Jimmy John's doesn't publish what its interviews cover; its job postings ask for: fast, accurate sandwich making, friendly service, reliability on busy shifts and, for drivers, a clean driving record. The questions below are the topics its six values and its postings point to, with how to answer each.
Everything here comes from Jimmy John's careers site and postings on it, linked as we go. One thing to know first: many Jimmy John's shops are owned by independent franchisees. Jimmy John's careers site says each franchisee is the employer and is "solely responsible for hiring decisions" at its restaurants, so the steps and the interview can differ from shop to shop.

What is the Jimmy John's hiring process?
You find a job on the careers site, apply, and interview with the shop that's hiring. Jimmy John's doesn't publish a single process because the employer for each restaurant, whether the company or a franchisee, runs its own hiring.
How to apply
- Search the careers site. careers.jimmyjohns.com lets you search by role and location. Store roles include In-Shopper (listed as Inshop), Delivery Driver, Person in Charge (PIC), Assistant Manager and 2nd Assistant Manager.
- Chat with Ally. The careers site introduces Ally as "Jimmy John's Recruitment Assistant", a chat assistant that answers questions about working there, helps you find a job and helps you apply.
- Go to a hiring event. The site lists separate Team Member Hiring Events and Management Hiring Events.
- Join the Talent Community to be told about suitable openings.
Read the posting carefully before you apply, because requirements, benefits and pay are set by the employer for that shop. The careers site says its benefits "might vary depending on the location".

What does a Jimmy John's in-shopper or delivery driver do?
The postings set out what you'll be asked about in the interview.
In-shoppers greet customers as they come in and leave, take orders, run the register and handle cash, and "Make fast, accurate, and consistent sandwiches" following portion sizes and recipes. They take phone orders, complete delivery tickets and clean the tables, floors, windows, drinks station and restrooms. The in-shop posting we checked asks for basic maths, "addition, subtraction, and understand basic fractions", the ability to lift up to 50 pounds, and willingness to work overtime, holidays and weekends.
Delivery drivers aim to "get that sandwich in the customer's hand as quick as can be" by learning efficient routes, double-checking orders and driving safely. The driver posting requires you to:
- be at least 18;
- have a vehicle, a valid driver's licence, proof of insurance and a clean driving record;
- work as an in-shopper when there are no deliveries.
Assistant managers help the general manager run the shop. The 2nd Assistant Manager posting asks you to be able to "perform, teach and train" the Assistant Manager, PIC, InShopper and Delivery Driver roles and to handle "fast-paced and high stress situations".
What is the Jimmy John's interview like?
Jimmy John's doesn't publish an interview format, length or number of rounds, and the shop's owner decides how it runs. Ask whoever schedules you who you'll meet and how long to allow.
What Jimmy John's does publish is its values and what its postings want. Its careers site describes the culture as "fast-paced, high-energy", and its in-shop posting asks for "a positive and enthusiastic approach to all assignments". Expect questions about speed, accuracy, customer service, cleanliness and your availability. Driver and assistant manager postings require a clean driving record, so be ready to talk about yours.
Does Jimmy John's have an assessment?
Jimmy John's careers site doesn't describe a pre-hire test, and the postings we checked don't mention one. Some franchisees may use their own, so check the posting or ask. The in-shop posting lists basic maths as a requirement, so be ready to make change and work with simple fractions.
How long does the Jimmy John's hiring process take?
Jimmy John's doesn't publish a timeline, and each franchisee hires on its own schedule. The careers site links to team member and management hiring events, with dates on the event pages.
Common Jimmy John's interview questions and how to answer them
These questions follow Jimmy John's six published values and its in-shop, driver and manager postings. Answer the "tell me about a time" ones in STAR form (situation, task, action, result); our STAR method guide shows how.
1. Why do you want to work at Jimmy John's?
Be specific. The careers site says "We're real people, serving real food, real fast," and its purpose is "We exist to make the day-to-day a little easier." Say what draws you: a fast-paced shift, the team, or a path into management, which the site's "Make a Deal, Keep a Deal" training section describes.
2. What is your availability?
Postings ask for overtime, holidays and weekends as the business needs. Give an exact, honest answer, and make sure it matches your application.
3. How do you stay fast without making mistakes?
Speed and accuracy are central to the job: the posting says "fast, accurate, and consistent sandwiches". Jimmy John's Meticulous value is "Obsessive attention to detail and precision in everything we do." Give an example of a busy shift where you kept quality up, and say how: following the recipe, checking each order, keeping your station stocked.
4. Tell me about a time you followed a process exactly.
In-shoppers must "Comply with all portion sizes, recipes, systems, and procedures" and fill out systems paperwork "with 100% accuracy and integrity". Pick any job, school or volunteer example where getting the steps right mattered.
5. Tell me about a time you helped a customer.
The Big-Hearted value is "We're welcoming, attentive, and always ready to help each other and our customers." Choose a story where you were warm and quick, and say what difference it made to the customer.
6. How would you handle an order that went out wrong?
Show that you'd apologise, fix it fast and check what went wrong so it doesn't happen again. Jimmy John's Genuine value is "We say what we mean and do what we say," so own the mistake and say what you changed.
7. Tell me about a promise you kept when it was hard.
The Trustworthy value is "Make a deal, keep a deal. We deliver on our promise. Every Time." Turning up for every shift you agreed to counts. So does finishing a task you said you'd do, even when it got busy.
8. Are you comfortable with cleaning duties?
Cleaning is in the in-shop posting we checked: tables, floors, windows, the drinks station and restrooms. Say yes honestly and give an example of keeping a workplace clean without being asked.
9. Can you handle cash and make change accurately?
The posting lists cash handling and basic maths. Mention any till or cash experience, and be ready for a quick mental-maths question.
10. For drivers: how do you deliver quickly and safely?
The driver posting says "always being safe and law abiding" while learning "the most efficient route" and "double checking orders". Talk about planning your route, checking the order before you leave and never speeding to save time. Have your licence and insurance details ready.
11. Tell me about a time you took initiative.
The Go-Getter value is "Thinking and acting with an energetic, do-it-now mindset. No hype, no excuses." Pick an example where you saw something that needed doing and did it without being told.
12. For managers: how would you run a rush when you're short-staffed?
The 2nd Assistant Manager posting asks for the ability to "handle fast-paced and high stress situations" and to "Organize and establish priorities in the store with minimal supervision". Explain how you'd assign stations, step onto the line yourself and keep the team calm. Jimmy John's Bold value, "No hesitation", fits here.
