Mayo Clinic hires through applications to specific open jobs on its careers site, then an interview process, then an offer. Every offer is contingent on a post-offer placement assessment that includes a urine drug screen, an immunisation review and tuberculin (TB) skin testing, if applicable. Mayo doesn't publish its interview format, its questions or how long hiring takes.
Everything below about Mayo Clinic's process comes from its own careers pages and job postings, linked as we go. Where Mayo doesn't say something, we say so rather than guess. The interview questions further down are ones to prepare for, built from Mayo's stated values and its own job descriptions.

What is the Mayo Clinic hiring process?
You apply online for a specific open job, go through an interview process, and receive an offer if you're selected, which depends on a post-offer health and drug screen. Mayo's recruitment fraud page sets the order: Mayo Clinic will not make an offer unless you've applied for the job through its website "and an interview process has occurred".
Mayo hires for clinical and non-clinical jobs across its three major campuses in Phoenix and Scottsdale (Arizona), Jacksonville (Florida) and Rochester (Minnesota), at Mayo Clinic Health System sites in Midwestern communities, and at international locations. Its careers site separates US, UK and UAE applicants, so apply through the right one.

How do you apply for a job at Mayo Clinic?
Search open jobs on jobs.mayoclinic.org and apply for the specific role. A few things to know:
- Read the qualifications closely. Mayo's postings separate required qualifications, preferred experience and licences. The emergency department RN posting we checked, for example, asks for a current RN licence, BLS and ACLS, with PALS within six months of starting.
- Check sponsorship on the posting. It varies by job. That RN posting was eligible for TN sponsorship; an environmental services supervisor posting we checked said visa sponsorship isn't available.
- New nurses have a route in. Mayo's Nurse Residency Program is for nurses with less than 12 months of experience.
- Veterans and service members can look at Mayo's SkillBridge internships, which are for service members within 180 days of leaving the military.
- Ask for help if you need it. Mayo says you can request a reasonable accommodation through HR Connect for any step, including the application, interview, pre-employment testing and onboarding.
Does Mayo Clinic have pre-employment testing?
Mayo mentions pre-employment testing but doesn't say which roles have it. Its careers site names "pre-employment testing" when it lists the steps you can get accommodations for, but it doesn't say what tests cover or how long they take. If you're asked to take one, ask your recruiter what it involves.
This is separate from the post-offer placement assessment, which is a health and drug screen after you've received an offer. If a pre-employment test shows you workplace scenarios and asks what you would do, it's a situational judgement format; our guide to situational judgement tests explains how that format works in general.
What is the Mayo Clinic interview process like?
Mayo Clinic doesn't publish its interview format, how long interviews last or how many rounds there are. Accounts on review sites vary by role and campus, so treat them as anecdotal. When your recruiter contacts you, ask who you'll meet, whether it's in person or by video, and how long to allow.
What you can prepare for is what Mayo says matters. Its about page names its primary value, "The needs of the patient come first", and describes "a culture of teamwork, professionalism and mutual respect". Its job postings add the practical side:
| What Mayo's postings ask for | Example from a posting we checked |
|---|---|
| Communication, verbal and written | RN, emergency department |
| Working in a team, often a multidisciplinary one | RN; environmental services supervisor |
| Adapting to unpredictable situations | RN, emergency department |
| Leadership | RN; environmental services supervisor |
| Critical thinking | RN, emergency department |
| Flexible hours, which may include nights, weekends, holidays and on-call | RN, emergency department |
| Mentoring and teaching, such as acting as a preceptor | RN, emergency department |
For nursing roles, Mayo says its Nursing Care Model combines Relationship-Based Care with an evidence-based approach, aiming for a stronger connection between patient and caregiver. Expect questions about how you build that connection.
What happens after the Mayo Clinic interview?
If you're selected, you receive an offer, and the offer depends on completing Mayo's post-offer placement assessment: a urine drug screen, an immunisation review and TB skin testing, if applicable. You also complete a Form I-9, which Mayo checks through E-Verify. Mayo doesn't publish how long any of this takes.
Check that every message about your offer is genuine. Mayo says its recruiters' emails always end in "@mayo.edu", that recruiters never ask for personal information by email or social media chat, and that it never asks you to buy equipment or gift cards or to send money.
Mayo Clinic interview questions to prepare for
Mayo Clinic doesn't publish its interview questions. These are the questions to prepare for, based on Mayo's primary value, its stated culture and the duties in its own job postings. For "tell me about a time" questions, use the STAR method (situation, task, action, result).
1. Why do you want to work at Mayo Clinic?
Go beyond its reputation. Connect your answer to "The needs of the patient come first" and to something specific about the role or campus, such as the Nurse Residency Program if you're a new nurse, or the chance to work in a large multidisciplinary team.
2. Tell me about a time you put a patient's needs first.
This is the question Mayo's primary value points to. Choose a time you went beyond the routine for a patient (or, in a non-clinical job, a customer or visitor): you noticed something, acted on it and checked the result. Keep the focus on what the patient needed.
3. Tell me about a time you worked with people from other disciplines.
Mayo describes its environment as multidisciplinary and team-oriented. Describe a case where you worked with doctors, therapists, pharmacists or other departments, how you shared information and how the patient benefited.
4. Tell me about a time you disagreed with a colleague.
Mayo names professionalism and mutual respect as part of its culture. Show that you raised the issue privately and calmly, listened to their side and focused on the patient or the work. Say how it was resolved.
5. Describe a situation that changed suddenly. How did you respond?
The emergency department RN posting asks for the ability to adapt to unpredictable situations. Use an example where priorities shifted fast, and walk through how you reassessed, communicated and acted.
6. Tell me about a time you made or caught a mistake.
Safety-minded honesty matters in healthcare. Pick a real example, explain how you found it, whom you told and what you changed afterwards. Avoid examples that suggest you hid an error.
7. How do you communicate with a patient or family member who is anxious or upset?
Mayo's postings ask for strong communication, and its Nursing Care Model is built on relationships. Talk about listening first, explaining in plain language, checking they understood and knowing when to bring in someone else.
8. How do you build a relationship with a patient during a short stay or a busy shift?
This fits nursing roles under Relationship-Based Care. Give specific habits: introducing yourself and your role, explaining what will happen next, asking what matters to the patient and following through on small promises.
9. How do you prioritise when several patients or tasks need you at once?
The RN posting asks for critical thinking, and the supervisor posting for planning and coordinating work. Explain how you judge urgency, delegate where appropriate and keep the team informed.
10. Tell me about a time you taught or mentored someone.
Mayo's RN posting mentions the preceptor role and asks for skill in mentoring and teaching. Describe someone you helped learn a task or settle into a team, and how you knew they had got there.
11. What is your availability?
The RN posting asks for flexible hours that may include days, evenings, nights, holidays, weekends and on-call. Be honest, and check the shift details listed on the posting before the interview.
12. You work in a non-clinical role. How does your work affect patients?
For roles such as environmental services, administration or IT, expect a version of this. Link your work to the patient's experience: a clean room, an accurate record or a system that works when a clinician needs it. That is "the needs of the patient come first" from your side of the hospital.
13. What questions do you have for us?
Ask about orientation and training, how the team supports new starters, and what the best people in the role do differently.
How to prepare for a Mayo Clinic interview
- Read the posting line by line and match each qualification, licence and requirement to your experience.
- Write five or six STAR stories: putting a patient first, teamwork across disciplines, a disagreement, a sudden change, a mistake and teaching someone.
- Have your licences and certifications ready to discuss, with dates, for clinical roles.
- Practise out loud, ideally in a mock interview with someone who'll give you honest feedback. Our list of behavioural interview questions gives you more to practise with.
- Plan for the post-offer assessment. Gather your immunisation records early, so the immunisation review doesn't hold up your start.
- Prepare two or three questions about training, the team and the unit or department.
Practising realistic work tasks
Interviews reward prepared stories, and healthcare work rewards judgement under pressure, which improves with practice on realistic tasks. The post-offer placement assessment includes an immunisation review and TB skin testing, if applicable. Mayo doesn't list which immunisations it requires on its careers site, so ask your recruiter.
How long does the Mayo Clinic hiring process take?
Mayo Clinic doesn't publish a timeline. Ask your recruiter what to expect after each stage.

Does Mayo Clinic hire new graduate nurses?
Yes. Its Nurse Residency Program is for nurses with less than 12 months of experience and is completed within the first year.
