Dairy Queen Interview Questions and Hiring Process (2026)

The short answer

You apply online to a specific Dairy Queen restaurant and, if you’re selected, get an offer from that restaurant’s owner. The postings don’t describe the interview; expect to meet someone from the restaurant’s management. DQ restaurants are run by franchisees, independent business owners who make all hiring decisions, so the interview format and timeline vary. Prepare for questions on friendly service, speed, food safety, teamwork and your availability.

  • The postings we checked say the franchisee will be your employer, not International Dairy Queen.
  • Team Member postings list three areas: Hospitality (front counter), Chill (treats) and Grill (food).
  • No experience is needed for Team Member roles; shift supervisors need restaurant experience.
  • Neither Dairy Queen nor the postings publish interview questions, a timeline or a minimum age.

Dairy Queen's hiring process is simple: find a posting for the restaurant you want, apply online, interview and get an offer if you're selected. The postings we checked don't describe the interview stage. Who runs that process matters. The DQ postings we checked say you are applying to "a franchisee of the Dairy Queen® system" and that the franchisee "will make all hiring, wage, hour, and other employment-related decisions".

Everything below about the process comes from Dairy Queen franchisee job postings, checked in October 2026 and named in the sources. Where they don't say something, we say so rather than guess. The interview questions further down are ones to prepare for, built from what those postings say the job needs.

What is the Dairy Queen hiring process?

You apply online for a role at one restaurant and receive an offer if you're selected. The postings don't describe the interview, so expect to meet someone from the restaurant's management. Dairy Queen doesn't publish a standard process beyond that, because each franchisee runs its own hiring. When someone contacts you, ask what the next steps are and how long they usually take.

The postings we checked cover Team Member, Shift Supervisor and Assistant Manager. The Assistant Manager posting says the role reports to a General Manager.

Who will employ you at Dairy Queen?

The franchisee who owns the restaurant. The postings we checked carry the same notice: you are not applying to American Dairy Queen Corporation or International Dairy Queen, Inc., "Franchisees are independent business owners", and the franchisee "will be your employer if you are hired".

This affects your interview. One owner can run hiring differently from another a few miles away, so what a friend went through at another DQ may not apply to you.

How do you apply for a job at Dairy Queen?

Find the posting for the restaurant you want and apply online. The postings we checked were on Workstream, a hiring app the restaurant uses; its app lets you reuse your profile, apply to more than one job and track updates on your application. Other franchisees may use other systems.

Read the posting before you apply. The Team Member posting we checked describes three positions:

  • Hospitality: greeting customers, taking orders, taking payments and handing out orders.
  • Chill: making DQ's treats to standard, including the soft serve curl.
  • Grill: preparing food across the kitchen positions.

It says "no former experience is required" for any of them.

What is the Dairy Queen interview like?

Neither Dairy Queen nor the postings describe an interview format, and it varies by franchisee. Expect to meet a manager from the restaurant. The person who invites you can tell you who you'll meet and how long to allow.

The postings show what managers are looking for. The Team Member posting says the restaurant wants "positive, energetic employees" who will "create positive memories" for customers, whom the posting calls fans. The Shift Supervisor posting asks for "good manners, personal hygiene, and promptness".

Does Dairy Queen have an assessment test?

None of the postings we checked mentions a pre-employment test. Franchisees run their own hiring, so if a test is part of your application, the restaurant will tell you. Treat claims elsewhere about a standard Dairy Queen test as unconfirmed.

What happens after the Dairy Queen interview?

Dairy Queen doesn't publish a timeline. If you're selected, the franchisee offers you the job, and from then on all questions about pay, hours and paperwork go to that franchisee. If you applied through Workstream, you can track updates in the app.

If you haven't heard back, call the restaurant or contact the manager who interviewed you. A short, polite follow-up a few days after the interview is reasonable.

Dairy Queen interview questions to prepare for

Dairy Queen doesn't publish its interview questions. These are the questions to prepare for, based on the duties and qualities DQ franchisee postings describe. For "tell me about a time" questions, structure your answer with the STAR method (situation, task, action, result).

1. Why do you want to work at Dairy Queen?

Give a reason tied to the job. The Team Member posting talks about creating "positive memories" for fans, and lists career growth opportunities and giving back to the community among its perks. Say which of those draws you, or what you like about DQ as a customer.

2. Which position interests you: Hospitality, Chill or Grill?

Team Member postings split the job into the front counter, treats and the kitchen. Say which you'd prefer and why, then add that you're happy to learn the others. The posting we checked lists positional cross training as a perk.

3. Tell me about a time you gave great customer service.

The Hospitality role is to "enthusiastically greet and welcome customers and strive to exceed customer expectations". Use a real example from a job, school or volunteering where you were friendly and quick, and say how the customer reacted.

4. What would you do if a customer said their order was wrong?

The Shift Supervisor posting says concerns are resolved calmly using Dairy Queen's service recovery standards. Say you would apologise, check the order, fix it quickly and bring in the shift supervisor if the customer was still unhappy.

5. How do you stay accurate when it's busy?

The Grill position is described as preparing "great food quickly for hundreds of customers daily". Explain what you do when it's busy: focus on one order at a time, check tickets, keep your station stocked before the rush.

6. Why does food safety matter?

Supervisor and manager postings ask for knowledge of safe food handling and the ability to become ServSafe certified. Even for a Team Member role, talk about washing hands, keeping surfaces clean, watching temperatures and following procedures every time.

7. What is your availability?

The postings we checked asked about weekends, holidays, day shifts and night shifts. Answer honestly and specifically. A clear answer helps the manager more than an open-ended "any time" you can't keep.

8. Tell me about working as part of a team.

Choose an example where you helped a teammate, covered a gap or shared work fairly. Supervisors are asked to keep the crew moving and fix bottlenecks, so show that you take direction well and help without being asked.

9. Tell me about a time you learned something new quickly.

No experience is required for Team Member roles, so managers want to know you can learn. Pick an example where you picked up a new task or routine fast and say how: asking questions, practising, watching someone experienced.

10. Are you comfortable with the physical side of the job?

The postings we checked list standing for the entire shift and lifting up to 50 pounds, and the Assistant Manager posting adds moving between temperature zones. Read the requirements on your own posting and answer honestly.

11. For shift supervisor and manager roles: tell me about a time you coached someone.

The Shift Supervisor posting asks you to help train and coach crew members. The Assistant Manager posting adds inventory and cash controls and helping the General Manager hire and train. Prepare a STAR story about developing someone and one about keeping a shift on track when you were short of staff.

12. Do you have any questions for us?

Have two ready. Good options: how training works for new team members, how shifts are scheduled, and what the best people on this team do well.

How to prepare for a Dairy Queen interview

  1. Read the posting closely, including the franchisee notice, the positions and the physical requirements.
  2. Prepare three or four STAR stories covering customer service, teamwork, a busy period and learning quickly.
  3. Know your availability before you walk in, including weekends and holidays.
  4. Know the menu basics. Being able to talk about the food and treats you'd be serving shows interest.
  5. Practise your answers out loud, ideally in a mock interview.
  6. Arrive a few minutes early, clean and tidy. Promptness and personal hygiene are named in the supervisor posting.

Practising realistic work tasks

Interviews reward prepared stories. Restaurant work rewards judgement under time pressure, and that improves with practice on realistic tasks.
