Sutter Health doesn't publish its interview questions. Its job postings ask for safe patient care, clear communication with patients and families, teamwork with other providers, good prioritisation and protecting patients' privacy, so prepare examples of each. You apply online through jobs.sutterhealth.org. Sutter doesn't publish its interview format or how long hiring takes.
Everything below comes from Sutter Health's own careers pages and job postings, linked as we go. Where Sutter doesn't say something, we say so rather than guess.

What is the Sutter Health hiring process?
You find a role on Sutter's careers site, apply through its online application, interview with the hiring team if you're shortlisted, and go through orientation if you're hired. Sutter doesn't describe the steps in more detail on its careers site.

How do you apply to Sutter Health?
Search the open jobs by keyword or filter, open a posting, and choose "Apply", which takes you to Sutter's Workday application.
Read the whole posting first. Sutter's postings follow a fixed layout, and it tells you most of what the interview will cover. A Registered Nurse posting we checked listed:
- Organisation: the specific hospital or site the role is at;
- Position overview: the core duties;
- Education, certification and licensure: for that role, a California RN licence, BLS and ACLS;
- Typical experience;
- Skills and knowledge: a list of what the role needs;
- Job details: shift, schedule, shift length, days of the week, weekend requirements, and whether the role is unionised.
Check that the shift and weekend requirements work for you before you apply, so your answers about availability match.
Does Sutter Health have an assessment?
Sutter doesn't publish one. Its careers pages say nothing about pre-hire tests for any role. If you're asked to complete a questionnaire with workplace scenarios, answer as you actually work; our guide to situational judgement tests explains how scenario-based questions work in general.
What is the Sutter Health interview like?
Sutter doesn't publish an interview format, so expect it to vary by site, department and role. The person who invites you can tell you who you'll meet and how long to allow; it's a reasonable thing to ask.
What you can prepare for is the posting's skills list. The Registered Nurse posting we checked asked for:
- knowledge of nursing theory and practice, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology;
- written and verbal communication that explains sensitive information clearly to non-medical people;
- time management, including prioritising patient care within set policies;
- working independently and as part of a team "in an ever-changing environment";
- engaging patients, families and colleagues "in a variety of stressful situations";
- critical thinking to solve routine and complex problems;
- protecting each patient's protected health information (PHI);
- collaborative relationships with peers and other providers.
Sutter's careers site also describes its culture. It talks about "creating a culture where we can put our patients first by always caring for our people", and about "respect, empathy and trust among our teams and with those we serve". A section of its careers homepage is headed "Caring, Growing, and Belonging Never Stops". Expect questions that test whether you work that way.
How long does the Sutter Health hiring process take?
Sutter doesn't publish a timeline. If you've met a hiring team at one of Sutter's career events, they're a reasonable place to follow up.
What happens after you're hired at Sutter Health?
Sutter's onboarding detail is published mainly for nurses. Its Nurse Residency Program FAQ says:
- new-graduate nurses start with New Employee Orientation, then work on their unit with one or two preceptors;
- the program lasts 6 to 7 months across six tracks: general (acute and ambulatory), critical care, emergency, labour and delivery, post-partum and operating room;
- nurses with under a year of experience are enrolled automatically, with "no separate application";
- you can apply before passing the NCLEX, but you need a California RN licence and BLS by your start date.
For all employees, Sutter lists career development options including mentoring, leadership programmes, internal moves between teams and LinkedIn Learning.
Common Sutter Health interview questions and how to answer them
Sutter doesn't publish its interview questions. These are common healthcare interview questions, with answers shaped by what Sutter's postings and careers pages say it looks for. Use the STAR method for any "tell me about a time" question.
1. Why do you want to work at Sutter Health?
Be specific to the site you applied to and to Sutter. Its careers site talks about putting patients first by caring for its people, and about learning and growing. Mention the department, the community it serves or a development programme that matters to you.
2. Tell me about a time you explained something sensitive to a patient or family.
Sutter's postings ask for communication that explains sensitive information clearly to non-medical people. Show how you checked understanding, used plain words and stayed kind.
3. Describe a time you had several urgent priorities at once. How did you decide what came first?
Prioritising patient care is on the posting's skills list. Walk through how you assessed urgency, what you delegated or escalated, and how you kept to policy.
4. Tell me about a stressful situation with a patient or family member and how you handled it.
The posting asks you to engage patients and families "in a variety of stressful situations". Show you stayed calm, listened and involved the right people.
5. How do you work with physicians and other providers when you disagree?
Sutter asks for collaborative relationships with peers and other providers. Describe raising a concern respectfully, using facts and putting the patient's safety first.
6. Give an example of how you protect patient privacy.
Protecting PHI is a named requirement. Talk about specific habits: logging off, not discussing patients in public areas, checking identity before sharing information.
7. Tell me about a complex problem you solved using critical thinking.
The posting asks for critical thinking within existing procedures. Pick a case where you noticed something was wrong, worked out why and fixed it or escalated it.
8. How do you keep up with changes in policy, regulation or best practice?
Sutter's postings expect working knowledge of changing regulations and best practice. Mention how you learn: training, colleagues, professional bodies.
9. Tell me about a time you made someone feel respected and included.
Sutter's careers site highlights respect, empathy and trust, and its inclusion and belonging work. Give an example with a patient or colleague whose needs or background differed from yours.
10. How do you handle feedback from a preceptor or manager?
New nurses at Sutter learn with preceptors, and Sutter describes "always listening, learning and growing". Show you ask for feedback and act on it.
11. Can you work the schedule this role requires?
Postings state the shift, shift length and weekend requirements. Answer honestly and specifically.
12. What questions do you have for us?
Ask about the unit or team, how orientation works for your role and what strong performers do well in their first year.
For more practice, our list of behavioural interview questions gives you a wider bank.
How to prepare for a Sutter Health interview
- Print the posting and turn each line of its skills list into an example you can talk about.
- Check your licences and certifications against the posting, and have the details ready.
- Confirm the shift and weekend requirements work for you.
- Learn about the site, not only Sutter as a whole, since each posting names a specific hospital or site.
- Prepare five or six STAR stories covering patient communication, prioritisation, teamwork, privacy, a stressful situation and learning from feedback.
- Practise out loud, ideally in a mock interview with someone who will give honest feedback.
- Bring two or three questions about orientation, the team and the schedule.
Practising realistic work tasks
Interviews reward prepared stories, and patient-facing work rewards judgement under pressure. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role with a scored report on where you lost marks. It isn't affiliated with Sutter Health and doesn't use its questions.
