Planet Fitness hiring happens club by club. Most clubs are franchisee-owned, and Planet Fitness's annual report says "Planet Fitness franchises are independently owned and operated businesses. As such, employees of our franchisees are not employees of the Company." So hiring is run by the club's operator. Planet Fitness doesn't publish an application process, interview format or timeline.
Everything below comes from Planet Fitness's investor disclosures, listed in the sources. Planet Fitness doesn't publish club job descriptions, an interview format or a timeline there, and we say so where it matters rather than guess. The interview questions further down are ones to prepare for, built from what Planet Fitness says about its clubs, its staff and the Judgement Free Zone.
The Planet Fitness hiring process at a glance
These are the usual stages of hiring at a club. Planet Fitness doesn't publish them.
| Stage | What happens | What Planet Fitness says |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Find a job | Find an opening at the club you want | Most clubs are franchisee-owned; a minority are corporate-owned |
| 2. Apply | Apply to that club's posting | No standard application process published |
| 3. Interview | Meet the club's managers | Format and length not published |
| 4. Offer | The club's operator offers you the role | At franchise clubs, the franchisee is your employer |
| 5. Training | Learn the club's standards | Planet Fitness offers its online training, PF University, to franchisees at no cost |
What is the Planet Fitness hiring process?
You apply for a role at one club, interview with its managers and receive an offer if you're selected. Planet Fitness doesn't publish a standard process beyond that, and at franchise clubs the franchisee runs hiring. When someone contacts you, ask what the next steps are and how long they usually take.
Planet Fitness also has corporate jobs at its head office, which it calls the Club Support Center. Those roles are with Planet Fitness itself.

Who will employ you at Planet Fitness?
At most clubs, a franchisee. Planet Fitness describes itself as a franchisor and operator of fitness centres, with most clubs owned by franchisees and the rest corporate-owned. Its annual report says franchisees' employees are not Planet Fitness employees.
This affects your interview. One franchisee can run hiring differently from another, so what a friend went through at another club may not apply to you. The job posting or the club can tell you who your employer would be.
How do you apply for a job at Planet Fitness?
Find the posting for the club you want and apply to it. Planet Fitness doesn't publish one application process for every club, because franchisees hire for their own clubs. If you can't find a posting, ask at the front desk of your local club who handles hiring.
What do Planet Fitness staff do?
Planet Fitness doesn't publish club job descriptions in its investor disclosures, but it describes what staff are there for:
- Welcoming members. Its mission is a "welcoming, non-intimidating environment, which we call the Judgement Free Zone", where progress is "supported and applauded by our staff and fellow members".
- Teaching. "Friendly staff trainers" offer "unlimited free fitness instruction to all our members in small groups", a programme called PE@PF.
- Keeping the club clean. Planet Fitness says a clean, sanitised environment is part of the club experience.
- Service standards. Corporate-owned club staff work to "key business metrics in the service, cleanliness, personnel and financial categories", and Planet Fitness uses mystery shoppers to review franchisee-owned clubs.
Read the posting for your role to see which of these it covers.
What is the Planet Fitness interview like?
Planet Fitness doesn't publish an interview format, and it varies by club operator. Expect to meet a manager from the club. The person who invites you can tell you who you'll meet and how long to allow.
What the company publishes points to what managers will listen for: whether you'll make every member feel they belong, whatever their fitness level; whether you'll keep the club clean; and whether you'll work as part of a team.
Does Planet Fitness have an assessment test?
Planet Fitness doesn't publish one. Franchisees run their own hiring, so if a test is part of your application, the club will tell you. Treat claims elsewhere about a standard Planet Fitness test as unconfirmed.
What training does Planet Fitness give new staff?
Planet Fitness runs Planet Fitness University, an online training programme. It says the courses cover customer service, operational policies, brand standards, cleanliness, security awareness, crisis management and vendor product information, and that the core curriculum is offered in English and Spanish. It offers PF University to franchisees at no cost; how each club uses it is up to the operator.
Planet Fitness interview questions to prepare for
Planet Fitness doesn't publish its interview questions. These are the questions to prepare for, based on what the company says about its clubs, staff and mission. For "tell me about a time" questions, structure your answer with the STAR method (situation, task, action, result).
1. Why do you want to work at Planet Fitness?
Tie your answer to the Judgement Free Zone. Planet Fitness says it is a place "where anyone – and we mean anyone – can feel they belong". Say why that matters to you, perhaps from your own experience of gyms, and what you'd bring to the club.
2. What does the Judgement Free Zone mean to you?
Planet Fitness describes it as a welcoming, non-intimidating environment where people of all fitness levels can work out at their own pace "without ever having to worry about being judged". Explain it in your own words and give one example of how you'd act on it at the front desk or on the gym floor.
3. How would you welcome a first-time member who seems nervous?
Planet Fitness says "you do not need to be fit before joining". Describe what you'd do: a friendly greeting, a short tour, pointing out the free small-group instruction, and checking in on them next visit.
4. Tell me about a time you gave great customer service.
Customer service is the first topic Planet Fitness lists in its PF University training. Use a real example from a job, school or volunteering where you helped someone patiently and they left happier.
5. What would you do if a member complained about another member?
The Judgement Free Zone applies to members as well as staff. Say you would listen, stay calm and neutral, follow the club's policy, and bring in a manager if the situation needed it. Avoid taking sides before you know what happened.
6. How do you feel about cleaning as part of the job?
Planet Fitness says a clean, sanitised club is part of its experience, and cleanliness is one of the areas staff at its corporate-owned clubs are measured on. Be honest and positive: say you understand it's part of the role and give an example of keeping a space tidy without being asked.
7. Tell me about a time you worked as part of a team.
Planet Fitness's brand promise is "Grow Stronger Together". Describe a time you helped a teammate or pitched in on a task that wasn't strictly yours, and what it meant for the team.
8. How would you handle an emergency in the club?
Security awareness and crisis management are among the PF University training topics. You don't need to know the club's procedures yet. Say you would stay calm, make sure people are safe, call for help and follow the procedures you're trained on.
9. For trainer roles: how would you coach a beginner in a small group?
Staff trainers give free instruction in small groups to members of every level. Explain how you'd keep it simple, adjust exercises for different abilities, and encourage people without making anyone feel judged.
10. What is your availability?
Planet Fitness says member joins are typically highest in January, so expect questions about busy periods. Give honest days and hours, including whether you can work early mornings, evenings and weekends if the club needs them.
11. Tell me about something new you learned quickly.
New staff learn the club's policies, brand standards and systems. Pick an example where you picked up a task or tool fast and explain how.
12. Do you have any questions for us?
Have two ready. Good options: how new staff are trained, what a typical shift looks like, and what the best team members at this club do well.
For more practice, see our list of behavioural interview questions.
How to prepare for a Planet Fitness interview
- Read the posting closely, including who the employer is and what the role covers.
- Visit the club you applied to and notice how staff greet members and keep the floor tidy.
- Know the Judgement Free Zone well enough to explain it in your own words.
- Prepare three or four STAR stories covering customer service, a difficult situation, teamwork and learning quickly.
- Know your availability, including early, late and weekend shifts.
- Practise your answers out loud, ideally in a mock interview.
Practising realistic work tasks
Interviews reward prepared stories. Front-of-house work rewards judgement with real members, and that improves with practice on realistic tasks. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs free practice job simulations for job seekers. It isn't affiliated with Planet Fitness and doesn't use Planet Fitness's questions.
