Sysco Hiring Process 2026: Steps, Timeline, Interview

The short answer

Sysco hires in three stages: an online application of 15 to 30 minutes, screenings and interviews (a recruiter call or a digital assessment, then an interview with a hiring manager or HR, plus a job-specific test for many driver and warehouse roles), and a contingent offer. Sysco says most hires take 2 to 6 weeks, and every new hire needs a background check and drug screen.

  • Sysco says to expect an update within 1 to 2 weeks of applying.
  • Drivers and warehouse candidates may take a job-specific assessment, done digitally, by phone or as a practical test.
  • Generative AI, recording devices and transcription tools are not allowed during Sysco’s assessments or interviews.
  • Sysco recommends answering interview questions with the STAR method.

Sysco's hiring process has three stages: you apply online, go through one or more screenings and interviews, and receive a contingent offer if you're selected. Sysco says the process takes 2 to 6 weeks for most roles, depending on the role, the location and the number of applicants.

Everything below about Sysco's process comes from Sysco's own careers pages, linked as we go. Where Sysco doesn't say something, we say so rather than guess. The interview questions further down are ones to prepare for, built from what Sysco says about its values and its roles.

What is the Sysco hiring process?

You apply online, complete whatever screenings the role needs, interview, and receive an offer that depends on passing pre-employment checks. Sysco's own summary on its hiring process page is an online application, then a phone or video interview, a job-specific assessment for many roles, and a contingent offer.

Sysco's careers site features roles in transportation (drivers), warehouse, sales, merchandising, maintenance and technology. Sysco describes its identity as defining "the future of foodservice and supply chain", and its drivers deliver to local restaurants, schools, hospitals and stores.

The application

  • Apply through the job posting on careers.sysco.com. Sysco says to set aside 15 to 30 minutes.
  • Update your resume and cover letter so they highlight the skills and experience relevant to the job.
  • You'll get a confirmation email once you submit. If you create or sign in to a Candidate Home account, you can see your application activity there.
  • Sysco never charges a fee. Its careers site says it doesn't charge a fee at any stage of recruitment, and to refuse and report any request for one.

What is the Sysco interview process like?

After applying, you may be invited to one or more screening steps. Sysco lists two kinds: a phone interview with a recruiter, or a digital assessment sent by email or text message, which may include video. If you pass the screening, you may be invited to an online or in-person interview with a hiring manager or an HR representative. Depending on the role, this can include a panel interview or a presentation.

Sysco doesn't publish how many interview rounds there are or how long each lasts. The recruiter who contacts you can tell you, so ask.

Sysco says that while interviews vary, you can expect "broad questions about yourself and your experience", and it recommends the STAR method (situation, task, action, result) for answering them. Our STAR method guide walks through it.

If your screening is a recorded video, our guide to one-way video interviews explains how the format usually works.

Can you use AI during a Sysco interview?

No. Sysco says the use of generative AI, recording devices or transcription tools during assessments or interviews is not permitted. It also says answers created or substantially assisted by another person or by AI may lead to disqualification. Sysco does say AI tools can help you prepare beforehand.

Does Sysco have an assessment?

For many roles, yes. Sysco says candidates for roles such as drivers and warehouse positions may complete a job-specific assessment, done digitally, by phone or as a practical test. Screening for other roles can also include a digital assessment sent by email or text.

Sysco doesn't publish what these assessments contain, how long they take or how they're scored. Treat question counts or sample tests you see elsewhere as unconfirmed, and ask your recruiter what to expect.

What the role pages do tell you about the work:

  • Drivers. Most delivery driver roles need a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Sysco says some locations offer training or support toward a CDL. Routes may involve early morning or evening deliveries, and Sysco says most routes return home every night. See the drivers page.
  • Warehouse. The work is picking, packing and loading orders, using forklifts and pallet jacks, sometimes in coolers and freezers. Sysco offers day, night and weekend shifts and trains new hires on equipment and safety before they work on the floor. See the warehouse page.

If a digital assessment shows you workplace scenarios and asks what you would do, it's a situational judgement format. Our guide to situational judgement tests explains how that format works in general.

How long does the Sysco hiring process take?

Sysco says most roles take 2 to 6 weeks from application to hire, depending on the role, the location and the number of applicants. You can expect an update within 1 to 2 weeks of applying. Sysco also says many candidates for high-demand roles, such as CDL drivers and warehouse selectors, report hearing back within the first two weeks.

What happens after you get a Sysco offer?

If you're selected, Sysco sends an offer letter, and you may need a Candidate Home account to complete the offer documents. The offer is contingent on:

  • a criminal background check;
  • a drug screen;
  • a completed Form I-9;
  • providing the required documents within three business days of your hire date.

Sysco says the background check and drug screen apply to all new hires, including corporate roles. After that, Sysco provides orientation and training for your role, apart from any certifications or licences the role requires you to hold already.

If you need an accommodation during recruiting, Sysco says you can request one during the process or contact your recruiter.

Sysco interview questions to prepare for

Sysco doesn't publish its interview questions. These are questions to prepare for, based on Sysco's five values (Rooted in Integrity, Committed to Inclusion, Drive Together, Define Excellence, Grow Responsibly), its purpose and the duties on its role pages. Use STAR for every "tell me about a time" question.

1. Tell me about yourself.

Sysco says to expect broad questions about you and your experience. Give a short summary: your current or last job, one or two strengths that fit this role, and why you applied. Keep it to a minute or so.

2. Why do you want to work at Sysco?

Sysco's purpose is "Connecting the world to share food and care for one another." Link your answer to something concrete: the role's day-to-day work, a career path Sysco describes, or the restaurants, schools and hospitals its drivers deliver to. Sysco's own advice is to read its purpose and history before you interview.

3. Tell me about a time you worked safely when it would have been quicker not to.

Sysco says it values safety, teamwork and innovation, and its Define Excellence value includes continuously working safely. For driver and warehouse roles especially, pick an example where you followed a procedure, flagged a hazard or stopped a job until it was safe.

4. Our shifts often start early. How does that fit your schedule?

Sysco says its drivers and warehouse team members often work early shifts, and its warehouse page lists day, night and weekend shifts. Answer honestly and specifically about the shifts you can work.

5. Tell me about a time you helped your team hit a goal.

Drive Together says Sysco celebrates shared goals "as one Sysco". Choose an example where you covered for a colleague, shared the load during a rush or helped a new starter.

6. Tell me about a time you made a mistake. What did you do?

Rooted in Integrity is the first of Sysco's values. Pick a real, low-stakes mistake, show that you owned it quickly, fixed it and changed something so it didn't happen again.

7. How do you stay accurate when you're working fast?

Warehouse work at Sysco is picking and packing orders in what it calls "active, fast-paced work". Drivers work to a route and delivery schedule. Describe a habit that keeps you accurate, such as checking an order before loading or confirming a delivery with the customer.

8. Tell me about a time you dealt with an unhappy customer.

Sysco's sales page says its sales colleagues are "the face of Sysco to our customers". Show that you listened, fixed what you could, and followed up.

9. How would you build a relationship with a new customer? (sales roles)

Sysco says its sales roles centre on nurturing relationships with customers and helping them grow their own businesses. Talk about learning the customer's business first, being reliable on follow-up, and recommending things that solve a real problem for them.

10. Tell me about a time you suggested a better way of doing something.

Define Excellence includes challenging the status quo and pursuing innovation. A small, practical improvement you made in a past job works well here, with the result.

11. Tell me about a time you worked with people whose background was different from yours.

Committed to Inclusion is one of Sysco's values, and its hiring page says it welcomes applicants from all backgrounds. Choose an example where you learned from a colleague or adjusted how you communicated so the team worked better.

12. Do you have any questions for us?

Sysco says "the best interviews are conversations" and asks you to come with your own questions. Good options: what training looks like for the role, how routes or shifts are assigned, and what the best people in the role do well.

For more practice material, see our list of behavioural interview questions.

How to prepare for Sysco's hiring process

  1. Read the job posting and note the main duties and any licence it needs, such as a Class A CDL for most driver roles.
  2. Update your resume and cover letter for the role before applying, as Sysco advises.
  3. Read Sysco's purpose and five values on its purpose page, so you can answer "Why Sysco?" with something specific.
  4. Prepare four or five STAR stories covering safety, teamwork, accuracy, customers and owning a mistake.
  5. Plan for the assessment. If your role has a job-specific or digital assessment, ask the recruiter what format it takes and set aside quiet time for it.
  6. Practise out loud, ideally in a mock interview with someone who will give honest feedback.
  7. Dress for the role. Sysco suggests business professional for corporate roles, and clean, work-appropriate clothes for fleet, warehouse and technician roles.

Practising realistic work tasks

Interviews reward prepared stories. Many Sysco roles also include a job-specific assessment, and practical judgement improves with practice on realistic tasks. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs free practice job simulations for job seekers. It isn't affiliated with Sysco and doesn't use Sysco's questions or assessments.
