Optum interviews focus on your experience and how you work with others. Optum is a UnitedHealth Group company, and its jobs are listed and filled through UnitedHealth Group's careers site, which publishes one hiring process for its whole family of businesses.
The process details below come from UnitedHealth Group's careers pages and its recruiters' advice, linked as we go. Where they don't say something, we say so. The interview questions are ones to prepare for; Optum doesn't publish a list.
The Optum hiring process at a glance

| Step | What happens | What UnitedHealth Group says about timing |

| 2. Assessment (if applicable) | Some positions need an online assessment of skills and competencies. You'll get instructions if so. | Not published |
| 3. Application review | Recruiters check you meet the qualifications for the role. | Several days or weeks, depending on applicant volume |
| 4. Interview | If you're selected, a recruiter may schedule a phone, video or in-person interview. | Not published |

You get email updates throughout, and you can check your status on the Candidate Dashboard.
What is the Optum hiring process?
You find a role on the UnitedHealth Group job search, filter by business (Optum or UnitedHealthcare), apply through your dashboard, and then move through any assessment, recruiter review, interviews and a decision. Optum roles in India, including Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Gurgaon, are listed on the same site.
Applying
- Apply only where you qualify. UnitedHealth Group's recruiters say the most important thing is to apply for roles where you meet all the required qualifications and most of the preferred ones. They say they "can't stress this enough".
- Tailor your resume to each role. Use keywords from the job description, including the software and products you've used, and keep it short. UnitedHealth Group suggests one page unless you have extensive experience.
- Use a chronological format. Its recruiters say this helps hiring managers see your experience and progression.
- Be accurate. An Optum recruiter quoted by UnitedHealth Group says, "in Optum, we value integrity," when advising candidates to keep resume details authentic, and UnitedHealth Group says the same applies to interviews.

Does Optum have an online assessment?
For some positions, yes. UnitedHealth Group says some roles need an online assessment to evaluate skills and competencies, and some interviews may include an assessment too. You'll get instructions if your role has one.
It doesn't publish which roles have an assessment, what it contains, how long it takes or how it's scored. Prep sites describe coding rounds for technology roles in India; treat those details as unconfirmed and follow the instructions you're sent.
How long does the Optum hiring process take?
UnitedHealth Group doesn't publish an end-to-end timeline. It says recruiters' review of your application can take several days or weeks, depending on how many people apply. Watch your email and the Candidate Dashboard for updates.
What is the Optum interview process?
If you're selected, a recruiter schedules your interview. UnitedHealth Group's candidate FAQs list three formats:
| Format | What it is |
|---|---|
| In person | An interview at an office, clinic or event |
| Virtual live | A real-time conversation over video |
| Digital recorded | You record answers to preset questions, which a person then reviews |
UnitedHealth Group says all digital interviews are reviewed by a team member, not artificial intelligence. It doesn't publish how many interview rounds there are; that depends on the role.
The recorded video interview
UnitedHealth Group says you might have a digital video interview whether the role is on-site, hybrid or remote. Its guide to preparing for the hiring process says:
- Every candidate gets the same set of questions.
- Your interview can be shared with several teams, which speeds up review.
- If it isn't live, questions appear on screen and your answers are recorded.
- Treat it as a traditional interview. Frame yourself well, speak clearly and look at the camera.
Our guide to one-way video interviews explains how this format works and how to practise for it.
What Optum's recruiters say they look for
From UnitedHealth Group's recruiter tips, hiring managers like to see:
- top performance in your previous role;
- the ability to collaborate with colleagues around the world;
- strong communication, including presenting information to all levels.
For culture fit, they point to the mission and values, acting with integrity, and being comfortable in a fast-paced environment.
What interview questions does Optum ask?
Optum doesn't publish its interview questions. The questions below are ones to prepare for, built on what UnitedHealth Group's recruiters say they look for and its six values:
| Value | What UnitedHealth Group says it means |
|---|---|
| Integrity | We do the right thing and follow through on our commitments |
| Compassion | We listen, advocate and act with urgency for each other and those we serve |
| Inclusion | We welcome, value, hear and respect all voices and diverse points of view |
| Relationships | We work together to deepen connections and collaboration for better outcomes |
| Innovation | We invent a better future by learning from the past |
| Performance | We strive for high quality results in everything we do |
Use the STAR method (situation, task, action, result) for every "tell me about a time" question.
1. Tell me about yourself.
Keep it to a minute or two. Say what you do now, the experience that matters for this role and why you're applying. End on the job you're interviewing for, not your whole history.
2. Why Optum?
UnitedHealth Group's recruiters say to research the specific business line you're interviewing for. Optum brings together care delivery, behavioural health, financial services and technology, so name the part you'd join and what draws you to it. Recruiters also suggest knowing the organisation's recent awards and recognition.
3. Why do you want to work in healthcare?
Link your answer to the mission: helping people live healthier lives and helping make the health system work better for everyone. A personal reason is fine if it's genuine. Recruiters say to balance preparation with speaking from the heart.
4. Walk me through how your experience fits this job.
A UnitedHealth Group recruiter advises reviewing the job description and preparing a past work example for each responsibility and qualification. Go through the main ones in order, with one example each.
5. What was your top achievement in your last role?
Recruiters say hiring managers like to see top performance in your previous role, and the Performance value is about high-quality results. Give a specific result, how you measured it and what you did yourself.
6. Tell me about a time you handled an ambiguous situation.
This comes straight from the recruiters' advice: bring examples of handling ambiguous situations where you had to find answers and solve the problem yourself. Show how you worked out what mattered, who you asked and what you decided.
7. Tell me about a time you worked with colleagues in other locations or time zones.
Hiring managers look for the ability to collaborate with a global group of colleagues. Explain how you kept people aligned, for example with handovers, written updates or overlapping meeting times. This maps to Relationships.
8. Explain something complex to someone without your background.
Recruiters name strong communication, including presenting to all levels. Pick a topic from your work and explain it plainly, as you would to a senior leader or a patient. Check understanding as you go.
9. Tell me about a time you did the right thing when it was difficult.
Integrity is UnitedHealth Group's first value: doing the right thing and following through on commitments. A small, real example, such as admitting a mistake or keeping a promise under pressure, works better than a dramatic one.
10. Tell me about a time you advocated for a customer, patient or colleague.
Compassion means listening, advocating and acting with urgency. Describe how you understood what the person needed, what you did on their behalf and how quickly.
11. Tell me about a time you included a view different from your own.
Inclusion is about hearing and respecting all voices. Show that you asked for other views, changed something because of them and got a better result.
12. Tell me about a time you improved a process.
Innovation at UnitedHealth Group means learning from the past to build something better. Explain what wasn't working, what you changed and the result.
13. How do you handle a fast-paced environment with changing priorities?
Recruiters say strong candidates are comfortable with a fast pace. Give an example of reprioritising quickly, how you decided what came first and how you kept people informed.
14. Do you have any questions for us?
Recruiters say to come with thought-out questions. Ask about the team's current priorities, what success looks like in the first few months or how the role supports the wider mission.
How to prepare for an Optum interview
- Read the job description line by line and prepare a work example for each responsibility and qualification.
- Research the business line, Optum's recent news and UnitedHealth Group's mission and values.
- Prepare six to eight STAR stories covering performance, ambiguity, collaboration, communication and integrity. Our list of behavioural interview questions gives you more to practise on.
- For a recorded interview, find a quiet space with reliable equipment and practise answering on camera.
- Show you want this role. Recruiters say hiring managers want to know you're committed to their opportunity.
- Do a mock interview with someone who will give you honest feedback.
- Send a thank-you note afterwards, as UnitedHealth Group's recruiters suggest.
- Check every recruiter email. Real ones come from @uhg.com or @optum.com, and a request for money is a red flag.
Practising realistic work tasks
Optum's recruiters want examples from real work: ambiguous problems, results and collaboration. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. It isn't affiliated with Optum or UnitedHealth Group and doesn't use their assessments or questions.
