Humana Hiring Process 2026: Steps, Interview, Questions

The short answer

Humana hires in four stages: explore roles, apply online, interview, and accept an offer. Interviews may be by phone, by video or in person, and some clinical roles add an online assessment. An offer depends on a background check and a pre-employment drug screen. Humana doesn’t publish how long the process takes.

  • Apply only through careers.humana.com or centerwellcareers.com. Humana doesn’t accept resumes by email.
  • You can’t change an application once it’s submitted.
  • Humana’s values are Caring, Curious and Committed.
  • Humana never runs hiring through WhatsApp, Telegram or Facebook Messenger.

Humana's hiring process has four stages: explore, apply, interview and offer. Humana's how we hire page says interviews may include phone calls, video interviews and in-person discussions, and that some clinical roles add an online assessment. An offer depends on a background check and a pre-employment drug screen.

Everything below comes from Humana's own careers pages, linked as we go. Where Humana doesn't say something, we say so.

What is the hiring process at Humana?

You find a role, apply online, interview with the recruiter and hiring team, and receive an offer if you're selected. Humana's how we hire page names those stages as Explore, Apply, Interview and Offer. It doesn't publish how many interview rounds there are or how long the process takes, and both vary by role.

How do you apply to Humana?

Apply online through Humana's careers site. Points from Humana's FAQs:

  • No emailed resumes. Humana says it doesn't accept resumes by email.
  • You can't edit after submitting. Check your application before you send it.
  • You'll get a confirmation email, with a link to your candidate home account, where you can check your status.
  • Recruiters review every application, according to Humana.
  • Referrals go through Humana's internal referral system, which emails you a link to apply.
  • Accommodations: if you need support applying because of a disability, Humana asks you to email yourcareer@humana.com.

Read the posting closely. Humana tells candidates to read job descriptions thoroughly so they understand the responsibilities and requirements. Prepare an example for each listed requirement.

What is the Humana interview process?

Humana says the interview process "may include phone calls, video interviews, and in-person discussions." It doesn't publish a set order, length or number of rounds. When the recruiter contacts you, ask which formats to expect, who you'll meet and how long to allow.

Humana's own interview advice is short:

  • Be prepared to discuss your work experience and skills related to the position.
  • Read the job description thoroughly so you understand the responsibilities and requirements.
  • Ask questions about the role and the company, to check it fits your career goals.

If one of your interviews is a recorded video with no interviewer present, our guide to one-way video interviews explains how that format works.

Does Humana have an assessment?

For some clinical roles, yes. Humana says you may need to complete an online assessment or visit a specific location. It doesn't publish what the assessment contains, how long it takes or how it's scored, so treat specific details you read elsewhere as unconfirmed.

If an assessment shows you workplace scenarios and asks what you'd do, it's a situational judgement format. Our guide to situational judgement tests explains how that format works in general.

What happens after the Humana interview?

Humana says it strives to give feedback promptly, and you can contact your recruiter with questions. If you're selected:

  1. Your recruiter makes a verbal offer, followed by a written employment offer.
  2. The offer depends on a background check and a pre-employment drug screen.
  3. You may be asked for your Social Security number if it isn't already on file. Humana says the instructions come from Humana@myworkday.com.
  4. You get a welcome call or email to start onboarding, and an email about your first day a week before your start date.

How do you spot a fake Humana job offer?

Humana's fraud prevention page says it never communicates about hiring through Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp or Telegram, and that an offer made without an interview is likely a scam. Its official career sites are careers.humana.com and centerwellcareers.com. If you're unsure about a message, Humana asks you to email yourcareer@humana.com before you share any personal information.

What does Humana look for?

Humana's values are:

  • Caring. "Caring is everything. It's who we are, it's how we work, it's the business we're in."
  • Curious. Humana describes associates as "always Curious to learn how to better serve our members and patients."
  • Committed. "With conviction to our purpose, we are Committed to differentiate and sustain our business for the future."

Humana describes itself as "focused on helping people achieve their best health by making healthcare simple and affordable." Each posting lists its own requirements, so read yours closely.

Humana interview questions and how to answer them

Humana doesn't publish a question list, and questions vary by role. These are questions to prepare for, chosen to match Humana's three values and its interview advice. Use the STAR structure (situation, task, action, result) for "tell me about a time" questions; our STAR method guide shows how.

1. Why do you want to work at Humana?

Connect your answer to Humana's stated focus on helping people achieve their best health. Mention the part of Humana you're applying to, such as CenterWell primary care, home health or a corporate team, and say what draws you to that work.

2. Tell me about yourself.

Keep it to your last role or studies, the skills the posting asks for, and why healthcare. Humana's advice is to be ready to discuss experience and skills related to the position, so pick the parts that match.

3. Tell me about a time you went out of your way to care for a customer or patient.

This is the Caring value. Choose a real example, say what the person needed, what you did beyond the minimum, and how it turned out.

4. Describe a time you learned something new to do your job better.

This matches Curious. Pick a system, process or skill you taught yourself, and show how it improved your work for the people you served.

5. Tell me about a commitment you kept when it was hard to.

This matches Committed. Talk about seeing something through, such as a deadline, a shift or a promise to a customer, and what it took.

6. How do you protect confidential information?

Healthcare roles handle personal and health data. Describe the habits you follow: sharing only what someone needs, locking screens, checking identity before giving out details.

7. How would you handle an upset member or patient on the phone?

Walk through it: listen without interrupting, acknowledge the problem, explain what you can do, and follow up. Be specific about your tone and wording.

8. Tell me about a time you had to be very accurate.

Describe a task where a mistake would have mattered and the checks you used to avoid one.

9. How do you manage several tasks at once?

Explain how you prioritise, what tools you use, and how you keep accuracy when things are busy.

10. Tell me about a time you received difficult feedback.

This also fits the Curious value. Describe the feedback, how you reacted, what you changed and the result.

11. Describe a time you worked with a team to solve a problem.

Say what the problem was, what you contributed and how you supported others. Show you shared credit.

12. What questions do you have for us?

Humana encourages candidates to ask about the role and the company. Ask about training, how success is measured in the first months and how the team works with members or patients.

Our list of behavioural interview questions gives you more to practise on.

How to prepare for Humana's hiring process

  1. Read the posting line by line. Note each requirement and prepare one example for it.
  2. Check your application before submitting. You can't change it afterwards.
  3. Learn the three values and have a story ready for each of Caring, Curious and Committed.
  4. Prepare for phone, video and in-person formats. For video, test your camera and sound, and find a quiet room.
  5. Practise out loud, ideally in a mock interview with someone who will give honest feedback.
  6. Prepare questions about the team, training and what a good first few months look like.
  7. Expect the checks. Have your documents ready for the background check and drug screen once you receive an offer.

Practising realistic work tasks

Interviews reward prepared stories. Assessments and work-sample tasks reward judgement, and that improves with practice on realistic work. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. It isn't affiliated with Humana and doesn't use Humana's questions or assessments.
