Uber Interview Process, Questions and Online Assessment

The short answer

Uber’s interview process runs from a recruiter call to a hiring manager chat, a role-dependent exercise or assessment, a set of team interviews and a decision. Software engineers take a HackerRank coding assessment and a technical phone screen before three 60-minute interviews: two coding rounds and one on collaboration and leadership. Uber doesn’t publish an end-to-end timeline.

  • Uber’s general guide describes a 30-minute recruiter call, a 30-minute hiring manager chat and about four team sessions of 30 to 60 minutes.
  • Some sales roles start with a graded online assessment that Uber calls a decision point.
  • Interviewers check your answers against Uber’s values, including Trip Obsessed and One Uber, so prepare STAR examples for each.
  • Rescheduling is limited, so keep the interview slot you accept.

Uber's interview process has the same backbone for most corporate roles: a recruiter call, a hiring manager chat, an exercise or assessment for some roles, team interviews and a decision. Engineering adds a HackerRank coding test and a technical phone screen. The questions test Uber's competencies for your role and its values.

Everything below comes from Uber's How we hire page and its role-by-role interview guides, linked as we go. Uber says the steps vary by role, location and business needs, so your recruiter has the final word on your process. This guide covers corporate and tech jobs at Uber. Signing up to drive or deliver is a separate process.

What is the Uber hiring process?

You apply, speak to a recruiter, meet the hiring manager, complete any exercise your role requires, then interview with the team. Uber's how we hire page lists these steps and says technical roles add a technical interview, worked through with an interviewer in real time.

Uber says it's looking for people who "bring new ideas, adapt quickly, and can build at global scale". It doesn't publish how long the whole process takes.

The order differs by role family:

RoleStages Uber lists, in order
Software engineering (backend, frontend)Recruiter call (30 min), HackerRank coding assessment, technical phone screen (60 min), Coding 1 (60 min), Coding 2 (60 min), Collaboration & Leadership (60 min), decision
SalesOnline assessment (some roles), recruiter call (30 min), hiring manager (45 min), role-play or case study (some roles), meet the team (3 to 4 sessions of 60 min), decision
Product managementTalent acquisition chat (20 to 30 min), business phone screen (45 to 60 min), jam session and interview loop, decision
InternshipsRecruiter phone screen, work-related assessment (some roles), business interview with the team, outcome

What happens in the Uber recruiter call?

It's a virtual conversation of about 30 minutes with a recruiter or sourcer about your background and skills, the role and what working at Uber is like. Uber's guide says to have a short "tell me about yourself" answer ready and to explain why you want the job beyond the brand name. Sales candidates should know their numbers, such as quota and deal size.

What happens in the Uber hiring manager interview?

The hiring manager goes deeper into your experience, your decisions and how you approach problems at scale, usually focusing on a few of the role's competencies. Uber's general guide puts it at about 30 minutes; the sales guide says 45. You'll also have time for role-specific questions, so bring some.

Does Uber have an online assessment?

For some roles, yes. Uber's backend and frontend engineering guides list a HackerRank coding assessment after the recruiter call. The sales guide lists a graded online assessment for some roles, which Uber says is a decision point. Other roles may get an analytics task, a written exercise, a portfolio review or a work simulation instead.

Uber doesn't publish how long these assessments are, what they contain or what score you need. Our guide to HackerRank tests explains how the platform works. For a sales assessment, our guide to sales assessment tests covers the common formats employers use.

What happens in the Uber technical interviews?

Software engineers have a 60-minute business (technical) phone screen covering coding plus design and architecture, then three 60-minute interviews:

  • Coding 1: algorithms and data structures.
  • Coding 2: depth in your specialisation.
  • Collaboration & Leadership: questions on the collaboration and leadership competency.

Uber assesses three competencies, collaboration and leadership, design and architecture, and software engineering, with expectations rising by level from L3 to L6 and above. Its tips are to clarify requirements before you start, think about real-world constraints and explain how you reached your answer. Uber's guides don't name the programming languages you can use, so check with your recruiter.

What happens in the Uber team interviews?

You meet members of the hiring team and colleagues from other functions, in about four sessions of 30 to 60 minutes (three or four 60-minute sessions for sales). They can be virtual or in person. If you completed an exercise or case study, you may be asked to present it or take part in a mock role-play.

Uber's guides say interviewers assess you against the role's competencies and against Uber's values. The sales guide says those competencies are shared with you in advance. For virtual interviews Uber uses Zoom, and it asks you to test the link a few days ahead.

What happens after the Uber interview?

Your recruiter reviews your performance against the job's criteria and Uber's values with the interview panel, then tells you the outcome. Engineering candidates are told "ASAP" if it isn't a fit. Uber doesn't publish how long a decision takes.

What does Uber look for?

Uber's guides name two values interviewers look for: Trip Obsessed (for example, a project where you changed how work got done) and One Uber (working across teams). Uber's about page also stresses "doing the right thing, period".

Each role family has its own competencies:

RoleCompetencies Uber lists
EngineeringCollaboration and leadership; design and architecture; software engineering
SalesCustomer centricity; negotiation and deal-making; market and platform expertise; sales lifecycle management; stakeholder management
ProductProduct insight and vision; impact and execution; leadership and scope; technical depth

The engineering guide adds success attributes: adaptability, bias towards action, collaboration, an entrepreneurial approach, grit, interpersonal influence and inquisitiveness.

Common Uber interview questions and how to answer them

Uber doesn't publish a question list. Its guides give example prompts in the form "Tell me about a time when..." and "Describe how you have...". The questions below are built from the competencies and values Uber lists.

1. Tell me about yourself.

Uber's guide asks you to have an elevator pitch ready: a short overview of your career and your top accomplishments. Keep it to two minutes and end on why this role is your next step.

2. Why Uber?

Uber says to explain your motivation beyond brand recognition. Name the business line you'd join, such as Uber Eats or Uber for Business, and something specific from a recent launch in the Uber newsroom.

3. Tell me about a project where you changed how your team worked.

This is the Trip Obsessed example Uber gives. Use STAR: what was slow or broken, what you changed, and the measurable result.

4. Tell me about a time you worked across teams to get something done.

This tests One Uber. Pick an example with real friction between teams, and show how you aligned people who didn't report to you.

5. Describe how you have managed a difficult stakeholder.

Uber uses this prompt shape in its guide, and stakeholder management is a sales competency. Explain what the stakeholder needed, how you found out and what you agreed.

6. Solve this algorithms and data structures problem.

This is Coding 1. Clarify the inputs and edge cases first, talk through your approach, then write working code. Uber says it wants to hear how you reached your answer.

7. How would you design this system?

Design and architecture is covered in the engineering phone screen. Start with requirements and scale, sketch the main components, then discuss trade-offs and real-world constraints, which Uber's tips call out.

8. Tell me about a time you led without authority.

This fits the Collaboration & Leadership interview and Uber's "interpersonal influence" attribute. Show how you persuaded people with evidence.

9. Tell me about a time you acted quickly with incomplete information.

Bias towards action is on Uber's engineering list, and the how we hire page says Uber wants people who adapt quickly. Explain the decision, the risk you accepted and what you'd do differently.

10. Walk me through a deal you closed.

For sales, Uber's role-play tests discovery, a value-based pitch, handling objections and closing. Walk through each of those stages with your numbers.

11. How would you improve this Uber product?

Product insight and vision is a product competency. Pick a user, name a specific problem, propose a change and say how you'd measure it.

12. Tell me about a time you had to do the right thing when it was hard.

Uber's about page puts weight on doing the right thing. Choose an example where the honest choice cost you something, and say what happened.

13. Do you have any questions for us?

Uber's tips include asking the right questions. Ask about the team's priorities, how success is measured in the first months, and how the team works with other functions.

How to prepare for the Uber interview

  1. Read your role's interview guide on jobs.uber.com. Uber publishes guides for engineering domains, product, sales, sciences, community operations, internships and leadership conversations.
  2. List the competencies for your role and prepare one or two examples for each, as Uber suggests, in STAR form. Our behavioural interview questions give you more to practise on.
  3. Prepare an example for Trip Obsessed and one for One Uber.
  4. For engineering, practise coding out loud on algorithms and data structures, and practise system design from requirements to trade-offs.
  5. Learn the business line you're applying to and read recent Uber news.
  6. Test Zoom, your camera, microphone and connection a few days before, and join a few minutes early.
  7. Do a mock interview so the panel interviews don't feel new.

Practising realistic work tasks

Uber's exercises and work simulations test how you handle the real work, and that improves with practice on realistic tasks. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. It isn't affiliated with Uber and doesn't use Uber's interview questions or assessments.
