Kaiser Permanente Interview Questions and Hiring Process

The short answer

At Kaiser Permanente, you submit interest online, some positions add a pre-hire assessment, a Talent Acquisition Professional screens you before further interviews, and selected candidates get a verbal then written offer, with drug and background checks before the start date. Prepare stories about patient or member care, teamwork and doing the right thing, since KP describes itself as a collaborative, mission-driven team.

  • Starting a pre-hire assessment usually counts as an attempt, so only begin when you’re ready.
  • Request any accommodation before you take an assessment, not after.
  • KP doesn’t consent to interviews being recorded or transcribed.
  • KP doesn’t publish a timeline; it says finding the right people can take time.

Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations with a scored report on where you lost marks. Cohesyve isn’t affiliated with Kaiser Permanente and doesn’t use Kaiser Permanente’s assessments or questions.

Kaiser Permanente interviews start with a screen by a Talent Acquisition Professional, and further interviews can be by phone, in person or by video. Some positions add an online pre-hire assessment before that, testing aptitude, behavioural competencies, skills such as typing, or job knowledge.

The process details below come from Kaiser Permanente's careers site, linked as we go. Where KP doesn't say something, we say so. KP doesn't publish a list of interview questions, so the questions below are ones to prepare for, with answers tied to what KP says about its mission and its teams.

What is the Kaiser Permanente hiring process?

You submit interest in a job online, complete any pre-hire assessment the role needs, are screened and interviewed, receive an offer if selected, and pass pre-employment checks before you start. KP says it places "a high emphasis on matching the right talent with the right roles."

Submitting interest

KP calls applying "submitting interest". Its searching jobs page and FAQs explain the mechanics:

  • Check the required qualifications. KP asks you to make sure you meet all the required ones before you submit.
  • Create an account. You need one to submit interest. Use a private email address and keep your phone number current, because recruiters contact candidates by phone and email.
  • Complete your profile, with employment and education history. A résumé is encouraged but optional. Fill every field; write "N/A" if a question doesn't apply.
  • Pick the right résumé. When you submit, tick the job-specific résumé or cover letter so recruiters see the right one.
  • Save drafts if you need to. If you can't finish a draft later, the job has probably been taken down.
  • Check "My Submissions" to confirm your submission went through.

Some job numbers are internal-only and may open to external candidates later. For union-represented positions, KP says collective bargaining agreements apply.

Does Kaiser Permanente have a pre-hire assessment?

For some positions, yes. KP's pre-hire assessments page says that, depending on the role, they cover aptitude, behavioural competencies, skills such as typing and data entry, and knowledge. KP doesn't publish the question count, time limit or provider.

KP doesn't describe the format of its behavioural competency assessments. If yours shows you situations and asks what you would do, our guide to situational judgement tests explains how that format works, and our explainer on psychometric assessments covers aptitude and personality-style tests in general.

KP's own advice: read the instructions carefully, don't start until you're ready, and leave time to submit before the posting closes. If you have to wait to retake, KP suggests using that time to build the relevant knowledge and skills.

What is the Kaiser Permanente interview process?

If your skills and experience appear to match, a Talent Acquisition Professional may contact you for more screening. Further interviews may be by phone, in person and/or video. KP doesn't publish how many interviews there are, how long they last or who sits on them; that varies by role, so ask your recruiter.

Two rules to know:

  • No recording. KP says it doesn't give permission or consent to interviews being recorded or transcribed, so don't use a recorder or AI note-taker.
  • Not everyone hears back. KP says it can't contact every person who submits interest, because of volume.

What happens after the Kaiser Permanente interview?

If you're selected, a Talent Acquisition Professional calls you with a verbal offer, followed by a written offer letter. After you accept, you must pass the applicable pre-employment screenings, including drug and background checks, before KP confirms your start date.

KP's FAQs say that after a conditional offer it shares your details with vendors for background checks, drug and health screening, and E-Verify. It asks about criminal conviction history as part of its commitment to a safe environment for patients, members, staff and job seekers, and reviews it in line with applicable laws and regulations.

Common Kaiser Permanente interview questions and how to answer them

KP's mission is to "provide high-quality, affordable health care services and to improve the health of our members and the communities we serve." Its careers site describes the vision of being "trusted partners in total health", an integrated model with insurance, care providers and care services under one roof, and a commitment to preventive care, equity and respect. It says it's looking for people who fit "a highly collaborative, mission-driven team". Tie your answers to those.

Use the STAR method (situation, task, action, result) for any "tell me about a time" question.

1. Tell me about yourself.

Keep it to a minute or two: your current role, the experience that matters for this job, and why you want to do it at KP. End on the role, not your life story.

2. Why Kaiser Permanente?

Be specific. KP's own pages give you material: the integrated model, the focus on prevention and total health, or its commitment to eliminating health care disparities. Pick the one that connects to your role and say why it matters to you.

3. Tell me about a time you put a patient or customer first.

KP's mission centres on its members' health. Give an example where you understood what someone needed and made sure they got it. In non-clinical roles, a customer, caller or internal colleague works.

4. Tell me about a time you worked as part of a team to solve a problem.

KP describes itself as highly collaborative. Show your part clearly, how you shared information and how the team reached the result together.

5. Describe a time you disagreed with a colleague. How did you handle it?

Show respect and focus on the shared goal. KP says it wants everyone to feel respected and supported, so describe how you listened before you argued your case.

6. Tell me about a time you made a mistake.

In health care, owning mistakes and fixing them quickly matters. Choose a real, moderate mistake, say what you did straight away and what you changed afterwards.

7. Describe a time you had to follow a procedure you didn't agree with.

Show that you followed it, raised your concern through the right channel and understood why the rule existed. Patient safety and privacy rules are a good example for clinical and administrative roles.

8. Tell me about a time you handled a difficult patient, member or customer.

Explain how you stayed calm, listened, and found a solution or the right person to help. End with how the person left the conversation.

9. How do you handle a heavy workload or competing priorities?

Give a concrete example of how you prioritised, what you dropped or delegated, and how you kept quality up. For clinical roles, say how you kept patient safety first.

10. Tell me about a time you helped someone understand something complex.

Members and patients often need clear explanations. Show how you checked what they knew, explained it plainly and confirmed they understood.

11. What does health equity mean to you?

KP's careers site says it's committed to eliminating health care disparities and believes everyone deserves access to high-quality, affordable care. Give a practical answer: how you'd treat every patient or member fairly, and an example if you have one.

12. Why are you interested in this role and this location?

KP says it places a high emphasis on matching the right talent with the right roles. Show that you've read the job description, meet the required qualifications and can work the shifts and location involved.

13. Do you have any questions for us?

Ask about the team, how it measures success, training for new starters, or what a typical day looks like. If the role is union-represented, it's reasonable to ask which agreement applies.

How to prepare for a Kaiser Permanente interview

  1. Re-read the job posting and check you meet every required qualification.
  2. Do any pre-hire assessment when you're ready, on a laptop or desktop, with time to submit before the posting closes. Request accommodations first if you need them.
  3. Read KP's mission and "The KP Difference" pages so you can answer "Why Kaiser Permanente?" with specifics.
  4. Prepare five or six STAR stories about patient or customer care, teamwork, mistakes, pressure and doing the right thing. Our list of behavioural interview questions gives you more to practise on.
  5. Ask your recruiter about the format: phone, in person or video, and who you'll meet.
  6. Practise out loud, ideally in a mock interview.
  7. Keep your phone and email current, since KP recruiters contact candidates by both.
  8. Watch for scams. KP's fraud notice says genuine emails come from @kp.org, applications go only through its careers site, and it never asks for money or card details.
