Project Manager Resume Example

The short answer

A strong Project Manager resume opens with a short summary, groups the skills employers will test, and backs each role with bullets that show what changed because of your work. Below is a full example, summary wording for entry level or project coordinator, career changer, mid level and senior candidates, and how to get through applicant tracking systems.

  • One page for under about five years of experience; two pages is fine for senior project and programme managers.
  • Describe each project by scope, method and outcome: what was delivered, for whom and whether it landed on time and on budget.
  • If you cannot share budget figures, describe scale in words (a multi-site roll-out, a three-team programme).

A project manager resume needs to show one thing above all: that projects you run get delivered. Hiring managers look for the scale of what you managed, the methods you used, how you handled risk and change, and what the business got at the end. This guide gives you a full sample project manager resume, summary examples for every stage, bullets you can adapt, and the format and applicant tracking tips that keep a good record from being overlooked.

Experience bullet points

Delivery

  • Delivered a customer portal replacement across three development teams and two vendors, going live on the date agreed at the start of the project.
  • Recovered a late data centre migration by re-planning the cutover into four waves, which let the business keep trading through each move.
  • Ran a twelve-week office relocation for a team of several hundred staff with no lost working days.

Budget, risk and governance

  • Managed the project budget and monthly forecast, flagging a hardware cost rise early enough for the sponsor to approve a revised scope.
  • Set up a RAID log and weekly risk review that the programme office later adopted as its standard template.
  • Introduced written change control, so scope changes were costed and agreed before work started.

People and stakeholders

  • Chaired monthly steering meetings with directors from finance, operations and IT, and wrote the reports they used to make go or no-go decisions.
  • Coached two project coordinators into project manager roles.

What to include

Header

Name, city and country, email, phone and LinkedIn. UK careers advice is to leave off date of birth, marital status and nationality; leave out a photo unless the country you are applying in expects one.

Professional summary

Three or four lines: your level, the type of projects (software, construction, marketing, change), the methods you use and the size of teams or budgets you handle, described in words if you cannot share figures.

Core skills

Methods, tools and domains in short groups. Match the advert’s wording, such as Agile, PRINCE2 or Jira, where it is true for you.

Experience

Reverse chronological. For each role, name two or three significant projects with the scope, your role, the method and the outcome.

Certifications

List any project management certifications with the issuing body, for example the PMP from the Project Management Institute or a Scrum certification. Put them near the top if the advert asks for one.

Education

Degree, institution and dates. Experienced project managers can keep this short.

Formatting

  • One page for under about five years of experience; two pages is fine for senior project and programme managers.
  • Describe each project by scope, method and outcome: what was delivered, for whom and whether it landed on time and on budget.
  • If you cannot share budget figures, describe scale in words (a multi-site roll-out, a three-team programme).
  • Put certifications in their own section so a recruiter scanning for them finds them in seconds.
  • Save as PDF unless the application asks for Word.

Getting past applicant tracking systems

  • 1Use the exact method and tool names in the advert (Scrum, Kanban, MS Project, Jira) where you have used them.
  • 2Write certifications in full and with the acronym, for example “Project Management Professional (PMP)”.
  • 3Use standard section headings so the system maps your experience correctly.
  • 4Avoid putting key skills in headers, footers or graphics.
  • 5Keep job titles recognisable; add the common title in brackets if your employer used an unusual one.

Common mistakes

  • Listing duties (“responsible for managing projects”) instead of projects and outcomes.
  • Leaving out the method, so the reader cannot tell if you work in Agile, Waterfall or both.
  • Claiming every project was on time and on budget without any detail to back it up.
  • Omitting a project that went wrong, when how you recovered it is often your strongest story.
  • Listing certifications without the issuing body.

Common questions

What should a project manager resume include?

A short summary, grouped skills, certifications, and experience organised around the projects you delivered: scope, method, your role and the outcome. Education goes at the end once you have a few years of experience.

Do I need a PMP to get a project manager job?

Not always. Some employers ask for it, especially in large organisations and contracting. The PMP is issued by the Project Management Institute; check its site for the current eligibility rules before you list yourself as working towards it.

How do I write a project manager resume with no experience?

Show projects you ran in other roles: an event, a system roll-out, a process change. Describe the plan, the people involved and the result. Coordinator and PMO roles are common first steps.

Should I use a resume or a CV?

In the US, use a resume of one or two pages. In the UK and India the same document is usually called a CV. Official UK careers advice is to leave off date of birth, marital status and nationality.
