CBP Hiring Process 2026: Officer Exam, Interview, Steps

The short answer

CBP hires frontline officers through USAJOBS: an application, a three-part entrance exam, then a structured interview, medical exam, fitness test, polygraph, background investigation and drug test before a final offer and academy training. CBP says time to hire varies; GAO put the CBP Officer average at 578 days for FY2018 to early FY2024, inflated by a backlog CBP has since cleared.

  • The CBP Officer exam has an Experience Record and a Writing Skills Test at home, and a Logical Reasoning Test at a test centre.
  • The structured interview uses hypothetical situations and measures judgement, emotional maturity, interpersonal skills and cooperativeness.
  • The July 2025 announcement set a 101-day training programme at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Glynco, Georgia; check the current announcement.
  • You can give location preferences, but CBP assigns duty stations by operational need.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) hires its frontline law enforcement staff through one shared process: a USAJOBS application, an entrance exam, and a set of pre-employment checks that include a structured interview, a polygraph and a full background investigation. This guide follows the CBP Officer route, the uniformed officers who work at ports of entry. Border Patrol Agents go through the same steps with a different exam and fitness standard.

Everything below comes from CBP's own documents, its USAJOBS announcements and a GAO report, linked as we go. Where CBP doesn't publish something, we say so.

What is the CBP application process?

You apply on USAJOBS to an open CBP announcement with a resume, the online questionnaire and any documents that prove your eligibility. The most recent full entry-level CBP Officer announcement we could read, CBPO 25-10 (July 2025), set these conditions:

  • US citizenship.
  • Residency: at least three of the last five years living in the United States or its protectorates, unless CBP grants a waiver.
  • Age: you must be referred for selection before your 40th birthday. Prior federal law enforcement service or veterans' preference can qualify you for a waiver.
  • A valid driver's licence.
  • Firearms eligibility: officers carry a firearm, so anyone convicted of a misdemeanour crime of domestic violence, or barred from carrying by certain other legal issues, isn't eligible.
  • Uniform and grooming standards on duty, and a one-year probationary period.

The announcement describes the job as enforcing customs, immigration and agriculture laws, inspecting people and conveyances, deciding whether people can enter the United States, and stopping illegal entry, drugs and contraband while facilitating legitimate trade and travel.

CBP reviews applicants during the open period as they complete the exam, so applying and testing early in the window helps. Check the current announcement for its own dates and terms.

What is on the CBP Officer entrance exam?

The CBP Officer exam has three parts. CBP's exam preparation guide (April 2024) gives these maximum times:

PartWhereMaximum time
Candidate Experience RecordAt home60 minutes
Writing Skills TestAt home63 minutes
Navigation previewTest centre5 minutes
Logical Reasoning TestTest centre83 minutes

What the guide and the announcement add:

  • The Experience Record asks about your background, and you have 72 hours from the email to finish it.
  • The Writing Skills Test must be completed once you start it; you can't exit and come back.
  • The Logical Reasoning Test is built on paragraphs about CBP or government work. You must treat every fact in the passage as true and reason from it.
  • Both tests are computer adaptive. You can't skip a question or go back. There's no penalty for guessing, and each question has five options, so eliminate what you can and answer everything.
  • A missed exam ends your application. Cancel a test centre slot less than 24 hours ahead, or don't finish the at-home parts, and CBP treats your application as abandoned.
  • Failing means a 90-day wait before you can retest, and the announcement warns that "a passing score does not guarantee selection."

CBP doesn't publish a pass mark for the current exam. Its guide has practice questions; do those first.

What happens after the CBP entrance exam?

If you pass and your documents check out, CBP makes a conditional offer and the pre-employment steps begin. CBP's applicant FAQs describe each one.

The medical exam and fitness test

The medical exam covers a physician exam with history review, vision testing (acuity, colour vision, depth perception and peripheral vision) and a hearing test. The fitness test for CBP Officers is 20 sit-ups, 12 push-ups and five minutes of a step test at 120 beats per minute, with one retest. Both can be done on the same day at a CBP-contracted site near your address, and you pay your own travel. CBP offers a free six-week Physical Readiness Program to prepare.

The polygraph

The polygraph covers your suitability and any national security concerns. It takes about four hours, but only short periods of 10 to 15 minutes are on the equipment. The examiner reviews every question with you first. CBP may accept a prior federal polygraph, and certain veterans may be eligible for a waiver.

The background investigation and drug test

CBP Officer is a national security position with a Tier 5 investigation. CBP says the investigation considers all aspects of your life, and that its length depends on your history. The drug test happens at a random point; CBP tests at least for marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, opiates and PCP, and marijuana use can affect eligibility regardless of state law.

What is the CBP structured interview?

The structured interview presents hypothetical situations and asks how you'd react. CBP's FAQs say two or more interviewers ask questions designed to measure four competencies: judgement and decision-making, emotional maturity, interpersonal skills, and cooperativeness and sensitivity to the needs of others.

It may be scheduled on the same day as a pre-security interview, where uniformed officers give you the chance to disclose or explain any past conduct before the polygraph. Be complete and consistent with your background forms.

CBP interview questions to practise

CBP doesn't publish its interview questions. These are practice questions we wrote around the four competencies and the officer duties in the announcement. For scenario questions, give a clear sequence: what you'd do first, why, and what next. Our guide to situational interview questions explains the format.

  1. "A traveller becomes angry when you send them to secondary inspection. What do you do?" Emotional maturity. Stay calm, explain the next step without arguing, keep control of the situation and call a supervisor if it escalates.
  2. "A traveller's story doesn't match their documents. How do you proceed?" Judgement. Ask follow-up questions, check what you can, and refer to secondary inspection under procedure rather than guessing.
  3. "A friend asks you to let a package through without checking it. What do you do?" Integrity. Refuse and report it. Officers decide who and what enters the country.
  4. "Your supervisor gives an instruction you disagree with. What do you do?" Cooperativeness. Follow it if it's lawful, raise your concern at the right time, and accept the decision.
  5. "A traveller doesn't speak English and is clearly confused. How do you help?" Sensitivity to others' needs. Slow down, use plain language or available interpretation, and stay courteous while still doing the inspection properly.
  6. "You notice a colleague cutting corners on inspections. What do you do?" Judgement and integrity. Raise it with them, and report it if it continues. Missed inspections let contraband through.
  7. "Tell us about a time you handled a high-pressure situation." Use the STAR method. Pick an example where you stayed composed and made a decision you were accountable for.
  8. "Describe a time you worked in a team with people very different from you." Interpersonal skills. Ports of entry mean working with colleagues, other agencies and travellers from everywhere.
  9. "How would you handle being posted far from home?" CBP's FAQs say locations depend on operational need and the openings available when you get your offer. Show you've planned for it.
  10. "Why CBP?" Link your answer to CBP's mission to "protect the American people, safeguard our borders and enhance the nation's economic prosperity", and to the officer's mix of enforcement and facilitating lawful trade and travel.

How long does the CBP hiring process take?

CBP doesn't publish a standard timeline. Its FAQs say time to hire depends on the position, the background investigation it requires and how quickly you and the investigator complete the materials. Once every step is done, CBP says the final offer follows about two weeks later.

The best independent data is from the Government Accountability Office's September 2024 report. Average time-to-hire for CBP Officers was 578 days from fiscal year 2018 to the middle of fiscal year 2024. GAO said that rose because of an application backlog, which CBP has since cleared, and that CBP had moved steps online and lets applicants complete some steps at the same time.

What training do new CBP Officers get?

New officers are detailed to the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Glynco, Georgia, for a 101-day training programme in basic law enforcement skills, according to the 2025 announcement. You must complete it to keep the job. CBP's FAQs say officers who lack sufficient Spanish and are assigned to the southern border, Miami or Puerto Rico also attend a six-week Basic Spanish programme. CBP Agriculture Specialists train partly with the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

How to prepare for the CBP hiring process

  1. Read the current USAJOBS announcement in full, including age, residency and firearms conditions.
  2. Apply and test early in the open period, since CBP reviews applicants as they finish the exam.
  3. Do CBP's practice questions for writing and logical reasoning before you start the timed tests.
  4. Start the Physical Readiness Program well before your fitness test.
  5. Complete your background forms carefully. Disclose everything, and stay consistent through the interviews and polygraph.
  6. Rehearse scenario answers out loud, ideally in a mock interview.
  7. Keep the Hiring Center informed if you travel or move, so you don't miss a step.

Practising decisions under pressure

The structured interview rewards clear, calm decisions on situations you haven't seen before. Practising realistic scenarios helps. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs free practice job simulations with a scored report on where you lost marks. It isn't affiliated with CBP and doesn't use CBP's exams or questions.

FAQs

Is the CBP hiring process the same for Border Patrol Agents?

The steps are the same, but the exam and fitness test differ. The Border Patrol Agent exam has an Experience Record and a Logical Reasoning Test, with no writing test, and its fitness test asks for more push-ups and sit-ups.

What is the age limit for CBP Officers?

The July 2025 announcement required referral for selection before your 40th birthday, with waivers for prior federal law enforcement service or veterans' preference. Check the current announcement.

Can I retake the CBP entrance exam?

Yes, after a 90-day wait from the date you failed.

Does CBP pay for travel to the medical exam or fitness test?

No. CBP's FAQs say you travel to the nearest contracted site at your own expense.

Can I travel abroad during the CBP hiring process?

Yes. CBP says to keep your Hiring Center representative and recruiter informed so you don't miss steps that could require you to reapply.

Do I have to give up dual citizenship to work for CBP?

No. CBP says dual citizenship isn't a suitability issue if you're a US citizen, though it's reviewed if a security clearance is required.
