Cleveland Clinic's hiring process has four steps, which it sets out on every job posting: apply, screening, interview and hire. The screening and interview can be live or recorded: Cleveland Clinic says you may answer prescreening questions in a pre-recorded video interview, and your interview may be in person or an on-demand, recorded one. After you accept an offer, you complete Occupational Health appointments and a background check before you start.
Everything below about Cleveland Clinic's process comes from its own careers site and job postings, linked as we go. Where Cleveland Clinic doesn't say something, we say so rather than guess. The interview questions further down are ones to prepare for, built from its stated values and its own job descriptions.

What is the Cleveland Clinic hiring process?
You apply online, a caregiver screens your application, you interview, and you receive a formal offer letter if you're hired. Cleveland Clinic publishes these four steps in the "Application Process" section of its job postings on jobs.clevelandclinic.org. Cleveland Clinic calls all its employees "caregivers", whatever their role, so expect to hear the word in interviews.

How do you apply for a job at Cleveland Clinic?
Search open roles on jobs.clevelandclinic.org and apply for the specific job. The application runs through Cleveland Clinic's Workday portal, where you can also check your application status.
- Apply with a resume. Cleveland Clinic says it highly recommends one, so it can understand your education, work and volunteer experience.
- Expect a few HR policy questions when you apply. Some positions add prescreening questions about your years of experience and the job's minimum qualifications, so check the minimum qualifications on the posting before you start.
- Look for hiring events. For some teams, Cleveland Clinic runs interview events, such as its New Grad RN hiring events. At its Neurological Institute hiring events, you register by applying through the event's job posting, a recruiter follows up, and before the event you receive your interview schedule, arrival time, parking and check-in details.
- New nurses have a route in. Cleveland Clinic's New Grad RN Resident roles include a one-year accredited Nurse Residency program with nine tailored tracks.
- Ask for help if you need it. For an accommodation during the application or recruitment process, Cleveland Clinic asks you to call 216.448.CCHR (2247) or email HRServiceCenter@ccf.org.
What happens in the Cleveland Clinic screening?
A caregiver reviews your application and tells you the next steps by email, text message or phone call. Cleveland Clinic says you can expect to answer some prescreening questions, either with a recruiter or in a pre-recorded video interview. It doesn't publish the questions or how long the recording takes.
If you're asked to record answers, it's a one-way video interview: you see a question and record your answer with nobody on the other end. Our guide to one-way video interviews explains how they work and how to prepare. Test your camera and microphone first, find a quiet room, and practise answering to a camera.
What is the Cleveland Clinic interview process like?
If you're qualified, you'll get a text or email with next steps. Cleveland Clinic says these may be a live, in-person interview or an on-demand, recorded interview. During the process, your recruiter shares when you can expect feedback.
Cleveland Clinic doesn't publish how many rounds there are, who sits on the panel or how long interviews last. These vary by role and hospital, and accounts on review sites are anecdotal. When your recruiter contacts you, ask who you'll meet and how long to allow. At hiring events, Cleveland Clinic says selected candidates may interview with a hiring leader from a participating team.
What you can prepare for is what Cleveland Clinic says it values. Its mission, vision and values page lists three values and four care priorities:
| Values | Care priorities |
|---|---|
| Serve with heart: care for patients and each other with compassion and purpose | Care for the patient as if they were your own family |
| Succeed as one team: achieve excellence together | Treat fellow caregivers as if they were your own family |
| Shape the future: advance care through courage and innovation | Commit to the communities Cleveland Clinic serves |
| Treat the organisation as your home |
Its job postings add the practical side. A new graduate RN posting asks you to set priorities for patient care, respond to risks to a patient's health, and seek help when you can't do something safely on your own. A patient service specialist posting asks for a "Patients First" experience and for resolving patient issues "using the established HEART model".
What happens after you're hired at Cleveland Clinic?
If you're hired and accept, you receive a formal offer letter, and your recruiter reviews your HR and Occupational Health appointments, a background check run by Certiphi, and orientation details. Cleveland Clinic's onboarding page for nursing support hires gives more detail:
- Accept your offer in Workday. A welcome email with your Occupational Health dates and times should arrive within two to three business days.
- Authorise your background check when Certiphi emails you.
- Complete your health assessment surveys on a laptop or desktop rather than a phone.
- Bring your I-9 documents to your onboarding appointment. They're due no later than three days after your first day, and copies or expired documents aren't accepted.
- Fingerprinting applies only to some roles; your recruiter will tell you.
- Wait for clearance. Once you're cleared, you're notified by the Friday before your start date, with a link to the virtual new caregiver orientation.
Cleveland Clinic's postings describe it as a smoke-free, drug-free environment. Its careers pages don't say what Occupational Health screening includes, so ask your recruiter if you have questions about pre-employment requirements.
How long does Cleveland Clinic take to hire?
Cleveland Clinic doesn't publish an end-to-end timeline. It says your recruiter will tell you during the interview process when to expect feedback. For nursing support hires, Cleveland Clinic says the welcome email with Occupational Health dates should arrive within two to three business days of accepting, and cleared hires are notified by the Friday before their start date.
Cleveland Clinic interview questions to prepare for
Cleveland Clinic doesn't publish its interview questions. These are the questions to prepare for, based on its values, its care priorities and the duties in its own job postings. For "tell me about a time" questions, use the STAR method (situation, task, action, result).
1. Why do you want to work at Cleveland Clinic?
Go beyond its reputation. Connect your answer to one of its values, such as Serve with heart, and to something specific about the role or hospital, such as the Nurse Residency program if you're a new nurse. Say what you want to learn there.
2. Tell me about a time you cared for a patient as if they were your own family.
This is Cleveland Clinic's first care priority. Choose a time you noticed what a patient (or, in a non-clinical job, a customer or visitor) needed beyond the routine, acted on it and checked the result.
3. Tell me about a time a patient or visitor was upset with you.
Cleveland Clinic's patient experience team teaches a model called Communicate with H.E.A.R.T.: Hear, Empathize, Apologize, Respond, Thank. Its patient service postings name the model, so structure your answer the same way: you listened to the whole story, showed you understood, apologised for their experience, did what you realistically could and followed up.
4. Tell me about a time you worked with people from other disciplines.
This tests Succeed as one team. Choose an example with nurses, doctors, technicians or administrators where you shared information clearly, and say what the patient or team gained.
5. How do you prioritise when several patients need you at once?
Cleveland Clinic's new graduate RN posting asks nurses to set and revise priorities by acuity of need, patient preference and the resources available. Walk through how you'd decide, how you'd tell the patients who had to wait, and when you'd ask a colleague for help.
6. Tell me about a time you asked for help because you weren't sure you could do something safely.
The same posting asks nurses to seek supervision and assistance when they can't perform safely on their own. Interviewers want to hear that you recognise your limits. Choose a real example and explain what you learned.
7. Tell me about a time you suggested a better way of doing something.
This tests Shape the future. Choose a small, concrete improvement you made to a process, a handover or a workflow, and say what changed as a result.
8. How do you protect patients' confidential information?
Expect this for front desk, scheduling and clinical roles alike. Cleveland Clinic's patient service postings include entering and maintaining confidential patient information. Give a practical example, such as checking identity before sharing details or keeping a screen out of view.
9. Tell me about a time you learned something new quickly.
Cleveland Clinic describes a culture of constant learning, from residency programs to training and mentorship. Choose an example of learning a new system, procedure or skill, and how you checked you'd got it right.
10. How do you handle stress and irregular hours?
Many Cleveland Clinic clinical postings list working under stressful conditions and irregular hours, including weekends and holidays. Be honest about your availability, and give an example of staying calm and careful on a hard shift.
11. What questions do you have for us?
Ask about the unit or team, how new caregivers are supported in their first months, and what success looks like in the role. For new nurses, ask about the residency track for that unit.
How to prepare for Cleveland Clinic's hiring process
- Read the posting's minimum and preferred qualifications and have your licences, certifications and dates ready for the prescreening questions.
- Apply with an up-to-date resume that includes volunteer experience.
- Practise answering to a camera in case you're asked for a pre-recorded or on-demand interview.
- Learn the three values and four care priorities, and prepare one story for each value.
- Prepare four or five STAR stories covering a patient you put first, an upset patient or visitor, teamwork, prioritising, and asking for help. Our list of behavioural interview questions gives you more to practise on, and a mock interview helps you hear how you come across.
- Check your email, texts and spam folder while you wait; Cleveland Clinic contacts candidates by email, text or phone.
Practising realistic work tasks
Interviews reward prepared stories. Patient-facing work rewards judgement under pressure, and that improves with practice on realistic tasks. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs free practice job simulations for job seekers, with a report on where you lost marks. It isn't affiliated with Cleveland Clinic and doesn't use Cleveland Clinic's questions or tests.
