Caterpillar Interview Questions and Hiring Process

The short answer

Caterpillar interview questions are mostly behavioural, and Caterpillar’s own recruiters tell candidates to answer them with the STAR method. Its hiring process varies by role but generally runs from an application review to a recruiter screen, interviews and sometimes extra assessments, with pre-employment checks for certain roles. Caterpillar doesn’t publish a timeline and says response times vary by role.

  • Caterpillar’s virtual interview advice is to prepare 5 to 6 STAR stories matched to the job’s skills.
  • You can’t edit an application after you submit it, so check it first.
  • Real recruiter emails will most likely come from an @cat.com address.
  • Caterpillar doesn’t publish its interview rounds, test provider or timeline.

Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations with a scored report on where you lost marks. Cohesyve isn’t affiliated with Caterpillar and doesn’t use Caterpillar’s assessments or interview questions.

Caterpillar interview questions are mostly about your experience: what you did, how you did it and why it fits the role. Caterpillar's own careers blog tells candidates to expect behavioural questions and to answer them with the STAR method. Its hiring process, according to its careers FAQ, generally runs from an application review to a recruiter screen, interviews and, for some roles, additional assessments.

Everything below comes from Caterpillar's own careers pages, linked as we go. Where Caterpillar doesn't say something, we say so.

How do you apply to Caterpillar?

Search and apply on Caterpillar Jobs. From the FAQ:

  • Documents. A current resume is most often required, but not always. Postings list anything else, such as a cover letter, certifications or proof of work eligibility.
  • Tailor each application. Caterpillar advises highlighting the skills and experience that match the role and keeping your resume clear and up to date.
  • Apply for more than one role if you like. "Use my profile" fills in later applications from your saved details.
  • Check before you submit. You can't edit a submitted application. Use "Save and Continue" to finish later. Otherwise you'd have to withdraw and reapply with a new account and a new email address.
  • Remote, hybrid, visas and relocation are stated on each posting. Caterpillar says some roles may offer visa sponsorship, depending on the position and location.
  • Former employees follow the same process as everyone else.

What is the Caterpillar interview process?

Caterpillar doesn't publish a fixed number of rounds or how long interviews last. Its FAQ describes a recruiter screen followed by interviews, and its careers blog publishes general interview advice plus a guide to virtual interviews. Caterpillar's Virtual Recruiting Team interviews by live video, for example with students from schools where it has no on-campus presence.

What Caterpillar's recruiters say to expect:

  • Behavioural questions. Its virtual interview guide says to expect them and answer with STAR.
  • Questions about your fit for the role. Caterpillar's FAQ advice is: "Be prepared to discuss your experience. Show how it aligns to the role and bring thoughtful questions to the conversation."
  • Questions about why you applied. Its interview guide says Caterpillar wants to know why you feel it's the role for you.

For a video interview, Caterpillar asks you to keep your camera on, test your camera and microphone beforehand, sit somewhere well lit with a tidy background, and dress professionally for the role.

Does Caterpillar have an assessment?

For some roles. Caterpillar's FAQ says the process may include additional assessments, but it doesn't name them, say which roles use them or publish their format. If you're invited to one, the invitation should explain it. If it shows you work scenarios and asks what you'd do, our situational judgement test guide explains that format in general.

Does Caterpillar do background checks or drug tests?

Caterpillar says certain roles may require pre-employment checks, in line with local laws and business requirements, and that you'll be told about them during the hiring process. Its FAQ doesn't describe drug screening beyond that, so ask your recruiter.

How long does the Caterpillar hiring process take?

Caterpillar doesn't publish a timeline. It says, "Our response times vary for each role." You can follow your status under "My Applications" in your Caterpillar careers account, and contact your recruiter if you've been assigned one.

How do students and graduates join Caterpillar?

Caterpillar's Interns and Graduates page and Professional Development Programs page list early careers routes:

Common Caterpillar interview questions and how to answer them

Caterpillar doesn't publish its interview questions. These are questions to prepare for, based on what its careers pages say it looks for. Use STAR (situation, task, action, result), as Caterpillar's recruiters recommend; our STAR method guide explains it.

1. Tell me about yourself.

Keep it short and point it at the role. Caterpillar's recruiters want to hear how your experience overlaps with the job's responsibilities.

2. Why do you want to work at Caterpillar?

Caterpillar's interview guide says to research the company and the role and be ready to say what excites you about the work. Pick a specific product, business or site, and say why it interests you.

3. Why this role?

Caterpillar wants to know why you feel it's the role for you. Link two or three of your skills to the posting's requirements.

4. Tell me about a time you put safety first.

Safety leads the list of cultural traits in Caterpillar's FAQ. For plant, field and engineering roles especially, describe a time you stopped, reported or fixed something unsafe, and what changed afterwards.

5. Tell me about a time you worked with a team to solve a problem.

This maps to collaboration. Make your own part clear, and say how the team reached the result.

6. Tell me about an improvement you made to a process or product.

This maps to innovation. Give the before and after, and how you measured the difference.

7. Tell me about a technical problem you solved.

Caterpillar's virtual interview guide says candidates for technical roles should include examples of their technical ability. Explain the problem, your approach and the result, and define any jargon.

8. Explain a project to someone outside your field.

Caterpillar's recruiters suggest practising this, because your interviewer may come from another area. Practise a two-minute version of your main project.

9. Tell me about a decision you made and what you learned from it.

Caterpillar's virtual interview guide asks for stories that show decision-making and learning. Pick one where the outcome taught you something you still use.

10. Tell me about a time you worked with people from different backgrounds.

This maps to inclusion. Show how you made sure different views were heard and what that changed.

11. Tell me about a time you adapted to a change at work or school.

Pick a real change, such as a new system, a new manager or a shifted deadline. Show how quickly you adjusted and what you delivered.

12. Do you have any questions for us?

Caterpillar's guide says asking questions is just as important as answering them. Ask about the team, what success looks like in the first year and how people build careers at Caterpillar.

Our list of behavioural interview questions gives you more to practise on.

How to prepare for a Caterpillar interview

  1. Research Caterpillar and the role, as its recruiters advise, so you can say what excites you about the work.
  2. Prepare 5 to 6 STAR stories, the number Caterpillar's virtual interview guide suggests, covering safety, teamwork, improvement, technical skill, decision-making and learning.
  3. Match each story to a skill in the job posting.
  4. Practise explaining your work to someone outside your field.
  5. For video interviews, test your camera and microphone, check your lighting and background, and keep your camera on.
  6. Prepare thoughtful questions about the role and careers at Caterpillar.
  7. Do a mock interview with someone who'll give you honest feedback.
  8. Ask about accommodations if you need them. Caterpillar says reasonable accommodations are available in accordance with local laws.

Watch for recruitment fraud. Caterpillar says it will never ask for money, passport or bank details, or Social Security numbers, won't contact you from free email services, and that recruiter emails will most likely come from "@cat.com".

Practising realistic work tasks

Interviews reward prepared stories, and those stories are easier to tell when you've practised the work itself. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. It isn't affiliated with Caterpillar and doesn't use Caterpillar's assessments or interview questions.
