Sonic Interview Questions and Hiring Process (2026)

The short answer

You apply online for a job at a specific SONIC Drive-In (or at a hiring event), interview with that drive-in’s managers and get an offer if you’re selected. Many drive-ins are run by independent franchisees who make their own hiring decisions, so the format and timeline vary. Prepare for questions on fast, friendly service, staying calm, teamwork and your availability.

  • SONIC says many drive-ins are owned by independent franchisees, each its own employer.
  • Front-line roles include Carhop (or Skating Carhop), Crew Member and Cook.
  • SONIC’s values are Respect, Relationships, Entrepreneurial spirit, Surprise & Delight and Fun.
  • SONIC doesn’t publish interview questions, a timeline or an assessment.

Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs free practice job simulations for job seekers. Cohesyve isn’t affiliated with SONIC Drive-In and doesn’t use SONIC’s questions.

SONIC's hiring process is short: find a job at a drive-in near you, apply online or at a hiring event, interview with the drive-in's managers and get an offer if you're selected. Who runs the process matters. SONIC's careers site says "Many SONIC Drive-In restaurants are owned and operated by an independent franchisee", and that each franchisee is an independent employer responsible for its own hiring decisions.

Everything below about the process comes from SONIC's careers site and job postings, checked in October 2026 and listed in the sources. Where SONIC doesn't say something, we say so rather than guess. The interview questions further down are ones to prepare for, built from what those postings say the job needs.

What is the SONIC hiring process?

You apply for a role at one drive-in, interview with its managers and receive an offer if you're selected. SONIC doesn't publish a standard process beyond that, because franchisees run their own hiring. When someone contacts you, ask what the next steps are and how long they usually take.

Who will employ you at SONIC?

At a franchise drive-in, the franchisee. SONIC's careers site says franchisees are independent employers, solely responsible for hiring decisions, and that employment questions about a franchise restaurant should go to that franchisee. SONIC is part of Inspire Brands, which lists it among its brands.

This affects your interview. One operator can run hiring differently from another nearby, so a friend's experience at another SONIC may not match yours.

How do you apply for a job at SONIC?

Search careers.sonicdrivein.com by role and location, open the posting and select Apply Now. You can also chat with Ally, "SONIC's Recruitment Assistant", to ask questions, find jobs and apply, or join SONIC's talent community for job recommendations.

SONIC also lists Team Member and Management hiring events on its careers site. Check the event listing for what to bring and when to arrive.

What jobs can you apply for at SONIC?

SONIC's careers site names Carhops, Cooks and Managers, and says many managers started as a Cook or a Carhop. The postings we checked:

  • Carhop or Skating Carhop: delivering "a warm, friendly, and fast experience to every guest", knowing the menu well enough to help guests with custom orders, resolving customer concerns, and following safety and sanitation standards.
  • Crew Member: working stations including Fountain & Frozen, Food Production, Grill, Fryer, Switchboard and, where there is one, the Drive-Thru; taking orders and "making accurate change quickly"; making drinks and ice cream treats; packaging orders and checking quality; cleaning.
  • Assistant Manager: training and coaching crew, opening and closing, inventory and food cost, with at least six months of quick service restaurant management or one year of entry-level retail management.

What is the SONIC interview like?

SONIC doesn't publish an interview format, and it varies by operator. Expect to meet a manager from the drive-in. The person who invites you can tell you who you'll meet and how long to allow.

The Carhop posting lists what managers are looking for: a "contagiously positive attitude", the ability to "remain calm, especially in tough situations", a resilient spirit, eagerness to learn, a team mentality and "friendly and smiling faces". Plan an example for each.

Does SONIC have an assessment test?

None of the postings we checked mentions a pre-employment test. Operators run their own hiring, so if a test is part of your application, the drive-in will tell you. Treat claims elsewhere about a standard SONIC test as unconfirmed.

What happens after the SONIC interview?

SONIC doesn't publish a timeline. If you're selected, the drive-in's operator offers you the job, and questions about hours, pay and paperwork go to that operator. If you haven't heard back, call the drive-in or contact the manager who interviewed you a few days after the interview.

SONIC interview questions to prepare for

SONIC doesn't publish its interview questions. These are the questions to prepare for, based on the duties and qualities SONIC's postings and values describe. For "tell me about a time" questions, structure your answer with the STAR method (situation, task, action, result).

1. Why do you want to work at SONIC?

Give a reason tied to the job or the brand. SONIC's careers site talks about careers that start as a Carhop or Cook and grow into management, and its values include Fun and Surprise & Delight. Say which of those draws you, or what you like about SONIC as a customer.

2. Which role interests you: carhop, crew or cook?

Say which you'd prefer and why, then add that you're happy to learn the others. The Carhop posting asks for "a willingness to cross-train on all the stations".

3. Tell me about a time you gave great customer service.

Carhops deliver "a warm, friendly, and fast experience to every guest". Use a real example from a job, school or volunteering where you were friendly and quick, and say how the customer reacted.

4. What would you do if a guest said their order was wrong?

The Carhop posting says you are "empowered to resolve customer concerns". Say you would apologise, check the order, get it fixed quickly and bring in a manager if the guest was still unhappy.

5. How do you stay calm when it's busy or a guest is rude?

The posting asks for the ability to "remain calm, especially in tough situations". Describe what you actually do: take a breath, deal with one thing at a time, keep your tone friendly, and ask for help when you need it.

6. Tell me about a time you made a mistake. What did you do?

SONIC asks for a "resilient spirit – knowing everyone makes mistakes and can bounce back". Pick a small, real mistake, say how you fixed it and what you do differently now. Owning it matters more than the mistake.

7. How would you help a guest who can't decide what to order?

Carhops are asked to be a "menu genius" who helps guests with customisable combinations. Say you'd ask what they usually like, suggest a couple of options and mention one of your own favourites. Knowing a few menu items helps.

8. Tell me about a time you worked as part of a team.

The posting asks for a "team mentality and willingness to help where needed", and SONIC's values include Relationships: "we're there for each other". Describe a time you helped a teammate or pitched in on a task outside your role.

9. Are you comfortable handling cash and making change?

Crew Members take orders and make "accurate change quickly", and the Carhop posting asks for basic maths and reading. Say yes if you are, and give an example of handling money or a till accurately.

10. What is your availability?

The Carhop posting asks for flexible hours, including night, weekend and holiday shifts. Give honest days and hours. Some postings state a minimum age; the Carhop posting we checked required applicants to be 16.

11. For manager roles: tell me about a time you ran a shift.

The Assistant Manager posting asks for "experience running shifts without supervision" and for training and coaching crew. Prepare a STAR story about keeping a shift on track when you were short-staffed, and one about coaching someone.

12. Do you have any questions for us?

Have two ready. Good options: how training works on each station, how shifts are scheduled, and how people move up from carhop or crew into management.

How to prepare for a SONIC interview

  1. Read the posting closely, including the franchisee notice, the stations and any age requirement.
  2. Prepare three or four STAR stories covering customer service, staying calm, teamwork and a mistake you fixed.
  3. Know your availability, including nights, weekends and holidays.
  4. Know a few menu items. Carhops are asked to help guests with custom orders.
  5. Practise your answers out loud, ideally in a mock interview.
  6. Arrive a few minutes early and smile. SONIC's postings ask for friendly, positive people, and first impressions count.

Practising realistic work tasks

Interviews reward prepared stories. Drive-in work rewards judgement under time pressure, and that improves with practice on realistic tasks. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs free practice job simulations for job seekers. It isn't affiliated with SONIC Drive-In and doesn't use SONIC's questions.

FAQs

If I work at a SONIC drive-in, do I work for SONIC?

Not necessarily. SONIC says many drive-ins are owned and operated by independent franchisees, and each franchisee is an independent employer. The posting or the drive-in can tell you who your employer would be.

How old do you have to be to work at SONIC?

SONIC doesn't publish a company-wide minimum age. The Carhop posting we checked said applicants must be 16. Check the posting for the drive-in you want.

Do you need experience to work at SONIC?

The Carhop and Crew Member postings we checked list no experience requirement. The Assistant Manager posting asks for restaurant or retail management experience.

Do SONIC carhops have to skate?

SONIC's postings are titled "Carhop or Skating Carhop" but don't describe a skating requirement. Ask the drive-in in your interview.

Does SONIC have hiring events?

Yes. SONIC's careers site lists Team Member and Management hiring events, with links to upcoming dates.
