CVS Interview Questions and Hiring Process 2026

The short answer

CVS doesn’t publish its interview questions, so prepare for questions on customer care, accuracy, reliability and your availability, which is what its store and pharmacy postings centre on. The CVS hiring process has five steps: search, apply, review (with a Virtual Job Tryout for some roles), a phone or video interview arranged by a recruiter, and an offer you accept in your Candidate Home account.

  • Many high-volume roles include a Virtual Job Tryout, launched from Candidate Home after you apply.
  • CVS sends offers only through Candidate Home in its Workday portal, never directly in a chat or email.
  • The store associate and pharmacy technician postings we checked set a minimum age of 16, with state pharmacy rules first for technicians.
  • CVS says it considers applicants with arrest or conviction records in line with the law.

Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs free practice job simulations with a scored report on where you lost marks. Cohesyve isn’t affiliated with CVS Health and doesn’t use CVS’s assessments or questions.

CVS Health doesn't publish its interview questions, but it does publish what each job involves and how it hires. Its careers site sets out five steps, and its job postings spell out what store and pharmacy staff do every day. The practice questions below are built from those, with how to answer each one for CVS.

Everything about the process comes from CVS Health's careers site and two live job postings, linked or named as we go. Where CVS doesn't say something, we say so.

How do you apply to CVS?

You apply online through CVS Health's careers site, which runs on Workday. You'll create a candidate profile, and you can track every application under "My Applications" in the candidate portal. Current CVS colleagues apply through ColleagueZone instead.

Two things on CVS's hiring page are worth knowing before you apply:

  • Experience can stand in for education. CVS says some education requirements can be substituted with experience on a one-to-one basis, though some degrees and certifications are still required.
  • Feedback is unlikely. CVS says that because of the volume of applicants, its recruiters can't give individual feedback to each candidate.

The in-store careers page describes the main store routes: retail store associate, pharmacy technician (through the LearnRX Technician Training Program, with no previous experience required), a 12-week Shift Supervisor Management Trainee programme, and Store Manager in Training.

What is the CVS Virtual Job Tryout?

The Virtual Job Tryout is a step in CVS's interview process for many high-volume roles, which you complete online from Candidate Home in Workday. CVS says it evaluates you on your experience, job-related skills and interview performance, and that you launch it from a task on your Candidate Home page after you apply.

CVS doesn't publish what the tryout contains, how long it takes or how it's scored. If it shows you workplace scenarios and asks what you'd do, it's a situational judgement format; our guide to situational judgement tests explains how that works. If it asks you to record answers to questions on video, our guide to one-way video interviews covers the format. Either way:

  • Do it soon after applying, in one quiet sitting.
  • Answer as you'd actually work. CVS publishes no answer key.
  • Use the help ticket link on CVS's hiring page if the tryout won't load.

What is the CVS interview process?

If you're selected, a recruiter contacts you about next steps, which CVS says may be a phone call or a video interview. CVS doesn't publish how many interviews there are or who conducts them; ask the recruiter who you'll meet and how long to allow.

CVS also points candidates to free resume tips, interview practice tools, workshops and guides through its career partner Intoo, and to hiring events where you can meet a recruiter in person. If you need an accommodation at any stage, CVS asks you to email ColleagueRelations@CVSHealth.com or call 888-694-7287.

How do CVS job offers work?

CVS emails you to say an offer is waiting, and you review and accept it in Candidate Home in its Workday portal. CVS is explicit that job offers won't come in a chat or directly in an email.

Use that rule to spot scams. CVS says it never asks you to buy your own equipment or pay to apply, and you'll never get CVS job emails from services such as Yahoo or Gmail.

What happens after you accept a CVS offer?

Onboarding includes Form I-9. CVS says you complete Section 1 in your Certiphi account, then join a virtual queue to complete Section 2 with a third-party agent by video call. CVS also lists a Background Support Team phone line for problems with your background check. Once your paperwork is done, contact your recruiter or hiring manager for next steps.

CVS doesn't publish its drug testing rules. The postings we checked say CVS considers qualified applicants with arrest or conviction records in line with federal, state and local laws.

CVS interview questions to practise

These are practice questions based on what CVS's store associate and pharmacy technician postings ask for, and on the values in its postings: colleagues who "care deeply, innovate with purpose, hold ourselves accountable and prioritize safety and quality". Answer behavioural questions with the STAR method: the situation, your task, what you did and the result.

  1. "Why do you want to work at CVS?" CVS describes itself as building "a world of health around every individual". Connect your answer to helping customers with their health, not just retail, and mention something specific about the role, such as the pharmacy technician training route.
  2. "Tell me about a time you helped a customer who was upset." The store associate posting asks for "compassion and care in all interactions" and resolving service issues. Show how you listened, fixed what you could and followed up.
  3. "How would you greet and help a customer who looks lost?" The posting describes a warm greeting, eye contact and offering help to find items. Describe exactly that, then offering anything else they might need.
  4. "What's your availability?" Both postings we checked ask for regular, predictable attendance, and the technician role lists nights and weekends. Be accurate; promising hours you can't work causes problems later.
  5. "Tell me about a time you handled cash or a task that had to be exact." Store associates handle cash, cheques and card payments "with precision". Give an example of how you check your own work.
  6. "A prescription label doesn't match what the patient expected. What do you do?" The technician posting lists confirming prescription and label accuracy for patient safety. Say you'd stop, check, and bring it to the pharmacist; you don't guess.
  7. "How many tablets would you dispense for 2 tablets a day for 30 days?" The technician posting gives day's supply and tablet counts as an example of the maths you'll use. Answer (60), and explain how you'd double-check.
  8. "Tell me about a time you had to switch quickly between tasks." The technician posting asks you to "pivot quickly from one task to another". Show how you prioritised and didn't let accuracy slip.
  9. "How do you protect customer privacy?" Pharmacy staff handle patient information, and the technician posting stresses protecting patient privacy and security. Talk about not discussing details where others can hear and following procedure.
  10. "Tell me about a time you got feedback and changed how you worked." The technician posting asks for a growth mindset and being receptive to feedback. Pick a real example with a clear change.
  11. "A colleague isn't following a store procedure. What do you do?" Accountability and safety. Raise it with them respectfully, and with your manager if it affects customers or safety.
  12. "Would you be open to working at other stores?" The technician posting asks for willingness to work across the market. Say honestly how far you can travel.

How to prepare for a CVS interview

  1. Read the full job posting and note the duties and essential functions; CVS's postings are detailed.
  2. Prepare four or five STAR stories on customer care, accuracy, teamwork and learning.
  3. For pharmacy roles, check your state's technician registration rules, which the posting links to, and brush up on basic dosage arithmetic.
  4. Know your availability and make sure it matches your application.
  5. Test your setup before a video interview: camera, sound and a quiet room.
  6. Use the free Intoo practice tools CVS offers, or run a mock interview with a friend.
  7. Prepare two or three questions about training, schedules and growth into roles such as pharmacy technician or shift supervisor.

Practising realistic work tasks

Interviews reward prepared stories; assessments such as the Virtual Job Tryout reward judgement on realistic tasks. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs free practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. It isn't affiliated with CVS Health and doesn't use CVS's assessments or questions.

FAQs

How long does the CVS hiring process take?

CVS doesn't publish a timeline. Check your status under "My Applications" in the candidate portal.

How old do you have to be to work at CVS?

The store associate posting we checked requires you to be at least 16. For pharmacy technicians, your state board of pharmacy's rules apply first; if it sets no minimum, CVS requires 16.

Do you need experience to be a CVS pharmacy technician?

No. CVS says its LearnRX Technician Training Program needs no previous experience. Technicians must complete CVS's training and meet their state's licensing and certification rules.

Does CVS hire people with a criminal record?

CVS's postings say it considers qualified applicants with arrest or conviction records in line with federal, state and local laws.

Will CVS tell me why I wasn't selected?

Usually not. CVS says that because of the volume of applicants, its recruiters can't give individual feedback to each candidate.

How do I know a CVS job offer is real?

Real offers appear in your Candidate Home account on CVS's Workday portal. CVS never asks you to pay to apply or buy equipment, and doesn't email from Yahoo or Gmail addresses.
