Tesla interview questions focus on your skills and your track record. In its annual report for 2025, Tesla says "Hiring, evaluation, and promotion decisions are based on skills and performance". Expect to be asked what you built, fixed, sold or improved, and how you did it.
Tesla hires across very different jobs: engineering, manufacturing, sales and service are the groups its annual report names. The interview for a production associate is not the one for a software engineer. Below is what Tesla itself says, then questions to prepare for with how to answer each one for Tesla. Where Tesla doesn't say something, we say so.
The Tesla hiring process at a glance
Tesla's annual report doesn't set out these steps. This is a general outline; ask your recruiter what to expect.
| Step | What happens | What Tesla says about timing |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Find a role | Search Tesla's careers site for open roles. | Not published |
| 2. Application | Apply online to the specific role. | Not published |
| 3. Interviews | One or more interviews. Tesla's annual report doesn't describe them. | Not published; ask your recruiter |
| 4. Offer | An offer if you're selected. | Not published |
What is the Tesla hiring process?
Typically you apply to a specific role and interview before any offer. Tesla's annual report doesn't describe its interview stages, and they may differ between a factory role, a service role and a corporate or engineering role. Once a recruiter contacts you, ask how many conversations to expect, who you'll meet and whether there's any test or exercise.
What Tesla does say is what it hires for. Its human capital section says decisions are based on skills and performance, that it wants employees to "contribute meaningfully from day one", and that safety and health "remain core values".

What is the Tesla interview process like?
Tesla's annual report doesn't describe its interview process; ask your recruiter. Prepare for two kinds of question in any Tesla interview:
- Evidence questions. Because Tesla hires on skills and performance, expect to be asked for specific results you achieved and the part you personally played.
- Role questions. Engineering candidates should expect technical questions on their field. Manufacturing and service candidates should expect questions on safety, quality and working at pace.
Be precise about what you did yourself, as opposed to what your team did. Vague answers are the easiest way to lose a skills-based interview.
Does Tesla have an assessment or coding test?
Tesla's annual report doesn't say whether it uses a pre-hire test, and it may vary by role. If you're sent a coding test, our HackerRank test guide explains how timed coding assessments generally work. If you're asked scenario questions about what you'd do at work, our guide to situational judgement tests explains that format. Ask your recruiter what any test involves before you take it.
What are the routes into Tesla for students and career changers?
Tesla's annual report lists internships, military fellowships, a Manufacturing Development Program and an Engineering Development Program, and "Apprenticeships and START training", which it says combine academic and hands-on learning. In Berlin it runs a Dual Study programme that combines study with practical experience, and in Shanghai and the wider Asia-Pacific region it runs internships, trainee and apprenticeship programmes. Look for these on Tesla's careers site.
Tesla interview questions and how to answer them
Tesla's annual report doesn't include a question list. These are questions to prepare for, chosen to match what Tesla says it hires for: skills, performance, contribution from day one, safety and its mission. Use the STAR structure (situation, task, action, result) for "tell me about a time" questions. Our STAR method guide shows how.
1. Why do you want to work at Tesla?
Connect your answer to the work you'd do. Tesla's stated mission is "building a world of amazing abundance"; say which part of Tesla's products or operations you want to contribute to and why your skills fit it.
2. Walk me through your background.
Keep it to the experience that matters for this role and end with a concrete result. Tesla says it hires on skills and performance, so lead with what you can do.
3. Tell me about the hardest problem you've worked on and how you solved it.
Pick a technical or operational problem where you did the key work. Explain the problem, the options you considered, what you chose and the measurable outcome. Tesla hires on skills and performance, so make your own part clear.
4. Tell me about a result you're proud of. What exactly was your part?
This tests performance and honesty together. Separate your contribution from your team's, and give numbers you can stand behind.
5. How would you get up to speed in your first weeks?
Tesla says it wants people to "contribute meaningfully from day one". Describe how you learn a new system quickly: asking questions, reading the documentation and shipping something small early.
6. Tell me about a time you worked under a tight deadline.
Explain how you prioritised, what you dropped or simplified, and how you kept quality up. Tesla wants people to "contribute meaningfully from day one", so show you can deliver at pace. Be honest about what you'd do differently.
7. Tell me about a time you spotted a safety risk. What did you do?
Tesla calls safety and health core values and says employees have channels for reporting concerns. For factory and service roles especially, show that you stop and report a risk rather than work around it.
8. Tell me about a time you improved a process.
Describe the old way, what you changed and the result in time, cost or quality. Concrete improvements are the clearest evidence of skills and performance.
9. Tell me about a time you disagreed with a manager or teammate.
Tesla's annual report says it aims to sustain "a respectful, innovative environment". Show that you argued from evidence, listened respectfully, and committed to the decision once it was made.
10. Tell me about a time you failed.
Pick a real failure, own your part and say what you changed afterwards. Skills-based interviews reward self-awareness.
11. For engineering roles: explain a design decision you made and its trade-offs.
Tesla hires on skills, so choose a project you know in depth. Explain the constraints, the alternatives and why you chose your approach, and be ready for follow-up questions on the details.
12. For sales and service roles: tell me about a time you turned around an unhappy customer.
Tesla names sales and service among the staff it needs to recruit. Describe how you listened, solved the problem and kept the customer.

What happens after the Tesla interview?
Tesla's annual report doesn't say what happens next or how long a decision takes. Ask your recruiter at the end of your last interview when you should expect to hear back.
How to prepare for a Tesla interview
- Read the job posting closely and list the skills it asks for.
- Match a specific result to each skill, with numbers where you have them.
- Prepare six STAR stories: a hard problem, a result you're proud of, a deadline, a process improvement, a disagreement and a failure.
- For factory and service roles, prepare a safety example.
- For technical roles, revise the fundamentals of your field and be ready to explain your past projects in depth.
- Practise out loud. Our mock interview guide shows how to run one.
- Ask your recruiter how many rounds there are and whether any include a test or exercise.
Practising realistic work tasks
Tesla says it hires on skills and performance, and the most direct way to improve both is practice on realistic tasks. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. Cohesyve isn't affiliated with Tesla and doesn't use Tesla's questions or hiring materials.
