Blue Origin Interview Questions and Hiring Process

The short answer

Blue Origin doesn’t publish its interview stages, but its job postings show what interviewers look for: passion for its mission, a commitment to safety, fast learning, problem solving and teamwork. Expect behavioural questions on those themes plus role-specific technical questions. Every applicant must meet US export control rules and pass a standard background check.

  • Its engineering and design postings say passion for its mission and vision is required.
  • Applicants must be a US citizen or national, a permanent resident, or admitted to the US as a refugee or asylee.
  • Its postings encourage you to apply even if you don’t meet every desired qualification.
  • Blue Origin doesn’t publish a timeline, the number of interview rounds or any assessment.

Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations with a scored report on where you lost marks. Cohesyve isn’t affiliated with Blue Origin and doesn’t use its interview questions or assessments.

Blue Origin's interview questions centre on its mission, safety, how fast you learn, how you solve problems and how you work in a team, plus technical questions for your role. Blue Origin doesn't publish its interview stages or a timeline, so this guide works from what its own job postings say.

We read Blue Origin's current postings on its careers site, listed under Sources. Each posting we read carries the same eligibility, background check and culture text. Where Blue Origin doesn't say something, we say so.

What is the Blue Origin hiring process?

You apply to a specific posting, and if your background fits, you're invited to interview, then made an offer subject to a background check. Blue Origin doesn't publish the stages in between, so ask your recruiter how many interviews there will be, who you'll meet and whether any stage includes a presentation or a technical exercise.

Postings stay open "until the requisition is closed", with no fixed deadline, so apply while the role is listed.

What happens when you apply to Blue Origin?

You apply online to a posting. Read the minimum and preferred qualifications closely, because Blue Origin's postings ask for demonstrated evidence. A technician posting, for example, asks candidates to "provide examples of past documentation and HMI usage", and a project management posting asks for a track record of driving work through people who don't report to you.

You don't need to meet every preferred qualification. Every posting includes this culture statement: if you're excited about the role but your experience "doesn't align perfectly with every desired qualification", Blue Origin encourages you to apply anyway.

Who is eligible to work at Blue Origin?

Blue Origin's postings cite export control regulations: applicants must be a US citizen or national, a US permanent resident (a current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted to the US as a refugee or granted asylum. The rule appears on every posting we read, so check it before you apply.

What is the Blue Origin interview process?

Blue Origin doesn't publish its interview format. What its postings show:

  • Communication is assessed. A technician posting asks for verbal and written communication shown "by prior performance reviews or interview assessment".
  • Mission fit is a requirement. Postings for engineering and design roles state: "Passion for our mission and vision is required."
  • Safety comes first. A launch operations posting calls safety and mission assurance "our north star".

Postings list specific tools and standards (such as Siemens NX and ASME Y14.5 for the Technical Designer role), so be ready to discuss each one in detail.

If you need an accommodation to take part in the application or interview process, Blue Origin asks you to email EEOCompliance@blueorigin.com, without including personal medical information.

Does Blue Origin have an online assessment or coding test?

Blue Origin doesn't publish one. Its postings mention an "interview assessment" of communication for technician roles, but no separate online test. If your recruiter sends you an assessment, ask what format it takes and how long to allow.

What happens after the Blue Origin interview?

If you're selected, you receive an offer and go through background checks. Blue Origin's postings list:

  • Blue's Standard Background Check for all positions.
  • A Defense Biometric Identification System (DBIDS) check for roles that need access to a military installation.
  • Drug and alcohol testing and other federal requirements for certain driving roles, and pre-employment drug testing for roles that need a Merchant Mariner Credential.

Blue Origin says it considers qualified applicants with criminal histories in line with fair chance laws, including Washington's and California's. It doesn't publish how long the process takes after the final interview.

Common Blue Origin interview questions and how to answer them

Blue Origin hasn't published a question list. The questions below are ones to prepare for, based on what its postings say it looks for: mission passion, safety, "fast and eager learners, extremely hard workers, problem solvers, and instinctive team players", earning trust and a "bias for action". Answer the behavioural ones with the STAR method.

1. Why do you want to work at Blue Origin?

Blue Origin's engineering and design postings say passion for its mission is required, so connect your answer to its vision of "millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth" and to the specific programme the role supports, such as New Glenn or the Blue Moon lander. Be specific about the work you want to do there.

2. Walk me through your resume.

Expect follow-up questions on anything you list. Pick the two or three projects most relevant to the posting and be ready to explain your own part in each in detail.

3. Tell me about a time you stopped work or raised a safety concern.

Blue Origin's postings ask technicians to "initiate stop-work when safety or mission integrity is at risk". Describe what you noticed, how you raised it, what happened and what changed afterwards. Show that you'd do it again.

4. Tell me about a time you learned something new quickly.

This is the "fast and eager learners" trait. Choose a tool, system or domain you didn't know, explain how you got up to speed and what you delivered.

5. Tell me about the hardest technical problem you've solved.

Explain the problem, what you tried first, why it didn't work and how you reached the answer. Use numbers where you can, such as loads, tolerances, failure rates or time saved.

6. How do you follow a complex procedure without errors?

Technician postings ask for a "documented ability to follow complex work instructions" and complete documentation accurately. Describe your habits, such as reading the whole procedure first, checking off steps and asking when something is unclear, with an example.

7. Tell me about a time you worked as part of a team under pressure.

Blue Origin wants "instinctive team players". Pick a tight deadline or a test campaign, and show what you did to help others as well as finishing your own task.

8. Tell me about a time you earned someone's trust.

Postings ask candidates to show they can earn trust; a technician posting asks for a "demonstrated history of earning trust". Describe a working relationship that started badly or a stakeholder who doubted you, and what you did to change that.

9. Tell me about a time you acted without full direction.

A project management posting asks for a "bias for action" and the ability to operate with minimal direction. Show how you decided what to do, how you managed the risk and what the result was.

10. Tell me about a time you got something done through people who didn't report to you.

Explain how you got agreement, kept people accountable and escalated when needed. Blue Origin's project management postings ask for exactly this.

11. Talk me through how you'd approach this technical task.

Expect role-specific questions on the tools and standards in the posting, such as CAD software, analysis methods or test equipment. Think aloud, state your assumptions and check your answer.

12. What questions do you have for us?

Ask about the programme, how the team measures success, what the first few months look like and what the next steps are.

How to prepare for a Blue Origin interview

  1. Confirm you meet the export control rules before you apply.
  2. Read the posting line by line and prepare an example for each minimum qualification.
  3. Prepare STAR stories on safety, fast learning, problem solving, teamwork and earning trust.
  4. Know the programme your role supports and Blue Origin's stated vision.
  5. Revise the technical basics the posting names.
  6. Practise out loud, ideally in a mock interview. Our list of behavioural interview questions gives you more to practise on.
  7. Ask your recruiter about the format, including the number of rounds and whether you'll present.

Practising realistic work tasks

Interviews reward prepared stories. Technical rounds reward judgement on real problems, and that improves with practice on realistic tasks.
