Culver's interview questions centre on guest service, teamwork and dependability, because that is what Culver's restaurants say they hire for. There's no single Culver's interview, though. Culver's restaurants are run by owner-operators, and Nation's Restaurant News quotes CEO Julie Fussner saying "Our owner operators invest in their team members". The postings we checked are each published by an individual restaurant, so expect that restaurant to run your hiring.
Below is what Culver's leadership and its restaurants' own job postings say, then questions to prepare with how to answer each one for Culver's. Where nothing is published, we say so.
The Culver's hiring process at a glance
| Step | What happens | What's published about timing |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Find a restaurant | Look for a posting from the Culver's you want to work at. Postings are written by each restaurant. | Not published |
| 2. Application | Apply through that restaurant's posting. | Not published |
| 3. Interview | Run by the restaurant, in a format it chooses. | Not published |
| 4. Conditional offer | Some restaurants say a job-related background check may follow a conditional offer. | Not published |
| 5. Training | The postings we checked list paid training. | Not published |
What is the Culver's hiring process?
You apply to one restaurant, and that restaurant's team handles the rest. Culver's opened its first restaurant in Sauk City, Wisconsin, in 1984 and grew through franchising; Milwaukee's public radio station WUWM describes it as a chain of franchised restaurants. Culver's calls the people who run them owner-operators.
That's why accounts of the process differ online. Two Culver's in the same area can be run by different owners and hire in different ways.

How does the Culver's application process work?
You find the posting for the restaurant you want and apply through it. The postings we checked, for restaurants in Indiana and Wisconsin, each had an "Apply now" link and named the local restaurant, such as "Culver's of Granger". Three of them, all from the same operator, refer to S&L Companies' policy in their background-check notice.
What those postings ask for:
- "A genuine smile!", "Good communication skills" and "Dependability".
- No experience. They promise "World-class training, so no experience is needed!"
- Guest service and food. The duties are to provide guest service and hospitality, help prepare or serve food, and support a good dining experience. A South Bend posting adds cleaning and working in both front and back of house.
Read the posting for the restaurant you're applying to, because its wording and requirements are the ones that count.
What is the Culver's interview process like?
Culver's doesn't publish an interview format, length or number of rounds, and none of the postings we checked describe one. When the restaurant contacts you, ask who you'll meet, how long to allow and whether there's a second conversation.
What you can prepare for is the culture. Fussner told Nation's Restaurant News that Culver's culture "looks like family" and that its brand idea is "our love for food is as strong as our love for people". She said the priority is a consistent experience every time: "a great meal, but with great hospitality". Founder Craig Culver said in 2019 that it always comes down to people "who know how to say please and thank you and mean it".
Does Culver's have an assessment?
Culver's doesn't publish any pre-hire test for restaurant roles, and the postings we checked don't mention one. If a restaurant asks you to complete one, it should tell you what it involves. If it shows you work scenarios and asks what you'd do, our guide to situational judgement tests explains that format.
Culver's interview questions and how to answer them
Culver's doesn't publish a question list, and each restaurant chooses its own. These are questions to prepare for, chosen to match what Culver's says matters: its mission that every guest leaves happy, hospitality, teamwork and the dependability asked for in the postings we checked.
Use the STAR structure (situation, task, action, result) for "tell me about a time" questions. Our STAR method guide shows how.
1. Why do you want to work at Culver's?
Tie your answer to the guest. Culver's mission is that every guest who chooses Culver's leaves happy, so talk about enjoying making someone's day better, and mention something you've noticed as a guest at the restaurant you're applying to.
2. Tell me about yourself.
Keep it short: school or work, one thing you're good at, and why a team job with guests suits you. If this is your first job, school, sport, volunteering and family responsibilities all count.
3. What does great hospitality mean to you?
Be specific: a genuine smile, a warm greeting, getting the order right and checking that a guest has what they need. Fussner's phrase "a great meal, but with great hospitality" is a good frame for your answer.
4. Tell me about a time you made someone's day better.
This is the mission question in another form. Pick a real moment where you went out of your way for a customer, classmate or neighbour, and say how they reacted.
5. How would you handle a guest who is unhappy with their order?
Walk through it in order: listen without interrupting, apologise, put it right quickly and check they're happy before they leave. Say you'd involve a manager if you couldn't fix it yourself.
6. Tell me about a time you worked as part of a team.
Three of the postings we checked say "team members and teamwork are everything". Describe what you contributed, how you helped someone else and what the team achieved.
7. How do you make sure people can count on you?
Dependability is one of the three qualities listed in three of the postings we checked. Give evidence: turning up on time, covering a shift, finishing what you started, keeping a commitment when it was inconvenient.
8. How do you handle a busy rush?
Show that you stay calm, focus on the next task, keep food moving and stay friendly with guests while you work quickly.
9. Tell me about a time you learned something new quickly.
The postings promise training, so show you're easy to train: you listen, ask questions, practise and improve. Fussner also mentions a "pretty significant transformation in training", so mention that you like learning on the job.
10. Would you be comfortable working in the kitchen as well as at the counter?
The South Bend posting asks team members to work both front and back of house. Say yes if it's true, and mention anything relevant: food safety, cleaning, handling cash or working a till.
11. What is your availability?
Be honest and match what you put on your application. Ask which shifts the restaurant most needs covered.
12. Where do you see yourself in a year or two?
Culver's says most of its new owner-operators come from inside: Fussner told Nation's Restaurant News that "80%-90%" of its new owner-operators are "people who are already working in a Culver's", and owner-operators send leaders to Culver's Manager Workshops. If you're interested in leading a shift one day, say so.

What happens after the Culver's interview?
The restaurant tells you. Culver's doesn't publish how long a decision takes. Three of the postings we checked say that after a conditional offer of employment, you may need to complete a job-related background check. If you're hired, the postings we checked list paid training.
If you haven't heard back, contact the restaurant you applied to.
How to prepare for a Culver's interview
- Read the restaurant's posting and note its wording: qualities, duties and shifts.
- Visit the restaurant as a guest and watch how the team works, so your answers can refer to something real.
- Prepare five short STAR stories: making someone's day better, an unhappy customer, teamwork, a busy moment and a time you were dependable.
- Link each story to what Culver's asks for: hospitality, teamwork, a genuine smile and dependability.
- Practise saying them out loud. Our mock interview guide shows how to run one with a friend.
- Know your availability before you go in.
- Bring two or three questions about training, shifts and how the team works.
Practising realistic work tasks
Interviews reward prepared stories, and the job rewards calm judgement with guests and teammates. Both improve with practice on realistic tasks. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. Cohesyve isn't affiliated with Culver's and doesn't use Culver's questions or hiring materials.
