TCS Interview Questions and Hiring Process (NQT)

The short answer

TCS hires freshers through the TCS National Qualifier Test (NQT): register on TCS NextStep and apply for the drive, sit the NQT at a TCS iON centre, then interview for a Prime, Digital or Ninja offer depending on your score. Prepare for technical questions on your projects and programming basics, and HR questions about why TCS, relocation and learning.

  • The NQT has a Foundation section (75 minutes) and an Advanced section (115 minutes); you need the Advanced section for a Digital or Prime offer.
  • Clicking “Apply For Drive” on NextStep is mandatory. Without it, TCS says you aren’t considered.
  • TCS says it never asks for money or a deposit at any stage of hiring.
  • TCS doesn’t publish a question list or a full timeline for the interviews.

Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations with a scored report on where you lost marks. Cohesyve isn’t affiliated with TCS and doesn’t use TCS’s tests or questions.

TCS interviews freshers after they sit the TCS National Qualifier Test (NQT). Your NQT result decides whether you're interviewed for a Prime, Digital or Ninja offer, and the interview then covers your technical basics, your projects and your fit for TCS.

The process details below come from TCS's careers pages and its TCS iON test pages, linked as we go. Where TCS doesn't say something, we say so. The interview questions are ones to prepare for; TCS doesn't publish its questions.

What is the TCS hiring process?

For freshers, it's the TCS NQT hiring drive: register, take the NQT, interview, and get an offer if you're selected. TCS's All India NQT hiring page for the batches of 2024, 2025 and 2026 sets out the rules. Registration for that drive is now closed, so check the TCS careers site for the next one.

Who can apply

The 2026 drive was open to graduates of the 2024, 2025 and 2026 batches with these rules:

  • Degrees: B.Tech, B.E, M.Tech, M.E, MCA or M.Sc/M.S from an AICTE- or UGC-recognised institution, studied full time.
  • Marks: at least 60% or equivalent CGPA in class 10, class 12, diploma (if any), graduation and post-graduation (if any).
  • Backlogs: none pending when you take part in the selection process.
  • Gaps: you must declare them, and the total academic gap can't exceed 24 months.
  • Age: 18 to 28.

Registering on TCS NextStep

New users register under the "IT" category. Existing users log in with their reference ID. Then click "Apply For Drive": TCS says this step is mandatory and you won't be considered without it. If the button doesn't appear, TCS suggests logging out and back in, and checking you didn't create your profile under "BPS" by mistake.

What is the TCS online assessment (NQT)?

The TCS online assessment is the National Qualifier Test, an integrated test with two sections, sat in person at a TCS iON centre. On the 2026 drive:

SectionWhat it coversTime
FoundationNumerical ability, verbal ability, reasoning ability75 minutes (25 each)
AdvancedAdvanced quantitative and reasoning ability25 minutes
AdvancedAdvanced coding90 minutes

TCS encourages everyone to attempt both sections. The Advanced section is mandatory if you want a Digital or Prime offer. Your performance decides which interview you're shortlisted for: Prime, Digital or Ninja.

TCS iON, the TCS business that runs the test, adds some rules on its NQT page:

  • The test is in English only and held only at TCS iON centres.
  • There's no negative marking.
  • There's no cut-off or pass mark; the score shows your current ability.
  • A score is valid for two years from the date results are published, there's no limit on attempts, and your best score counts.
  • A score doesn't guarantee a job. The hiring company makes the final selection.

TCS iON's paid IT version of the NQT also includes a 30-minute psychometric section on personality and motivation. If that's new to you, our guide to psychometric assessments explains how they work. TCS doesn't publish how many questions its hiring-drive NQT contains, so treat question counts on prep sites as unconfirmed.

What is the TCS interview process?

After the NQT, TCS emails interview schedules to shortlisted candidates, for a Prime, Digital or Ninja offer interview. TCS's current hiring page doesn't describe the rounds. The last time TCS set them out publicly, on its NQT page for the batch of 2020, it described a personal interview with three rounds: technical, managerial and HR. Plan for all three kinds of question, and ask the TCS contact on your schedule email what to expect.

The technical round

Prepare for questions on the programming language you list on your CV, the basics of your degree subjects and your final-year project. If you reached the Advanced section, be ready to explain how you approached the coding problems.

The managerial round

This round tests how you handle situations: a team disagreement, a deadline, a mistake. Answer with real examples using the STAR method.

The HR round

Expect questions on why you want to join TCS, relocation and shifts, and your documents. Answer the logistics honestly; saying yes to something you can't do causes problems at joining.

What happens after the TCS interview?

TCS doesn't publish how long results take. What it does say about offers:

  • Genuine offers come from @tcs.com addresses. TCS says it never sends offers from free email services such as Gmail or Yahoo Mail, and doesn't use agents to run interviews.
  • TCS never charges fees. Its recruitment fraud alert says it doesn't ask for any payment or security deposit at any stage.
  • IT offer letters carry a QR code for verification for campus and off-campus hires.
  • If something looks wrong, TCS asks you to report it to careers@tcs.com.

Common TCS interview questions and how to answer them

These are questions to prepare for in each round. TCS publishes five values: Integrity, Excellence, Leading Change, Respect for the Individual, and Learning and Sharing. Several answers below draw on them.

1. Tell me about yourself.

Keep it to about a minute: your degree, one project you're proud of, the skills you'd bring and why you applied to TCS. End on the role, so the interviewer has an easy next question.

2. Walk me through your final-year project.

Explain the problem, your part in it, the technology you used and what you'd do differently. Expect follow-up questions on any tool you name, so mention only what you can explain.

3. Which programming language are you most comfortable with, and why?

Pick the language you used in the NQT coding section or your project. Be ready for basics in it: data types, loops, functions and how you'd debug a simple error.

4. Explain a concept from your core subjects.

Revise the basics of object-oriented programming, databases and operating systems. Explain one idea simply, give an example, and say so if you don't know something rather than guessing.

5. How did you approach the coding problems in the NQT?

Describe how you read the problem, chose an approach and tested it. If you didn't finish one, say what you would have done next. That shows your reasoning, even if you don't remember the exact question.

6. Why do you want to join TCS?

Be specific: a TCS service line, a training programme or a client industry you'd like to work in. Link it to Learning and Sharing, for example how you've taught yourself a skill and shared it with classmates.

7. Tell me about a time you worked in a team and disagreed with someone.

Use STAR. Show that you listened, kept to facts and reached a decision together. This maps to Respect for the Individual.

8. Tell me about a mistake you made and what you did about it.

Choose a real, small mistake, own it and show what changed afterwards. Taking responsibility without blaming others is what TCS's value of Integrity asks for.

9. How do you learn a new technology quickly?

Give a recent example: what you learnt, how (documentation, a course, building something) and how long it took. A concrete example of picking up a new technology fits TCS's value of Leading Change.

10. Are you willing to relocate and work in shifts?

Answer honestly. If you have a constraint, say so and explain it. This is a logistics question, and a clear answer now saves trouble later.

11. Where do you see yourself in a few years?

Talk about the skills you want to build and the kind of work you'd like to lead, within TCS. Avoid naming a job title you'd need to leave to reach.

12. Do you have any questions for us?

Ask about the training you'd receive, the kind of projects freshers join, or how the team measures a good first year.

How to prepare for the TCS interview

  1. Check the eligibility rules for your batch on the TCS careers page before you register.
  2. Register under "IT" on NextStep and click "Apply For Drive". Screenshot the confirmation.
  3. Practise both NQT sections. Time yourself: 25 minutes each for numerical, verbal and reasoning, and 90 minutes for coding.
  4. Revise one programming language thoroughly and the basics of your core subjects.
  5. Rehearse your project explanation out loud in two minutes.
  6. Prepare four or five STAR stories on teamwork, a mistake, learning something fast and meeting a deadline. Our list of behavioural interview questions gives you more to practise on, and a mock interview helps you hear how you sound.
  7. Keep your documents ready and make sure what you say matches your application.
  8. Ignore anyone asking for money. TCS doesn't charge fees.

Practising realistic work tasks

The NQT and the technical round reward people who can solve problems under time pressure, and that improves with practice on realistic tasks. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. It isn't affiliated with TCS and doesn't use TCS's tests or questions.

FAQs

Is there negative marking in the TCS NQT?

At a centre. TCS's hiring drive and TCS iON both say the test is held in person at TCS iON centres.

Do I need the Advanced section of the NQT?

Only if you want a Digital or Prime offer, where TCS says it's mandatory. TCS encourages everyone to attempt both sections.

How long is a TCS NQT score valid?

TCS iON says two years from the date results are published, and your best score counts if you take it again.

Can I apply to TCS with a backlog?

Not on the 2026 NQT drive. TCS said no pending backlog was allowed at the time of the selection process.

Does TCS charge a fee for interviews or joining?

No. TCS says it doesn't ask for any payment or security deposit at any stage of recruitment. Report requests for money to careers@tcs.com.
