Subway Interview Questions and Hiring Process 2026

The short answer

Subway restaurants are owned and operated by independent franchisees, so a restaurant job is with that owner’s business, and Subway doesn’t publish how franchisees hire. Corporate and field roles go through careers.subway.com. Subway doesn’t publish interview questions, so prepare examples of serving guests, working fast without losing quality, and being reliable.

  • Subway says it has more than 35,000 restaurants, independently owned and operated by thousands of franchisees.
  • The jobs on careers.subway.com are corporate and field roles; restaurant jobs weren’t listed when we checked.
  • Corporate applications start with a short form: your legal name, email and phone number.
  • Subway doesn’t publish an interview format, assessment or hiring timeline.

Subway restaurants are owned and operated by Subway franchisees, and Subway asks guests to "think of your neighborhood Subway restaurant as a small business". That shapes how you get hired. The questions below are built around what Subway says about its restaurants and its corporate teams, and each comes with how to answer it for Subway specifically.

Subway doesn't publish its interview questions, interview format or a hiring timeline. Everything about the process here comes from Subway's own pages, linked as we go. Where Subway doesn't say something, we say so.

What is the Subway hiring process?

It depends on whether the job is in a restaurant or at Subway itself. Subway says its more than 35,000 restaurants are independently owned and operated by thousands of franchisees. Each franchisee runs its restaurants as its own business; Subway says franchisees set their own prices and decide which promotions to run.

Subway's own careers site, careers.subway.com, lists corporate and field jobs, such as technology, product, franchise performance and development roles. When we checked, it didn't list restaurant crew jobs.

How do you apply for a job at a Subway restaurant?

Subway doesn't publish a process for restaurant jobs. Its restaurants are owned and operated by franchisees, so a restaurant job is with that owner's business. The practical route is to ask at the restaurant you want to work at, or look for that owner's own job adverts.

Don't assume one restaurant's process matches another's. Ask whoever you speak to what the steps are and when you'll hear back.

How do you apply for a Subway corporate job?

Search roles on careers.subway.com by keyword, category or location. If nothing fits, the Talent Network sends job alerts for up to 10 combinations of interest area and location.

Each listing's "Apply For This Role" button opens Subway's application, which starts with your legal first and last name, email address and phone number. By giving your number you agree to calls or texts about your application. Marketing messages about future jobs are a separate, optional opt-in, and Subway says you don't need to accept them to be considered. Listings say Subway only considers applicants already authorised to work in the country where the job is based.

Does Subway have an assessment?

Subway doesn't publish one for restaurant or corporate roles. If a franchisee or recruiter asks you to complete a questionnaire or test, ask what it covers and how long to allow. If it gives you work scenarios and asks what you'd do, it's a situational judgement format; our guide to situational judgement tests explains how those work.

What is the Subway interview process?

Subway doesn't publish an interview format for either path. For restaurant roles it's set by the franchisee, and for corporate roles the recruiter who contacts you can tell you how many conversations to expect and who you'll meet.

Many interviews include questions about how you've handled real situations, so prepare examples in STAR form (situation, task, action, result).

Subway interview questions and how to answer them

These are common interview questions, matched to what Subway publicly says. Subway doesn't publish the questions its franchisees or recruiters ask.

Subway describes its food as "freshly made, customizable meals" and "great tasting, accessible food at a compelling value". For corporate roles, a 2026 Subway listing says: "We move fast. We think like owners. We make decisions that matter." Use these as the backbone of your answers.

1. Tell me about yourself.

Keep it short: what you're doing now, one strength that fits the job, and why you want it. For a restaurant role, mention any time you've spent serving people or working on your feet.

2. Why do you want to work at Subway?

Be specific to the restaurant. Subway describes each restaurant as a local small business, so mention that you live nearby, know the restaurant or like working where you see regulars. For a corporate role, say why franchisee success interests you, since a 2026 Subway corporate listing describes its business around "growing franchisee profitability".

3. Tell me about a time you served a customer who was unhappy.

Subway's meals are customised to each guest, so getting an order right matters. Show that you stayed calm, listened, fixed it and kept the line moving.

4. How would you keep food quality up during a rush?

Subway sells freshly made meals. Talk about following the standard every time, keeping your station stocked and clean, and asking for help before quality slips.

5. Tell me about a time you worked as part of a small team.

In a restaurant, one person's slack is felt by everyone. Show how you covered a gap or helped a teammate without being asked.

6. What is your availability?

A franchisee runs the restaurant as a small business and plans a small team's rota around you, so answer honestly and precisely. Only offer shifts you can work every week, and say up front if anything changes in exam periods or holidays.

7. Tell me about a time you were trusted with money or stock.

A franchisee is running their own business and watching costs. Give an example of handling cash, stock or keys responsibly.

8. How do you handle food safety and cleanliness?

Subway sells freshly made, customisable meals, so food safety matters with every order. Describe the habits you'd keep: washing hands, changing gloves, labelling and rotating stock, and cleaning as you go. If you hold a food safety certificate, say so.

9. Describe a time you learned a new task quickly.

A new restaurant job means learning a menu and routines quickly. Show how you learn: watching, asking, practising and checking.

10. For shift lead or manager roles: tell me about a time you coached someone.

Show you can keep standards when the owner isn't there. Give an example of correcting a mistake kindly and checking it stuck.

11. For corporate roles: tell me about a decision you made quickly with limited information.

Subway's listing asks for "energy, accountability and a bias for action". Show how you moved fast, owned the outcome and corrected course when you needed to.

12. For field roles: tell me about a time you influenced someone you didn't manage.

Field roles partner with franchisees who run their own businesses. Show how you used data and built trust to change what someone did.

What happens after the Subway interview?

Subway doesn't publish what happens next for either path. Before you leave the interview, ask when you'll hear back and how. For corporate roles, keep an eye on your phone and email, since by applying you agree to calls or texts about your application.

How to prepare for a Subway interview

  1. Visit the restaurant before the interview, at a busy time if you can, and note how the team works.
  2. Know your availability exactly, with days and hours.
  3. Prepare four or five STAR stories about customers, teamwork, reliability and learning quickly. Our list of behavioural interview questions gives you more to practise on.
  4. For corporate roles, read the listing closely and match an example to each requirement.
  5. Practise out loud, ideally in a mock interview with someone who'll give honest feedback.
  6. Bring two or three questions about training, shifts and what a good first month looks like.
