Costco's hiring process starts with an online application to a specific location. If the location picks you, you interview there, and some positions also ask you to demonstrate skills or pass a business-related test. Costco doesn't publish its interview questions, interview format or a timeline.
Everything below about Costco's process comes from Costco's own careers pages, linked as we go. Where Costco doesn't say something, we say so rather than guess. The interview questions further down are ones to prepare for, built from what Costco says it looks for and from its own job descriptions.

What is the Costco hiring process?
You apply online to the locations you want, the location contacts you if it wants to interview you, and you're hired if you're selected. Costco says it selects the best-qualified candidates on three things: transferable skills, prior experience and member service skills.
Most people join Costco in its warehouses (Costco's word for its stores). Costco says most candidates are hired for part-time, entry-level jobs such as front end assistant, food court, member service and merchandise stocking. Its careers site also lists jobs in distribution depots, member service centres, manufacturing, Costco Travel, IT, accounting and the Home and Regional Offices. Costco says it fills most merchandising and other corporate positions by recruiting from its own warehouses and businesses.

How does the Costco application process work?
You apply online at careers.costco.com, choosing the location or locations you want to work at. What Costco says about applying:
- Applications expire after 90 days. If you haven't heard from your chosen location within 90 days, Costco says to submit another application to stay visible.
- Locations hire all year, not only in seasonal periods.
- New warehouses take applications about 12 weeks before opening. If a location doesn't appear when you search by ZIP code, it isn't accepting applications yet.
- Job listings are examples. Costco says a listing doesn't mean a position is open right now.
- Plan to work busy hours, typically nights and weekends. Merchandise stocking happens in the early morning. The warehouse job description we checked asks for open availability, apart from religious or disability considerations.
If the online application gives you technical trouble, the Costco Careers FAQs list a Human Resources phone line to call.
Should you visit the Costco warehouse after applying?
Yes, if you can. Costco's own advice is that "each warehouse receives hundreds of applications", and that you can stand out by introducing yourself to a manager at the location you applied to. Keep it short: say your name, the position you applied for and your availability, and thank them for their time.
Does Costco have a test or assessment?
For some positions. Costco says you "may be required to demonstrate skills or pass a business-related test". It doesn't say which positions, what the test covers, how long it takes or at what point in the process it comes.
Treat any question counts or sample tests you see elsewhere as unconfirmed. If you're asked to take one, ask the location what it covers and how long to allow.
What is the Costco interview process like?
Costco doesn't publish its interview format, how long interviews last or how many rounds there are, and it isn't something we could confirm from reputable reporting. The location that contacts you can tell you who you'll meet and how long to allow, so ask when they call.
What you can prepare for is what Costco says it selects on: transferable skills, prior experience and member service. Costco calls its customers members, and its mission is "to continually provide our members with quality goods and services at the lowest possible prices". Expect your interviewer to care about how you treat members, how you work with a team and whether your availability fits the location's busy hours.
Veterans applying for part-time, entry-level warehouse jobs get an interview spot toward the front of the line. Costco asks you to apply online and then email the regional representative listed on its resources for applying page.
What happens after the Costco interview?
Costco doesn't describe the steps after an interview. What you can rely on:
- Don't wait for an email. Costco's careers FAQ says application updates aren't sent by email or messaging apps. Contact the warehouse you applied to; warehouse phone numbers are on costco.com.
- If you're hired, you'll need to provide proof of authorisation to work in the United States. Costco participates in E-Verify nationwide.
- If you don't hear back, your online application expires after 90 days. Costco says to apply again.
Costco also publishes a warning about fraudulent job offers on its careers site. Apply only through careers.costco.com.
Costco interview questions to prepare for
Costco doesn't publish its interview questions. These are the questions to prepare for, based on Costco's selection criteria, its Code of Ethics and the duties in its own job descriptions. For "tell me about a time" questions, structure your answer with the STAR method (situation, task, action, result).
1. Why do you want to work at Costco?
Give a specific reason. Costco's Code of Ethics puts "Take care of our members" and "Take care of our employees" second and third after obeying the law, and its careers site says it promotes from within. Connect one of those to your own situation, for example wanting a long-term job with room to move up.
2. What does good member service mean to you?
Costco lists member service skills as one of its three selection criteria. Talk about greeting people, answering questions accurately, helping without being asked and staying patient when it's busy. If you've worked in retail or food service, use a real example.
3. What is your availability?
Answer honestly and specifically. Costco says busy hours are typically nights and weekends, stocking happens early in the morning, and the front end job description we checked asks for open availability. Only offer shifts you can actually work.
4. Tell me about a time you helped a customer who was upset.
Use a STAR story. Show that you listened, stayed calm, fixed what you could and brought in a supervisor when the problem was beyond you. Finish with the result, ideally that the customer left satisfied.
5. Tell me about a time you worked as part of a team when it was busy.
Costco describes warehouse work as "challenging work and we accomplish it as a team". Pick an example where you helped a colleague, covered a task outside your role or kept things moving during a rush.
6. What skills from your past jobs or school would you bring here?
Costco says it selects on transferable skills, so this question gives you room even without retail experience. Pick two or three skills that match the job description, such as cash handling, speed and accuracy, lifting and stocking, or dealing with the public, and give one example of each.
7. What would you do if you saw a spill in an aisle?
Costco's front end job description says to clean spills and trip hazards immediately and to follow all safety and security procedures. Say you would make the area safe straight away, clean it or get help, and not walk past it because it isn't your department.
8. Tell me about a time you did the right thing when it was harder.
"Do the right thing" is the guiding principle on Costco's culture and values page. Choose an honest, low-drama example: owning up to a mistake, returning extra change, or following a rule when a shortcut was easier.
9. How do you stay accurate when you're working fast?
Costco describes its warehouses as a fast-paced environment. Explain a habit that keeps you accurate, such as double-checking counts, keeping your area tidy as you go or asking when you're unsure.
10. Where do you see yourself in a few years?
Costco says the vast majority of its warehouse managers started in hourly positions, and it runs a Supervisor in Training programme. Saying you'd like to learn the business and grow into more responsibility fits how Costco describes careers there.
11. Do you have any questions for us?
Have two ready. Good options: what training looks like in the department, how the schedule works (Costco says it posts weekly schedules at least three weeks in advance) and what the best people in this role do well.

How to prepare for a Costco interview
- Read the job description for the role you applied for and note its main duties.
- Know Costco's mission and Code of Ethics. Both are short, and they give you material for "Why Costco?".
- Prepare four or five STAR stories covering member service, teamwork, safety and learning quickly.
- Be clear about your availability, including nights, weekends and early mornings.
- Practise out loud, ideally in a mock interview with someone who will give you honest feedback.
- Bring two questions for the interviewer about the team, training and scheduling.
Practising realistic work tasks
Interviews reward prepared stories. Some Costco positions also ask you to demonstrate skills, and practical skills improve with practice on realistic tasks. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs free practice job simulations for job seekers. It isn't affiliated with Costco and doesn't use Costco's questions or tests.
