Johnson & Johnson's own interview advice tells you to expect behavioural questions, such as how you handled stress or a conflict, alongside questions about your experience. J&J says you'll usually meet the hiring manager or other team members, answer questions about your academic and work experience, and have a chance to ask your own questions. It recommends learning about the business that's interviewing you. All interviews are currently held digitally, either as a pre-recorded video or a live video call.
Everything below comes from J&J's careers site and its corporate pages, linked as we go. Where J&J doesn't say something, we say so.

What is the Johnson & Johnson hiring process?
You apply online, J&J reviews your application, a recruiter contacts you if you're selected, you interview by video, and you get an offer if there's a fit. J&J's How we hire page sets out these steps, and its hiring FAQs fill in the details.
J&J has two businesses, Innovative Medicine and MedTech, and hires across areas such as oncology, immunology, neuroscience, medical affairs, market access, data science, technology and cybersecurity, orthopaedics and surgical robotics. The process is the same shape across them, but read each posting for its requirements.

How do you apply to Johnson & Johnson?
Search jobs on careers.jnj.com, click Apply Now, create an account and upload your resume. Check your inbox for a confirmation email and follow the steps it sets out. A few rules from the FAQs:
- You can't edit a submitted application. To change something, contact your recruiter or submit a new application.
- You can't check a submitted application's status online. If a posting disappears, it has been filled or is no longer available.
- Respond quickly to job alerts. Postings stay up for at least a week.
- J&J generally doesn't sponsor visas or work permits. You usually need to be authorised to work where the job is based.
- Join the Global Talent Hub if you can't find the right role. J&J calls it "the first place our recruiters look when they have a new role". You still have to apply for specific jobs.
J&J also runs paid career training programmes in areas such as electrophysiology and medtech sales, and dedicated routes for veterans and military spouses.
How long does the Johnson & Johnson hiring process take?
J&J doesn't publish an end-to-end timeline. It says reviewing applications can take weeks, and that a recruiter contacts you if you're selected. If you're referred and not hired, J&J says you can be considered for other jobs for up to 12 months.
What is the Johnson & Johnson interview process?
J&J says "all interviews are being conducted digitally", in two formats:
| Format | What happens | Length J&J gives |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-recorded interview | You record answers to questions J&J sends. J&J says you can review and re-record your answers twice before submitting. | Submissions usually around 10 minutes |
| Live video interview | A traditional interview held online. | 30 minutes to one hour |
In either format, J&J says you'll usually meet the hiring manager or other team members, answer questions about your academic and work experience, and have a chance to ask your own questions. It recommends learning about the business that's interviewing you. Its first-round interview advice adds that a first round may include several people, sometimes the whole team.
J&J doesn't publish how many rounds there are, or whether a role includes a case study or presentation. Ask your recruiter what the next round involves.
Does Johnson & Johnson have an online assessment?
J&J's careers site doesn't describe an online test or assessment in its hiring process. If you're sent one, the invitation will say what it is. Our guides to psychometric assessments and situational judgement tests explain the common formats.
What does Johnson & Johnson look for?
J&J's own interview advice points to three things:
- Authenticity. Its application tips say "being authentic and genuine is one of the most important things to us".
- Knowledge of Our Credo. J&J tells candidates to know its mission and values, and quotes "Our Credo guides everything we do".
- Ideas for the role. It suggests thinking through ideas before the interview: messaging and objection handling for sales roles, or how your expertise adds value for technical ones.
Our Credo, written in 1943 by Robert Wood Johnson, sets J&J's responsibilities in order:
| Order | Responsibility to | What it means for your answers |
|---|---|---|
| First | Patients, doctors and nurses, and everyone who uses its products | Show you think about the end user and about quality |
| Second | Employees | Show respect, fairness and how you develop others |
| Third | Communities | Show you think beyond your own team |
| Final | Stockholders | Show you understand results come from getting the first three right |
J&J's purpose is: "We blend heart, science and ingenuity to profoundly impact health for humanity."
Common Johnson & Johnson interview questions and how to answer them
J&J doesn't publish a question list, and questions vary by role and team. The ones below come from J&J's own interview advice and from what it says it looks for. Use the STAR method (situation, task, action, result) for "tell me about a time" questions. J&J's advice is to rehearse your answers but not memorise them.
1. Why do you want to work at Johnson & Johnson?
Name something specific: the part of the business you'd join, a product area or a recent announcement. J&J suggests following company news before your interview. Link it to the Credo's first responsibility, to patients and the people who treat them.
2. What does Our Credo mean to you?
Show you've read it. Pick one responsibility and give an example of when you acted that way, such as putting product quality or a patient's safety ahead of a deadline.
3. Tell me about a stressful situation at work and how you handled it.
J&J uses this as an example of a behavioural question. Frame the challenge, explain what you did and say what you learned. J&J notes the interview itself is a stressful situation, so staying calm is part of the answer.
4. Tell me about a time you resolved a conflict with a co-worker, client or vendor.
Another example J&J gives. Keep it positive: J&J's advice is to talk about what you learned from challenges, not to complain about former employers.
5. Tell me about a time you put the patient or customer first.
This tests the Credo's first responsibility. Choose an example where you changed your plan because of the end user's needs, and say what happened as a result.
6. Tell me about a time you raised a concern about quality, safety or compliance.
Healthcare work is regulated, and the Credo puts patients first. Show you speak up early, follow the process and escalate when you should.
7. What ideas do you have for this role?
J&J tells candidates to brainstorm ideas before interviewing. For sales, think about messaging and handling objections. For technical roles, explain how your expertise would add value. Offer them as starting points, not finished plans.
8. Tell me about a time you worked with people from other functions.
J&J's teams span research, medical affairs, market access, sales and technology. Describe how you got people with different priorities to agree, and what you did when they didn't.
9. Tell me about a time you helped a colleague develop.
This fits the Credo's responsibility to employees. Give a concrete example of coaching, sharing knowledge or giving honest feedback.
10. Tell me about a time you had to learn something quickly.
J&J's areas change fast, from robotics to new therapies. Show how you got up to speed and what you'd do differently.
11. Tell me about yourself.
Keep it to your path, your strongest relevant experience and why this role is the next step. J&J says it wants to meet "the real you", so be genuine.
12. Do you have any questions for us?
J&J recommends asking about the role and the interviewer, such as what brought them to the company, and about the business's challenges. Questions about pain points also show you understand the business.
How to prepare for a Johnson & Johnson interview
- Read Our Credo and prepare one story for each of its first three responsibilities.
- Read the job posting closely and match two or three of your stories to its requirements.
- Follow recent J&J news for the business you're applying to, so "Why J&J?" has a specific answer.
- Prepare five or six STAR stories covering stress, conflict, patients or customers, quality, teamwork and learning. Our list of behavioural interview questions gives you more to practise on.
- Practise on camera for a pre-recorded interview. Check your lighting, sound and connection, and use the chance to review your answers.
- Rehearse out loud without memorising, ideally in a mock interview with someone who'll give honest feedback.
- Prepare questions about the team, the role's challenges and what success looks like in the first months.
Practising realistic work tasks
Behavioural interviews reward prepared stories, and judgement on realistic tasks improves with practice. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. It isn't affiliated with Johnson & Johnson and doesn't use J&J's interview questions or assessments.
