CAPM certification, the Certified Associate in Project Management, is the Project Management Institute's (PMI) entry-level credential. It's designed for people interested in, or just starting, a project management career, and for project team members who want to show they understand how projects are run. You don't need project experience to sit it.

This guide covers the CAPM requirements, the exam format and domains, how to meet the education rule, how CAPM compares with PMP, and a study plan, all based on PMI's own exam content outline.

What is CAPM certification?

CAPM is PMI's associate-level project management certification. PMI says it suits people who want to add project management skills to their current role, those starting a project career, and specialists on project teams who want to work more closely with project managers.

If you're searching for an "associate in project management certification", CAPM is the PMI credential you're looking for.

What are the CAPM requirements?

You need a secondary degree and 23 hours of project management education.

RequirementWhat PMI asks for
Education backgroundSecondary degree: high school diploma, GED or global equivalent
Project management education23 contact hours, completed by the time you take the exam
Project experienceNone required

What counts towards the 23 hours? Courses, self-study guides, workshops or training sessions from:

  • PMI Authorized Training Partners
  • PMI chapters
  • Employer or company programmes
  • Training companies or consultants
  • Distance-learning companies, including an end-of-course assessment
  • University or college academic and continuing education programmes

PMI chapter meetings don't count, unless at least an hour of the meeting is a learning activity. Course content can cover quality, scope, schedule, cost, resources, communications, risk, procurement, integration, agile and business analysis.

What is on the CAPM exam?

The CAPM exam has 150 questions in 3 hours. Fifteen are unscored pretest questions mixed in at random, so 135 count towards your result.

DomainWeight
1. Project Management Fundamentals and Core Concepts36%
2. Predictive, Plan-Based Methodologies17%
3. Agile Frameworks/Methodologies20%
4. Business Analysis Frameworks27%

A few format details from PMI:

  • Question types: multiple choice, drag-and-drop matching, hot spot (click an area of an image), and short animations or comic strips followed by a question.
  • Online proctored exams show comic strips only, not animations, to avoid sound issues.
  • Break: a 10-minute break after question 75. Once you start it, you can't go back to the first section.
  • Tutorial and survey: optional, and not counted in the 3 hours.

Notice that agile and business analysis together make up nearly half the exam. It's easy to assume CAPM is all traditional, plan-based project management. It isn't.

How many times can you take the CAPM exam?

Up to three times within a one-year eligibility period. If you don't pass after three attempts, PMI asks you to wait one year from your last attempt before reapplying for CAPM.

How do you keep CAPM certification?

PMI requires certification holders to maintain their certification through its Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) programme and renew every three years, earning professional development units (PDUs). Check PMI's CCR handbook for the current number of PDUs.

CAPM vs PMP: which should you get?

CAPM is built for people without project management experience. PMI also offers the Project Management Professional (PMP). If you've already led projects, compare PMP's current eligibility rules on pmi.org before you choose. If you're new to project work, CAPM is the natural starting point because it needs no experience.

Is CAPM certification worth it?

It can be, if you're trying to move into project work and need a recognised signal that you understand the basics. It adds less if you already have years of project leadership, where your track record speaks for itself.

CAPM works best combined with proof that you can handle real project tasks: building a plan, managing a slipping timeline, writing a status update for stakeholders. Our project manager interview questions, project coordinator job description and project manager skills guide show what employers look for. If you're leaning towards agile roles, see our scrum master career guide.

What jobs can you get with CAPM certification?

CAPM is an entry-level signal, so it pairs best with entry and junior roles where you support projects. Common targets include:

RoleWhy CAPM fits
Project coordinatorSupports schedules, logs, status reports and meetings. See the project coordinator job description
Junior or assistant project managerRuns smaller projects or workstreams under a senior PM
Business analystBusiness analysis frameworks are 27% of the exam. See our business analyst career guide
Scrum team member or aspiring scrum masterAgile is 20% of the exam. See the scrum master career guide
Operations or programme supportMany operations roles run projects without the PM title. See the operations manager career guide

On your resume, list it under Certifications as "Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM), Project Management Institute" with the year you earned it. If you're still studying, write "CAPM candidate, exam booked for" and the month.

How do you study for the CAPM?

Study by domain weight and practise the question formats.

  1. Complete your 23 hours through an accepted provider and keep records for your application.
  2. Download PMI's CAPM Exam Content Outline. It lists the tasks in each domain.
  3. Weight your time to the domain percentages: the most on fundamentals, then business analysis, agile and predictive.
  4. Learn the vocabulary. Many questions turn on terms like scope, backlog, stakeholder and risk register.
  5. Practise scenario questions, including drag-and-drop sequences.
  6. Book your exam within your eligibility year.

Example six-week plan (illustrative):

WeekFocus
1Fundamentals: project life cycles, roles, core concepts
2Fundamentals continued, plus risk and stakeholder basics
3Predictive, plan-based methods: schedules, budgets, change control
4Agile frameworks: scrum roles and events, backlogs, iterations
5Business analysis: requirements, stakeholders, traceability
6Full practice exams and review of weak areas

Can CAPM help after a layoff or career change?

Yes. CAPM needs no project experience, so it's a common first step for people moving into project work from operations, administration, customer service or a technical role. Plan the move with our guide on how to change careers, and if you've just lost your job, start with what to do when you get laid off. Our guide to explaining an employment gap helps if you study full time for a while.
