CSX's hiring process starts with an online application, the only way it accepts one. If you're selected, CSX emails you about the next step, and the process includes interviews and pre-employment testing to assess job-related qualifications. Offers are contingent, and every external hire completes a background screening and a medical evaluation. CSX says requirements and timing vary by department.
Everything below comes from CSX's own careers pages and FAQ, linked as we go. Where CSX doesn't say something, we say so rather than guess. Most detail is about the freight conductor role, because that's the job CSX describes most fully.

What is the hiring process at CSX?
You apply online, a recruiter reviews your profile, you complete interviews and any pre-employment testing, and you receive a contingent offer if you're selected. After you accept, CSX runs a background screening and a medical evaluation before you start. CSX's hiring process page says the steps and timing vary by department, and each posting lists its own education, experience and licence requirements.

How do you apply to CSX?
CSX accepts applications through its website only. Its FAQ sets out the steps:
- Go to "Working at CSX" and choose "Search Job Openings and Apply".
- Click "Apply Now" on a posting.
- Enter your email address, accept the terms and create a profile. Returning candidates confirm a verification code instead.
- Complete any screening questions in full. CSX says you must, to be considered.
A few rules worth knowing:
- Open positions only. If nothing is posted in your area, CSX has no current openings there. Set up job alerts through the CSX Talent Community instead.
- Former employees use the personal email they left on file.
- Veterans can email CSX's military recruiter at militaryrecruiter@csx.com, though applications still go through the website.
- Accommodation: if you have a disability and need one, email AccommodationRequest@csx.com with your phone number.
How do you check your CSX application status?
Sign in to your profile from the job search page. CSX's FAQ explains each status:
| Status | What it means |
|---|---|
| To be Reviewed | You've applied and your profile is waiting for the recruiter |
| Under Review | The recruiter has reviewed it and you're awaiting next steps |
| Under Consideration | You're awaiting next steps from the recruiter |
| Hiring Manager Review | The hiring manager is reviewing your profile |
| Interview | An interview has been requested and you need to act |
| Offer Sent | The recruiter has emailed you a contingent offer and you need to act |
| Screening | You're in the post-offer process |
| Pipeline | You're active, but you can't start yet or the hiring need is on hold |
| Not Retained | You weren't selected |
Does CSX use HireVue?
Yes, for some interviews. CSX's FAQ lists a HireVue support line for video interviews, and says to contact your recruiter if you lose your connection or don't receive a link. CSX doesn't say which roles use HireVue or what the questions are.
If your invitation is for a recorded interview, our guides to one-way video interviews and HireVue interview questions explain how they work. Your recruiter's name and contact details are at the bottom of your "Your Application has been received" email and your interview scheduling email.
Does CSX have a pre-employment test?
Yes. CSX says its process includes "pre-employment testing to assess job-related qualifications", and its freight conductor overview says hires must pass all required assessments. CSX doesn't publish what the tests contain, how long they take or how they're scored. Treat specific claims you read elsewhere as unconfirmed.
What CSX does publish are the conductor's basic competencies, which tell you what the role needs:
- Verbal comprehension: understanding oral and written communication, both general and technical.
- Communication: giving clear instructions and directions.
- Reasoning: problem solving and troubleshooting.
Conductors also have to meet the Federal Railroad Administration's colour vision requirements, and, once hired, complete annual training and pass a safety operating rules examination.
What does a CSX freight conductor do, and what do you need?
A freight conductor supervises the train crew, coordinates switch engine crews, and places cars for loading, unloading and making up trains. CSX says most transportation jobs need no railroad experience, because CSX trains you, and union membership is required. The conductor overview lists:
| Requirement | Detail |
|---|---|
| Minimum qualifications | High school diploma or GED, 18 or older, valid driver's licence, one year of related experience |
| Preferred | Outdoor work, on-call work, varying shifts, heavy equipment |
| Physical | Medium to heavy work, walking long distances over uneven ground, riding on the outside of rail equipment |
| Schedule | On call 7 days a week, 24 hours a day; new hires work primarily nights, weekends and holidays; report within two hours' notice |
| Checks | Background screening, post-offer medical exam including a drug screen, random drug and alcohol testing under federal rules |
CSX also says all candidates' safety records are reviewed. The overview mentions a "hiring session" without describing it, so ask your recruiter what yours involves.
What happens after you accept a CSX offer?
Your status changes to "Screening" and the post-offer process starts. CSX says all external candidates must complete a background screening and a medical evaluation. The background check is run by First Advantage and the medical by CHS (Comprehensive Health Services). If you hold a Washington or New Hampshire driver's licence, you'll be asked to complete a motor vehicle record form for that state.
For updates, CSX asks you to email PostOffer@csx.com with your name, the job and its location. Once you're through, your status becomes "Offer Accepted" and CSX creates your employee record. CSX's onboarding FAQ also refers to hotel information and reporting instructions for "day one in Atlanta", and conductor training "may occur outside of your work location", so be ready to travel.
What does CSX look for?
CSX's guiding principles are the clearest guide to what it values. Its vision is "to be the best run railroad in North America".
| Principle | How CSX describes it |
|---|---|
| Improve customer service | Do what we say we are going to do; communicate proactively, including when we can't meet commitments |
| Control costs | Eliminate unnecessary steps that add complexity and costs |
| Optimise asset utilisation | Do more with less through faster transit and lower dwell |
| Operate safely | 100% compliance with safety and operating rules, 100% of the time |
| Value and develop employees | Act with integrity, make expectations clear, reward doing the right things, always strive to get better |
Safety comes through everywhere. CSX's culture page says "safety is a way of life at CSX", and its conductor overview calls the role safety sensitive.
CSX interview questions to prepare for
CSX doesn't publish its interview questions. These are the questions its job overviews and principles point to, with how to answer each one for CSX.
1. Why do you want to work for CSX?
Be specific. Talk about the role, the railroad's part in moving freight, and CSX's training for people new to rail. Show you've read the job overview for the role you applied to.
2. Tell me about a time you followed a safety rule when it slowed you down.
CSX's principle is 100% compliance with safety and operating rules, 100% of the time. Pick a real example, explain why you didn't cut the corner and what the result was.
3. Tell me about a time you saw something unsafe. What did you do?
Conductors must stay aware of their surroundings and suspicious activity. Show that you spoke up or stopped the work, and how you reported it.
4. Are you able to work on call, nights, weekends and holidays?
CSX says new hires work primarily nights, weekends and holidays and must report within two hours' notice. Answer honestly, and explain how you'd make it work, for example with transport and family arrangements.
5. How do you feel about working outdoors in all weather and spending time away from home?
The conductor overview describes outdoor work in all weather and extended periods away from home. Give an example of physical or outdoor work you've done and how you managed it.
6. Tell me about a time you had to follow detailed written instructions exactly.
Conductors read bulletins, work orders and switch lists. Describe a task where precision mattered, how you checked your work and what would have happened if you'd made a mistake.
7. Tell me about a time you gave or received instructions by radio or phone.
Conductors receive and pass on information by radio and telephone. Show how you keep messages short and clear, and confirm they've been understood.
8. Tell me about a time you worked closely with a crew or team under pressure.
Conductors coordinate train and switch crews. Pick an example where clear roles and communication kept the team safe and on schedule.
9. How do you handle a problem you've never seen before?
Reasoning, problem solving and troubleshooting are among the conductor's basic competencies. Walk through how you'd assess, check the rules, ask for help where needed and act.
10. Tell me about a time you couldn't keep a commitment. What did you do?
CSX's customer principle asks people to "proactively communicate at all times including when we cannot meet our commitments". Show you told the right people early and offered a fix.
11. How do you learn a large set of rules quickly?
New hires go through training and must pass a safety operating rules examination every year. Describe how you study, test yourself and keep knowledge current.
12. Tell me about a time you got feedback and changed how you worked.
This links to "always strive to get better". Choose specific feedback, what you changed and the result.
13. What questions do you have for us?
Ask about the training location and length, the territory and terminal you'd work from, and how seniority affects schedules.
Use the STAR method (situation, task, action, result) for the "tell me about a time" questions. Our STAR method guide and behavioural interview questions give you a framework and a wider bank.

- Plan for the post-offer stage: a medical evaluation, background screening and, for conductors, a drug screen and possible travel for training.
Practising realistic work tasks
Interviews reward prepared stories, and tests reward careful reading and reasoning. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs free practice job simulations for job seekers, with a scored report on where you lost marks. It isn't affiliated with CSX and doesn't use its questions or tests.
