Consultant Resume Example

The short answer

A strong Consultant resume opens with a short summary, groups the skills employers will test, and backs each role with bullets that show what changed because of your work. Below is a full example, summary wording for entry level or graduate, career changer, mid level and senior candidates, and how to get through applicant tracking systems.

  • Keep it to one page at analyst and consultant level; senior candidates can go to two if every line is a relevant project.
  • Write each bullet as problem, action and result, and start it with a strong verb such as led, built, sized or designed.
  • Describe clients by sector and scale (a national grocery retailer) rather than by name, unless the client has made the work public.

A consultant resume has one job: convince a partner or hiring manager that you can walk into an unfamiliar client problem, structure it quickly and leave the client better off. That means showing the kind of problems you have solved, the analysis behind your recommendations and what the client did as a result. This guide covers each part of a consultant resume, with a full example you can adapt, summary wording for every career stage, and the mistakes that make strong candidates look generic.

Entry level or graduate

Business graduate with a final-year consulting project for a local charity, where I led the analysis of its donor data and presented three funding options to the trustees. Experience bullet points

Strategy and growth work

  • Sized the market for a client’s proposed entry into home services and built the case for a phased launch, which the board approved for two pilot regions.
  • Interviewed a dozen of the client’s largest customers and synthesised the findings into a pricing recommendation adopted in the next annual plan.
  • Built the competitor benchmark for a due diligence project in three weeks, covering product range, channels and public financial results.

Operations and cost work

  • Mapped the order-to-cash process across four business units and identified duplicated approval steps; the client removed them as part of its finance redesign.
  • Led the procurement workstream of a cost programme, running supplier reviews with category managers and tracking agreed savings in a shared model.
  • Designed the new regional operating model with the client’s HR and operations leads, including roles, decision rights and a transition plan.

Leading teams and clients

  • Managed two analysts on a six-month engagement, reviewing their models daily and coaching both through their first client presentations.
  • Ran weekly steering meetings with the client’s executive sponsor, keeping scope changes agreed in writing and the project on its original timeline.

What to include

Header

Name, city and country, email, phone and a LinkedIn link. Leave out full address, date of birth and photo unless the country you are applying in expects them; the UK National Careers Service advises leaving off date of birth, marital status and nationality.

Professional summary

Three or four lines naming your level, the practice areas or industries you know, and the kind of problems you solve. Match the language of the firm’s practice (strategy, operations, technology, people).

Experience

Reverse chronological. Group client projects under each employer and describe the problem, your role and what the client did. Respect confidentiality: describe clients by sector and size, not by name, unless the work is public.

Education

Degree, institution and dates. Consulting firms can screen on academics at entry level, so include relevant grades, awards or a business-school qualification if you have them.

Skills and tools

A short grouped list: analysis tools, languages and methods. Only list what you could use in a case interview or on day one.

Additional

Languages, leadership roles, case competition results and volunteering. These often decide between two similar candidates.

Formatting

  • Keep it to one page at analyst and consultant level; senior candidates can go to two if every line is a relevant project.
  • Write each bullet as problem, action and result, and start it with a strong verb such as led, built, sized or designed.
  • Describe clients by sector and scale (a national grocery retailer) rather than by name, unless the client has made the work public.
  • Use real outcomes you can explain in a case or fit interview; leave a number out rather than guess it.
  • Save as PDF with a clear file name such as firstname-lastname-consultant-resume.pdf.

Getting past applicant tracking systems

  • 1Mirror the practice area and skills in the advert, for example “operating model design” or “commercial due diligence”, where you have done that work.
  • 2Use standard headings: Experience, Education, Skills, Additional.
  • 3Keep the main content in a single column; text boxes and tables can be read out of order.
  • 4Write out tool names in full (Microsoft Excel, Tableau) rather than as logos or icons.
  • 5Spell out abbreviations once, for example “mergers and acquisitions (M&A)”.

Common mistakes

  • Listing projects without saying what you personally did on them.
  • Naming confidential clients or sharing figures the client has not made public.
  • Using consulting jargon (“drove synergies”) instead of plain descriptions of the work.
  • Burying the most relevant project under older, less relevant ones within the same employer.
  • Sending one resume to strategy, technology and operations practices without tailoring it.

Common questions

How long should a consultant resume be?

One page is the norm for analyst and consultant roles. Senior consultants and managers can use two pages when the second page holds relevant client work.

Can I name my clients on my resume?

Only if the work is public or you have permission. Otherwise describe the client by sector and size, such as a FTSE 250 insurer or a regional hospital group, which tells the reader the same thing without breaking confidentiality.

What if I have no consulting experience?

Show consulting-style work from other settings: a project where you analysed a problem, recommended a change and saw it adopted. University consulting clubs, case competitions and process improvements at work all count.

Is a consulting CV different in the UK and India?

The content is the same. In the UK the document is usually called a CV, and official careers advice is to leave off date of birth, marital status and nationality. In India some employers’ forms ask for extra personal details; give them only where the application asks.
