Cracker Barrel interviews usually come down to four things: how you look after guests, how you work with a team, how you cope when several things need doing at once, and why you want the job. You apply online at careers.crackerbarrel.com for a role at a specific store. Cracker Barrel doesn't publish its interview format or how long hiring takes.
Everything below comes from Cracker Barrel's own careers pages, linked as we go. Where Cracker Barrel doesn't say something, we say so rather than guess.

What is the Cracker Barrel hiring process?
You apply online for a role at a particular store, interview if the store picks your application, and start training if you're offered the job. Cracker Barrel doesn't describe the steps in more detail on its careers site.
Cracker Barrel is a restaurant with a retail store attached, so it hires across three store career areas:
| Career area | Roles Cracker Barrel lists |
|---|---|
| Guest Hospitality & Retail | Server, Host, To-Go Hospitality, Restaurant Shift Lead, Guest Services and Sales, Retail Sales, Retail Shift Lead |
| Culinary & Kitchen | Cook, Dishwasher, Night Maintenance, Busser |
| Restaurant & Retail Management | Associate Manager, Senior Associate Manager, General Manager, Retail Manager, and district, regional and vice-president roles above them |
Its job search also shows seasonal roles in the restaurant and the retail store. Corporate, distribution centre and hotel roles exist too, but this guide covers the stores.

How do you apply to Cracker Barrel?
Go to the Cracker Barrel job search and filter by keyword, team, role and location, or let the site use your location. Open a posting and choose "Apply Now", which takes you to Cracker Barrel's application system.
Read the posting before you apply. Cracker Barrel's server postings, for example, say what it looks for:
- someone who enjoys creating a great guest experience;
- a team-first mindset;
- someone who learns quickly and manages multiple tasks well;
- a positive attitude.
The same postings say restaurant experience isn't required: "No restaurant experience? No worries. We'll teach you everything you need to know."
If you need an accommodation during the application, Cracker Barrel's careers site lists 1-800-333-9566.
Does Cracker Barrel have an assessment?
Cracker Barrel doesn't publish one for store roles. If you're asked to complete a questionnaire with workplace scenarios, answer as you actually work. Our guide to situational judgement tests explains how scenario-based questions work in general.
What is the Cracker Barrel interview like?
Cracker Barrel doesn't publish an interview format, so expect it to vary by store and by role. Whoever invites you can tell you who you'll meet and how long to allow; it's a reasonable thing to ask.
What you can prepare for is what Cracker Barrel says it values. Its four brand values are "Pleasing people", "Real, good quality", "Craveworthy comforts" and "Taste of country, any time". Its careers site adds that "Pleasing people is a team sport", and describes the culture as "Good People. Good Work. Good Company." Expect questions that test those ideas: guest service, teamwork and doing the job well when the store is busy.
How long does the Cracker Barrel hiring process take?
Cracker Barrel doesn't publish a timeline. If you haven't heard back and want an update, a short, polite call to the store is reasonable.
What happens after you're hired at Cracker Barrel?
You start training. Cracker Barrel's careers page describes three routes:
- PAR programme for hourly team members, which teaches the skills for every position. Cracker Barrel's tagline for it is "Earn your gold stars and rise through the ranks!"
- Cracker Barrel University, online programmes for developing your skills.
- MIT programme for new and growing managers, plus a three-day business programme for top-performing managers on the way to District Manager.
Cracker Barrel says it likes "to promote from within", and that nearly all its General Managers and District Managers have been promoted internally.
What does Cracker Barrel look for?
Cracker Barrel was founded in 1969 by Dan Evins as a roadside old country store on Tennessee's interstate, built around comfort cooking and Southern hospitality. Its Who We Are page talks about "front-porch human connection" and about doing things consistently well.
Its careers site groups the job into four pillars: Focus on You, In It Together, Thrive Your Way and You Make The Moment. For store roles, that comes down to warmth with guests, a team-first attitude, learning fast and keeping standards up on a busy shift. Those are the ideas to weave into your answers.
Cracker Barrel interview questions and how to answer them
These are the questions that follow from what Cracker Barrel says it looks for, plus the standard questions most restaurant and retail interviews include. For "tell me about a time" questions, use the STAR method: situation, task, action, result.
1. Why do you want to work at Cracker Barrel?
Be specific. Talk about enjoying looking after people, the mix of restaurant and retail store, or the training and promotion routes Cracker Barrel describes. Linking your answer to "Pleasing people" shows you've done your homework.
2. What is your availability?
Be exact and honest. Say clearly which days and shifts you can work, including weekends and holidays, and make sure it matches your application. Each store is a restaurant and a retail shop, so say if you're happy to work in either.
3. Tell me about a time you made a customer's day.
This is "Pleasing people" in practice. Pick a small, real example: you noticed what someone needed, did something about it without being asked, and they left happier.
4. What would you do if a guest was unhappy with their meal?
Show that you'd listen, apologise, offer to put it right straight away and bring in a manager when needed. Cracker Barrel's server postings talk about small touches that show guests they're appreciated; recovering a bad moment is one of them.
5. How do you handle several tasks at once?
Cracker Barrel's postings ask for someone who "manages multiple tasks well". Explain how you prioritise: greet new guests first, keep track of orders, and ask a teammate for help before anyone waits too long.
6. Tell me about a time you helped a teammate.
Cracker Barrel says "Pleasing people is a team sport" and asks for a team-first mindset. Choose an example where you stepped in to help someone finish, especially when you were busy yourself.
7. You don't have restaurant experience. Why should we hire you?
Cracker Barrel says it will teach you what you need to know, so the real question is whether you learn quickly. Give an example of picking up a new job, tool or routine fast, and say you're keen to start the PAR training.
8. A guest in the retail store is looking for a gift but isn't sure what. How would you help?
For retail sales roles. Cracker Barrel describes the job as helping guests pick out a gift. Ask who it's for and what they like, suggest two or three options, and leave them to choose without pressure.
9. How do you keep food quality consistent when the kitchen is busy?
For cooks. "Real, good quality" is one of Cracker Barrel's values, and it talks about doing things consistently well. Talk about following recipes and food safety rules, keeping your station organised and speaking up early when something runs low.
10. Tell me about a time you made a mistake at work. What did you do?
Choose a real, modest mistake, say how you fixed it and what you do differently now. Owning it plainly matters more than the mistake itself.
11. Where would you like to be in a few years?
Cracker Barrel says it promotes from within and runs training for hourly advancement. If you'd like to move up, say so, and mention a step such as shift lead or the management programme.
12. How would you develop a team of new hires?
For manager roles. Cracker Barrel's management career area says "Every shift is a chance to grow your team." Describe how you'd set expectations, coach on the floor and recognise good work.
For more practice, our behavioural interview questions and situational interview questions give you a wider bank to rehearse.
How to prepare for a Cracker Barrel interview
- Choose the right role for your experience and availability: guest hospitality, retail, kitchen or management.
- Read the posting and note what it says it looks for; build an answer around each point.
- Learn the four values, and have one story for "Pleasing people" and one for teamwork.
- Fix your availability before the interview and be ready to state it clearly.
- Visit a store if you can, and notice how the team greets guests in the restaurant and the shop.
- Prepare four or five STAR stories about guests, teamwork, busy shifts and learning something quickly, and rehearse them out loud, ideally in a mock interview.
- Bring two or three questions about training, scheduling and how team members progress.
Practising realistic work tasks
Interviews reward prepared stories. The job itself rewards judgement with guests on a busy shift, and that improves with practice on realistic tasks. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for roles such as customer service, with a scored report on where you lost marks. Cohesyve isn't affiliated with Cracker Barrel and doesn't use its questions.
