Chipotle hires restaurant staff in four steps: an application (online or by text), a chat with its virtual assistant Ava Cado, an interview with a hiring manager, and an offer, followed by possible reference and criminal history checks. The interview questions focus on what Chipotle's own job postings ask for: a friendly attitude, care for customers and teammates, and a willingness to learn to cook.
Everything below comes from Chipotle's careers site, its job postings, its applicant privacy notice and its own announcements, linked as we go. Chipotle doesn't publish its interview questions, so the questions further down are the topics its postings and values point to, with how to answer each one.
The Chipotle hiring process at a glance

What is the Chipotle hiring process?
You apply for a restaurant role, Ava Cado helps you complete the application and schedules an interview, a manager interviews you, and Ava Cado sends an offer if the manager picks you. Chipotle's February 2025 announcement describes Ava Cado as an "AI-powered virtual team member" that schedules interviews for hiring managers and sends offers to the candidates they select.
How to apply
- Online. Search by keyword and location on jobs.chipotle.com. Restaurant roles include Crew Member, Kitchen Leader, Service Leader, Assistant General Manager and General Manager. Corporate and facilities roles sit under the Support Center.
- By text. Chipotle's careers site says to text CHIPJOBS to 21414 to apply.
- Job alerts. You can join Chipotle's Talent Community to get alerts for new jobs.
The Crew Member posting asks that you are at least 16 and can communicate in the primary language or languages of the restaurant's location. Chipotle's careers site doesn't list any other entry requirement for crew roles.
Ava Cado, the hiring assistant
Ava Cado is a chat assistant built with the recruiting software company Paradox. According to CNBC's July 2025 report, it answers questions about the company and the job, helps applicants fill in the application, and can chat in English, Spanish, French and German. CNBC reported that Ava Cado "does not make employment decisions": managers interview candidates and decide who to hire.

What is the Chipotle interview process like?
Chipotle's interview is with a hiring manager, booked through Ava Cado into times the manager has made available. Chipotle doesn't publish how long the interview lasts, whether it's one-to-one or a group, or a set list of questions.
What Chipotle does publish is what it wants from new crew. The Crew Member posting lists three things under "What you'll bring to the table":
- "A friendly, enthusiastic attitude"
- "Passion for helping and serving others (both customers and team members)"
- "Desire to learn how to cook (a lot)"
The same posting says you'll be trained to work at any station: grill, cashier, prep, salsa and expo. Expect the interview to test those three qualities and your availability. For Kitchen Leader roles, the posting adds a high school diploma, restaurant experience and the ability to "understand and articulate Chipotle's Food With Integrity philosophy".
If you need an accommodation for the application or interview because of a disability, Chipotle's postings direct you to ADAaccommodations@chipotle.com.
Does Chipotle have an assessment?
Chipotle doesn't publish a named pre-hire test for restaurant roles. Its applicant privacy notice lists "assessments you complete" and "skills checks" among the information it may collect, so some roles may include one. It says nothing about the content, length or scoring.
If you're given scenarios and asked what you'd do, that's a situational judgement format; our guide to situational judgement tests explains how it works. Answer as you would actually behave on shift. Chipotle publishes no answer key.
How long does the Chipotle hiring process take?
In its February 2025 release, Chipotle said the average time from completing an application to starting the job had fallen to four days, from 12. In July 2025 its chief human resources officer told CNBC that the time from application to ready-to-hire was about three and a half days. These are company averages from 2025. Chipotle doesn't promise a timeline for any single application.
What happens after the Chipotle interview?
If the manager selects you, Ava Cado sends you the offer. Chipotle's applicant privacy notice says that it, or a background check company it directs, may check employment references and criminal history records "only if and to the extent permitted by applicable law". Chipotle doesn't publish what onboarding involves or how long it takes.
Common Chipotle interview questions and how to answer them
Chipotle doesn't publish its interview questions. The questions below follow what its postings ask for and its four published values, so they're the topics a Chipotle manager is likely to cover. Answer the "tell me about a time" ones in STAR form (situation, task, action, result); our STAR method guide shows how.
1. Why do you want to work at Chipotle?
Be specific. Chipotle's careers site says its purpose is "to cultivate a better world" and its postings talk about preparing "real food by hand every day". Say what draws you: cooking real food, the pace of the line, or the chance to move up. The Kitchen Leader posting says 80% of managers started as Crew.
2. What is your availability?
Give an honest, exact answer that matches your application. Saying yes to shifts you can't work causes problems later, and the manager is scheduling a whole team around you.
3. Tell me about a time you gave a customer great service.
Chipotle's first value is "The Line is the Moment of Truth": the customer watches their food being made. Pick a story where you were friendly and fast at the same time, and say what the customer got as a result.
4. How would you handle a customer who is unhappy with their order?
Chipotle's value "The Line is the Moment of Truth" means the customer is watching: show you'd listen, apologise, remake it on the line and keep it moving. If you have a real example, use it. If not, walk through what you would do step by step.
5. Have you worked in a kitchen or handled food before?
For Crew, experience isn't listed as a requirement, so a "no" is fine if you show the "desire to learn how to cook" the posting asks for. For Kitchen Leader, restaurant experience is required: talk about prep, food safety, cleaning and keeping stations stocked.
6. Tell me about a time you worked as part of a team under pressure.
The Crew posting asks for a passion for helping "both customers and team members". Choose a busy shift, a group project or a sports match, and describe what you did to help the people around you.
7. How do you learn a new task quickly?
Crew are trained across five stations. Describe how you learn: watching first, asking questions, practising, and checking your work. A short example of picking up something new fast makes the point.
8. What does food safety mean to you?
Kitchen Leaders are responsible for food safety and a clean, sanitised kitchen. Even for Crew, mention washing hands, keeping raw and cooked food apart, watching temperatures and following procedures exactly.
9. Tell me about a time you made a mistake at work or school.
Chipotle's values include "Authenticity Lives Here". Pick a real, small mistake, own it, and explain what you changed afterwards.
10. What does "Food With Integrity" mean to you?
The Kitchen Leader posting asks you to "understand and articulate" this philosophy. Read Chipotle's own description of its food and sourcing on chipotle.com before your interview, and explain it in your own words.
11. How would you train a new crew member? (Kitchen Leader and manager roles)
The Kitchen Leader posting includes "Developing Crew members to be future Kitchen Leaders". Describe showing, then watching them do it, then giving clear feedback. A real example of teaching someone is stronger than a description.
12. Do you have any questions for us?
Ask about training, how shifts are scheduled, and what the path to Kitchen Leader looks like at that restaurant.
For more practice, our list of behavioural interview questions has a bigger bank of "tell me about a time" questions.
How to prepare for a Chipotle interview
- Read the posting for your role. Crew and Kitchen Leader postings list different requirements.
- Write down your exact availability before you apply, and stick to it.
- Prepare three or four STAR stories covering customer service, teamwork, learning something new and a mistake you fixed.
- Read the four values on jobs.chipotle.com/values: The Line is the Moment of Truth, Teach and Taste Chipotle, Authenticity Lives Here, and The Movement Is Real.
- Keep an eye on your texts. Ava Cado handles scheduling and offers, so reply promptly.
- Practise out loud in a mock interview with someone who will give you honest feedback.
- Bring two or three questions about training and shifts.
Practising realistic work tasks
Interviews reward prepared stories. Assessments reward judgement, and that improves with practice on realistic tasks. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. It isn't affiliated with Chipotle and doesn't use Chipotle's assessments or questions.
