Carvana's interview questions centre on customer experience, teamwork and working through constant change, because that's what its job postings ask for. We couldn't find a step-by-step hiring process published by Carvana, so this guide uses what its own postings say.
We read Carvana's current postings across customer, operations, logistics and corporate roles. Where Carvana doesn't say something, we say so. The interview questions are ones to prepare for; Carvana hasn't published its own list.

What is the Carvana hiring process?
You apply online for a specific role, interview, and must pass a complete background check before you're hired. Four of the five postings we checked carried the same background-check line. Beyond that, the requirements depend on the job:
- Operations and logistics roles (inspection, reconditioning, auction driving) asked for applicants to be at least 18 with a valid driver's licence. Driving roles also want a clean driving record, and some positions are subject to an MVR check.
- The customer advocate role we checked asked for applicants to be at least 21 with a valid driver's licence, customer-facing experience, and a notary commission within the first 90 days.
- The customer care graduate role in Tempe asked for a bachelor's degree and comfort serving customers by phone, with regular weekend shifts.
- Some postings say the role isn't eligible for visa sponsorship. Check each one.
Carvana also hires for ADESA, the vehicle auction business it owns, through the same careers site.

What is the Carvana interview process?
We couldn't find a published Carvana interview process, and the postings we read don't describe rounds, format or length. Carvana hires for very different jobs, from vehicle inspection to compliance analysis, so when a recruiter contacts you, ask how many interviews to expect, who you'll meet, whether it's by phone, video or in person, and whether there's a practical task.
What Carvana does publish is what it wants from people:
- Customer experience first. "At Carvana, we sell cars but we aren't car salesmen," its postings say, and its promise is that it won't sell a car to a customer that it wouldn't sell to its own mom.
- Teamwork. An ADESA posting describes a "we" versus "I" culture: help others, and they will help you.
- Comfort with change. A corporate posting looks for people "excited to thrive in an environment of impactful change", and operations postings describe a fast-paced, ever-changing production environment.
- Ambition and evidence. "We take big swings, set ambitious goals, and challenge each other to make data- and process-driven decisions in everything we do."
Does Carvana have an assessment?
Carvana's postings we checked don't mention an online test, assessment or practical task, and we couldn't find one published elsewhere by Carvana. If you're asked to complete a task, ask your recruiter what it covers and how much time to allow.
Common Carvana interview questions and how to answer them
In 2021, Fortune reported Carvana's seven guiding principles, which included "we're all in this together", "there are no sidelines", "be brave", "zag forward" and "stay scrappy", alongside picturing your mom on the receiving end of a sale. Carvana's current postings echo the same ideas. Answer each question with a short STAR example (situation, task, action, result).
1. Why Carvana?
Show you understand what makes Carvana different: it sells cars online and says it isn't a company of car salesmen. Connect that to the role you want, whether that's delivering cars, reconditioning them or supporting customers.
2. Tell me about a time you gave a customer a great experience.
Carvana's customer advocate posting talks about creating "an amazing and memorable pick up experience". Describe what the customer needed, what you did and how you know it landed.
3. How would you handle a customer who is unhappy with their car or their delivery?
Think about Carvana's mom promise. Show that you'd listen, take the problem seriously, fix what you can and pass on what you can't to the right team, keeping the customer informed throughout.
4. Tell me about a time you did more than your job description asked.
Fortune's 2021 piece told the story of a customer advocate who arranged a surprise for a customer, unprompted. Give your own example of noticing something extra that would help and acting on it.
5. Tell me about a time you helped a teammate.
Carvana's "we" versus "I" culture and its "we're all in this together" principle point to this. Show how you stepped in, what it cost you and what the team gained.
6. Tell me about a time things changed quickly at work. How did you adapt?
Carvana's postings stress impactful change and an ever-changing environment. Describe the change, how you got up to speed and what you delivered anyway.
7. Tell me about an ambitious goal you set and how you went after it.
Carvana says it takes big swings and sets ambitious goals. Pick a goal that stretched you, explain your plan, and be honest about the result, including what you'd do differently.
8. Tell me about a decision you made using data.
For corporate and analyst roles, Carvana wants data- and process-driven decisions. Walk through the question, the data you used, what you concluded and how you checked it.
9. Tell me about a time accuracy really mattered.
Customer roles at Carvana involve paperwork, notes and verifying sensitive customer documents. Give an example where you caught an error or kept careful records, and why it mattered.
10. How do you keep up quality and safety in fast-paced physical work?
For inspection, reconditioning and driving roles, postings mention production pace, safety equipment and changing weather. Talk about how you stay careful when busy and follow safety rules.
11. What's your availability?
Some postings mention weekend shifts or overtime based on business needs. Be honest, and make sure your answer matches what you put on your application.
12. Where do you want to grow at Carvana?
Carvana describes a "Careers Not Jobs" approach and says 90% of its leaders were promoted from within. Name a realistic next step from the role you're applying for.
13. Do you have any questions for us?
Ask about training in the first few months, what a strong first year looks like, and how people move into other teams.
How to prepare for a Carvana interview
- Read the posting closely and check you meet the hard requirements: age, driver's licence, driving record and schedule.
- Ask your recruiter about the format so you know how many interviews to expect and whether there's a task.
- Prepare five or six STAR stories on customer experience, teamwork, change, going beyond your role, accuracy and a goal you chased. Our STAR method guide explains the structure, and our list of behavioural interview questions gives you more to practise on.
- Learn how Carvana works from the customer's side: buying online, delivery or pick-up, and selling a car to Carvana.
- Be ready for the background check, and for an MVR check if the role involves driving.
- Practise out loud, ideally in a mock interview with someone who will give honest feedback.
Practising realistic work tasks
