The UPS hiring process depends on the kind of job. For most hourly roles, you apply online, watch a short video about the job and receive an offer, with no interview: UPS's FAQ says plainly that the application process at UPS does not have an interview step. Drivers add a road test and a medical exam. Professional roles at UPS do include interviews.
Everything below comes from UPS's own careers site, plus one NPR report, linked as we go. Where UPS doesn't say something, we say so.

What is the hiring process at UPS?
You apply on jobs-ups.com to a specific position, shift and location, and the steps that follow depend on the role. UPS sets them out on its application and onboarding page. UPS's FAQ advises you to apply to "the position, shift and location that works best for your schedule", and you can set up job alerts if the job or location you want isn't listed.
UPS groups its jobs into two families:
- Hourly roles: warehouse workers (also called package handlers), package delivery drivers, seasonal support drivers, driver helpers, warehouse worker/cover drivers, and tractor-trailer and sleeper team drivers. UPS lists them on its hourly roles page.
- Professional roles: sales, marketing, IT, engineering, finance, human resources and other areas, plus technicians and part-time supervisors, listed on its professional roles page.
Apply only through UPS's own site. UPS warns about fake job offers and fee requests and says it does not charge an application fee or any other fee.

Does UPS interview for package handler jobs?
Usually not. UPS's FAQ says its application process has no interview step and that the final step for most jobs is choosing your first day. If a job does need an interview, UPS says it will contact you by phone, email or text.
NPR reported in December 2021 that UPS introduced a faster application in late August that year. NPR reported that UPS dropped the in-person interview for entry-level package handlers, while still collecting more information for jobs such as drivers. Matt Lavery, who oversaw online recruiting at UPS, told NPR: "If we kept more of a traditional process, I'm not sure where we would be."
How does the UPS warehouse worker application work?
You complete the application, watch a short video about the job and, if you're offered the role, schedule your first day. UPS's warehouse workers page then asks you to:
- Upload proof of identity and employment eligibility online before your first day.
- Bring original documents on day one: one document from List A, or one from List B and one from List C. UPS says copies won't be accepted.
- Check your welcome email for your official start date. You'll get email and text reminders, and you can reschedule through the link UPS sends you.
- Dress for the work. Shoes or boots need sturdy uppers made of leather or similar material, good support and non-slip soles. UPS lists sneakers, loafers and sandals as unacceptable.
UPS describes the work as very physical. Shift windows vary by location; UPS lists preload, sunrise, day, twilight and night shifts, starting as early as about 3am.
What is the UPS driver hiring process?
Driver applicants follow the same first step, then complete driving checks after the offer. For package delivery drivers, UPS lists:
- Complete the application and watch a short video.
- If you get an offer, schedule and complete a road test and a DOT (Department of Transportation) physical exam.
- Complete the UPS training materials sent to your email before your first day.
- Submit proof of identity and employment eligibility online.
- Memorise the 5 Seeing Habits and 10-Point Commentary, and attend Driver Training.
- Receive your uniform.
The requirements UPS lists for package delivery drivers: at least 21 years old, a valid driver's licence from your state of residence (no CDL needed), a pass on the DOT physical and the UPS driving test, and the ability to lift up to 70 pounds. Your driving record is reviewed as part of the background check. Training starts with an online pre-course you must pass, followed by a multi-day programme at a designated facility and coaching back at your centre.
Tractor-trailer drivers also take and pass a drug screen after the offer. Seasonal support drivers, who deliver from their own vehicle, must be at least 21 with a clean, valid licence.
Does UPS have an assessment?
For most hourly roles, UPS lists no test beyond the application and job video, plus the road test and DOT physical for drivers. For professional roles, UPS says a skills assessment is required "only for select technical roles". It doesn't publish what that assessment contains, how long it takes or how it's scored.
If a UPS assessment shows you workplace scenarios and asks what you would do, it's a situational judgement format, which our guide to situational judgement tests explains in general terms.
What is the hiring process for UPS professional roles?
Professional, administrative and technical roles follow a conventional path. UPS lists four steps: apply online (uploading a resume fills in some details for you), begin the interview process if selected, complete a skills assessment if the role requires one, then receive an offer and begin onboarding. You track these applications in UPS's Workday Candidate Portal, signing in with the email you applied with.
UPS doesn't publish how many interviews to expect, who conducts them or how long the process takes. Ask the recruiter when you're contacted.
What interview questions does UPS ask?
UPS doesn't publish an interview question list, and most hourly jobs have no interview. If you're interviewing for a professional, technician, supervisor or other role that has one, these are questions to prepare for, chosen to match what UPS says it values: its four shared values, Trust, Responsibility, Excellence and Integrity, and its strategy of Customer First, People Led and Innovation Driven.
Use the STAR structure (situation, task, action, result) for "tell me about a time" questions. Our STAR method guide shows how.
1. Why do you want to work at UPS?
Be specific about the role and the business. UPS's culture page says "a job with UPS is an opportunity of a lifetime", and its strategy puts the customer first. Link your answer to something concrete: the scale of its network, a team you'd join or a skill you want to build there.
2. Tell me about a time you followed a safety rule when it slowed you down.
UPS's warehouse page highlights "an emphasis on safety", and its driver training has you learn and demonstrate UPS safety methods. Show that you treat procedures as non-negotiable, even under time pressure, and explain why.
3. Tell me about a time you did the right thing when it was hard.
UPS defines Integrity as being "committed to doing what's right, even when it's hard." Pick a true example: owning a mistake, refusing a shortcut or raising a problem early.
4. Describe a time you worked with others to hit a deadline.
Trust, in UPS's words, is "thoughtful collaboration together leads to our shared success." Say what you contributed, how you supported someone else and what the result was.
5. How do you handle a customer who is unhappy with a delivery or service?
Customer First is one of UPS's strategy pillars. Walk through listening, checking the facts, fixing what you can and following up. For sales and customer roles, give a real example with an outcome.
6. Tell me about a time you went beyond what was expected.
UPS describes Excellence as "exceeding expectations through unmatched service." Choose a story where you did more than the task required, and say what difference it made.
7. How do you stay reliable on early, late or physical shifts?
UPS lists warehouse shifts that start around 3am and others that end around 3am. Explain how you plan transport, sleep and time so you arrive on time every shift, and give an example of a commitment you kept.
8. Tell me about a process you improved.
Innovation Driven is part of UPS's strategy. Describe a slow or error-prone task you noticed, the change you made and how you measured that it worked. For engineering and IT roles, go into the technical detail.
9. Describe a time you had to make a decision with incomplete information.
UPS's Responsibility value is about staying "future-focused in order to build a better tomorrow". Show how you weighed the risks, chose, and checked the result afterwards.
10. For supervisor roles: tell me about a time you coached someone who was struggling.
UPS lists part-time supervisors among its professional roles, and its strategy is People Led. Explain how you spotted the issue, what you said and how their work changed.
11. Tell me about a mistake you made and what you learned.
Every value UPS lists rewards honesty. Pick a real mistake, own it in one sentence and spend most of your answer on what you changed.
12. Where do you see yourself in a few years?
UPS's careers site has pages on growth and development, and its hourly and professional job families sit side by side. If you'd like to progress, from handler to driver or into supervision or a professional track, say so.
For a bigger bank of practice prompts, see our behavioural interview questions and situational interview questions.
How long does the UPS hiring process take?
UPS doesn't publish an end-to-end timeline. What it does say:
- Warehouse workers could receive an offer and schedule a first day in under 10 minutes.
- Driver helpers should be ready to start within 30 minutes of being contacted.
- Drivers have extra steps after the offer (road test, DOT physical and training), and UPS doesn't say how long these take.
- Professional roles depend on interviews and, for some technical jobs, an assessment. No timeline is published.
What's the difference between UPS seasonal and permanent jobs?
A permanent role is a year-round part-time or full-time hourly position. A seasonal role, in UPS's words, has "a set end date to your position", and UPS typically hires for October through December. Hours vary, and some shifts start early in the morning or run past midnight, so read the job description before you apply.
How do I check my UPS application status?
For hourly jobs, use the unique link UPS sent by email or text when you first applied; it lets you continue your application, upload documents and check your status. For professional, administrative and technical jobs, sign in to the Workday Candidate Portal with the email and password you applied with.
If you need a disability accommodation to complete the application or interview process, UPS asks you to email AEHELP@UPS.COM.
How to prepare for the UPS hiring process
- Choose your shift before you apply. UPS advises applying to the position, shift and location that best fits your schedule.
- Have your documents ready: proof of identity and work eligibility, and originals for your first day.
- For driver roles, check you're at least 21 with a valid licence, and expect a road test and a DOT physical.
- Buy the right footwear before day one: sturdy uppers and non-slip soles.
- Plan reliable transport for early or late shifts.
- For roles with interviews, prepare five STAR stories covering safety, integrity, teamwork, customers and a process you improved. Practise them out loud in a mock interview.
- Apply only on UPS's own site, and never pay a fee to apply.
If you're also applying to FedEx, our FedEx hiring process guide covers its steps.
Practising realistic work tasks
Most UPS hourly jobs skip the interview, so your first real test is the work itself. Professional roles reward judgement and clear examples. Both improve with practice on realistic tasks. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. Cohesyve isn't affiliated with UPS and doesn't use UPS's questions or hiring materials.
FAQs
Does UPS hire on the spot?
For many warehouse jobs, close to it. UPS says you could receive an offer and schedule your first day in under 10 minutes after completing the application and job video.
Is there an interview for UPS package handler jobs?
Usually not. UPS's FAQ says its application process has no interview step. If a job does require one, UPS contacts you by phone, email or text.
How old do you have to be to drive for UPS?
At least 21 for package delivery drivers and seasonal support drivers. UPS doesn't publish a minimum age for warehouse workers or driver helpers on the pages we checked, so check the job posting.
Does UPS drug test?
UPS lists a drug screen as a step for tractor-trailer drivers. Its pages for other hourly roles don't list one.
Do you need a CDL to be a UPS driver?
Not for package delivery drivers. UPS requires a valid driver's licence from your state of residence. Tractor-trailer and sleeper team roles require a CDL.
