IHOP Interview Questions and Hiring Process 2026

The short answer

IHOP interview questions focus on guest service, teamwork, handling cash and working shifts, and you’re interviewed by the restaurant that’s hiring. Many IHOP restaurants are franchised, so the franchisee runs its own hiring. IHOP doesn’t publish an interview format or a hiring timeline.

  • IHOP has pointed applicants to ihop.com/careers, and franchise companies also post on their own job pages.
  • The host postings we checked need no experience; the cook posting asks for six months to a year.
  • Expect questions about greeting guests, complaints, cash and availability.
  • IHOP doesn’t publish a pre-hire test.

Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations with a scored report on where you lost marks. Cohesyve isn’t affiliated with IHOP and doesn’t use IHOP’s questions or hiring materials.

IHOP interview questions centre on guest service, teamwork and reliability, the things IHOP restaurants' postings ask for. There's no single IHOP interview. When IHOP announced a hiring push in 2021, the roles were for its franchised locations, and two of the postings we checked name the franchise company that employs you.

Below is what IHOP and its restaurants publish, then 12 questions to prepare with how to answer each one for IHOP. Where nothing is published, we say so.

What is the IHOP hiring process?

You apply for a role at a specific restaurant, and that restaurant's employer handles the rest. Two of the postings we checked are from a franchise company. One says plainly: "River Road Restaurants is a franchisee of IHOP." Two IHOPs in the same town can hire in different ways, so read each listing.

How do you apply to IHOP?

  • Search openings near you. IHOP's 2021 announcement pointed applicants to www.ihop.com/careers to explore jobs in their area.
  • Apply through the listing. The franchise postings we checked link to an online application.
  • Watch for hiring events. IHOP held a National Recruiting Day on 19 May 2021 with in-person interviews. It hasn't announced a regular event since that we could find.

Read the requirements carefully. A host posting we checked needs "No prior experience or training required"; a cook posting asks for six months to a year of related experience or training, and says employees must be at least 18 to operate kitchen equipment.

What does IHOP look for?

IHOP's president described the brand's service as "IHOSPITALITY" in 2021 and welcomed applicants "excited at the prospect of offering 'service with a smile'". One IHOP host posting (Herndon, VA) says the one constant ingredient at IHOP is a smile, and tells team members: "Be the pancake you wish to see in the world!"

The postings we checked ask for:

  • Fast, friendly guest service. The host posting asks you to greet guests within 30 seconds and seat them as soon as a table is free.
  • Teamwork and communication. "Must showcase teamwork and communication skills."
  • Handling money responsibly, including cash drops and register readings for hosts.
  • Flexibility. "Must be flexible and ready to work in shifts."
  • Following standards. Cooks prepare food "according to specifications set forth in the IHOP SOP manuals" and learn IHOP's galley terminology.
  • Basic maths and English to read guest checks and instructions.

What is the IHOP interview like?

IHOP doesn't publish an interview format, length or number of rounds, and the postings we checked don't describe one. When the restaurant contacts you, ask who you'll meet, how long to allow and whether there's a second conversation or a working interview.

Does IHOP have an assessment?

IHOP doesn't publish a pre-hire test for restaurant roles, and the postings we checked don't mention one. If a restaurant asks you to complete one, it should tell you what it involves. If it shows you work scenarios and asks what you'd do, our guide to situational judgement tests explains that format.

IHOP interview questions and how to answer them

IHOP doesn't publish a question list, and each restaurant chooses its own. These are questions to prepare for, chosen to match what IHOP's postings ask for: guest service, teamwork, cash handling and flexibility. Use the STAR structure (situation, task, action, result) for "tell me about a time" questions. Our STAR method guide shows how.

1. Why do you want to work at IHOP?

Be honest and specific. Mention something you like about IHOP as a guest, then what you want from the job: working with a team, learning the kitchen or the floor, or the paid training the postings mention.

2. Tell me about yourself.

Keep it short: school or work, one strength, and why a busy restaurant suits you. If this is your first job, sport, volunteering and family responsibilities all count.

3. How would you greet and seat guests when the restaurant is full?

The host posting asks you to greet guests within 30 seconds and to keep a waiting list when needed. Describe welcoming people straight away, giving an honest wait time and keeping them updated.

4. How would you handle a guest who is unhappy with their food?

Walk through it in order: listen, apologise, put it right quickly and check they're happy. Say you'd involve a manager when you can't fix it yourself. The host posting says hosts may handle guest complaints and invite guests to return.

5. What does "service with a smile" mean to you?

IHOP's president used that phrase when IHOP was recruiting. Give a concrete example of friendly service you gave or received, and what made it stand out.

6. Tell me about a time you worked as part of a team.

The postings ask for teamwork and communication. Describe what you contributed, how you helped someone else and what the team got done.

7. Have you handled cash before?

Hosts at IHOP take payments, run register readings and make cash drops. Talk about counting carefully, following procedures and owning up to a mistake if one happens. If you haven't handled cash, say how you'd learn it.

8. How do you handle a rush?

Explain how you stay organised during a breakfast or weekend rush: prioritise, keep moving and tell the team when you need help. The Herndon posting asks you to multitask and act quickly.

9. What is your availability?

The postings ask for people who are flexible and ready to work shifts. Give availability you can keep, including weekends if you can, and an example of being reliable.

10. How would you suggest an extra item to a guest?

One host posting lists upselling when appropriate. Show you'd recommend something that suits the guest, such as a side or a drink, without pressuring them.

11. (Cooks) How do you make sure every plate comes out right?

Cooks follow IHOP's SOP manuals and plating standards. Talk about reading tickets carefully, following recipes exactly and keeping your station clean and safe.

12. Where would you like to be in a year or two?

One IHOP host posting lists advancement opportunities and an apprentice programme. If you'd like to move into a shift lead or management role, say so, and ask what that path looks like at this restaurant.

How to prepare for an IHOP interview

  1. Read the listing for your restaurant. Experience and age rules vary by role and by franchisee.
  2. Learn the basics of the role. Hosts greet, seat, take To Go orders and handle cash; cooks follow IHOP's SOPs.
  3. Prepare four or five STAR stories covering guest service, teamwork, a rush and reliability. Practise them out loud, ideally in a mock interview.
  4. Know your availability before the interview and stick to it.
  5. Ask who the employer is if the listing doesn't say: IHOP or a franchise company.
  6. Bring two or three questions about training, shifts and how people move up.

Practising realistic work tasks

Interviews reward prepared stories. Some employers also use work-style tasks, and judgement in those improves with practice. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. It isn't affiliated with IHOP and doesn't use IHOP's questions.
