you actually work.

How long does the Five Below hiring process take?

Five Below doesn't publish a timeline. Seasonal Sales Associate roles are for the holiday season, October through January, so apply early in the autumn if you want seasonal work. If you haven't heard back, it's reasonable to ask at the store you applied to.

Common Five Below interview questions and how to answer them

Five Below doesn't publish its interview questions. These are the topics its store postings point to.

1. Why do you want to work at Five Below?

Connect your answer to what Five Below says it's about: its Stores page promises "fun, flexibility & bright energy", and its Sales Associate posting gives the purpose as "Let Go & Have Fun". Mention something you like about shopping there, and that you enjoy helping people find what they want.

2. What is your availability?

Postings ask for days, evenings and weekends, sometimes overnight. Give your real availability and stick to it. For seasonal roles, confirm you can work through the holiday period to January.

3. Tell me about a time you gave a customer great service.

Five Below wants associates who greet customers promptly and handle several at once. Use a STAR story (situation, task, action, result) that shows you noticed the customer quickly, worked out what they needed and followed through.

4. How would you help a customer who can't find what they're looking for?

The posting asks associates to share product knowledge, direct customers to merchandise and make recommendations. Say you'd walk them to it if you can, suggest related items, and check stock or ask a colleague if it isn't on the shelf.

5. A customer wants to return something. What do you do?

The posting asks associates to resolve concerns and, where possible, turn returns into exchanges. Show that you'd listen first, follow the store's policy and offer an alternative product, without pressuring the customer.

6. How would you tell customers about a promotion?

Five Below asks associates to share store events and promotions and to suggest products. Give a short, friendly example of mentioning a deal while ringing someone up.

7. The store is busy and the shelves need restocking. What do you prioritise?

Customers come first, but a well-stocked floor is part of the job. Say you'd help customers who need you, restock in the gaps and tell your manager early if stock or staffing needs attention, which the posting lists as a responsibility.

8. Are you comfortable using a cash register and hand-held devices?

The posting lists registers, computers, hand-held and mobile devices. If you've used them, say where. If not, say you learn new tools quickly and give an example.

9. Tell me about a time you worked as part of a team.

Postings ask associates to support team and store goals. Pick an example where you helped someone else out or covered a task so the team hit a deadline.

10. What does a fun workplace mean to you?

Five Below's purpose is "Let Go & Have Fun". Talk about energy and good humour with customers and colleagues, while getting the work done.

11. How would you train a new crew member? (manager roles)

Customer Experience Managers train crew on fast, friendly checkout. Describe showing, then watching, then giving feedback, and checking back later.

12. Do you have any questions for us?

Ask about training, how shifts are scheduled and what the busiest times look like.

How to prepare for a Five Below interview

  1. Read the posting for your role. Sales Associate and manager postings ask for different things.
  2. Write down your exact availability, including evenings, weekends and holiday dates.
  3. Visit a store and notice how it's laid out, what's on the end displays and how the checkout works.
  4. Prepare three or four STAR stories covering customer service, teamwork, a busy shift and learning something new. Our STAR method guide shows how, and our list of behavioural interview questions gives you more to practise on.
  5. Practise out loud in a mock interview with someone who will give honest feedback.
  6. Bring two or three questions about training and scheduling.
