What is a job requisition?
A job requisition is an employer’s internal, approved request to fill a position, raised by the hiring manager and signed off by the people who control the budget before the job is advertised.

It records what the role is, why it is needed (a new position or a replacement), the level and pay band, the department, and who approved it. Most applicant-tracking systems give each requisition a number, which is the “Req ID” or “Job ID” that appears on postings.
Three documents are easy to confuse. The requisition approves the hire. The job description describes the work. The job posting advertises it to applicants. Time to fill is usually measured from the day the requisition opens.
Also called: req, hiring requisition, personnel requisition.
Example
A support manager raises a requisition for one more Tier 2 support engineer, citing a growing ticket backlog. Finance approves the pay band, HR assigns it REQ-0192, and the recruiter opens the posting the same week.
