Accountant Resume Example
A sample accountant resume, with summaries by level, accounting skills and software to list, month-end and audit bullets, and how to show CPA or ACA.

The short answer
A strong Accountant resume opens with a short summary, groups the skills employers will test, and backs each role with bullets that show what changed because of your work. Below is a full example, summary wording for graduate or trainee, career changer, mid level and senior or financial controller candidates, and how to get through applicant tracking systems.
- One page for trainees and assistants; two pages for qualified and senior accountants.
- Proofread every number and date; mistakes stand out more on an accountant’s resume than anywhere else.
- Describe the scale of the work (entities, currencies, systems) without inventing figures.
An accountant resume is read by people who notice errors, so accuracy and clarity matter from the first line. Employers want to see which parts of the accounting cycle you own, the systems you use, the size and type of organisation you work in, and any professional qualification you hold or are working towards. This guide covers each section with a sample accountant resume, summaries for every level, bullets for month-end, reporting and audit work, and how to present qualifications such as the US CPA licence or the UK ACA.

What to include
Header
Name, location, email and LinkedIn. Put a professional designation after your name only if you hold it, for example “CPA” in the US or “ACA” in the UK.
Summary
Your level, qualification status, sector, systems and the kind of role you want.
Skills and systems
Group technical accounting skills, standards and software. Name the exact systems the advert lists if you use them.
Experience
Reverse chronological. Show which parts of the cycle you own, the size and type of organisation, and what you improved.
Qualifications and education
Degree and professional qualification with status: qualified, part-qualified (with exams passed) or studying. In the US, CPAs are licensed by their state board of accountancy after passing a national exam and meeting state requirements, so name the state.
Formatting
- One page for trainees and assistants; two pages for qualified and senior accountants.
- Proofread every number and date; mistakes stand out more on an accountant’s resume than anywhere else.
- Describe the scale of the work (entities, currencies, systems) without inventing figures.
- Keep qualifications easy to find, near the top if they are a requirement of the role.
- Send as PDF and name the file with your name and the role.
Getting past applicant tracking systems
- 1Write qualification names in full once, for example “Certified Public Accountant (CPA)” or “ICAEW Chartered Accountant (ACA)”.
- 2Match software names to the advert, such as “Sage 200” or “NetSuite”.
- 3Include the standards you work under, such as IFRS or US GAAP, if the advert mentions them.
- 4Use standard headings and avoid tables for the main content.
- 5Use the advert’s job title where it fits, such as “Management Accountant” or “Staff Accountant”.
Common mistakes
- Describing tasks (“processed invoices”) with no sense of ownership or improvement.
- Unclear qualification status, such as listing a designation you have not yet been awarded.
- Leaving out the systems you use.
- Typos or inconsistent dates, which suggest weak attention to detail.
- Overloading the resume with every past role instead of the relevant ones.
Common questions
What should I put on an accountant resume?
A summary with your qualification status, grouped skills and systems, experience that shows which parts of the cycle you own and what you improved, and your education and professional qualifications.
How do I show a qualification I am still studying for?
Name the qualification, the body and how far you are, for example “ACCA: 9 of 13 exams passed” or “CPA candidate”. Do not use the designation after your name until it is awarded.
Is a resume for a staff accountant different from a senior one?
The structure is the same. Senior resumes put more weight on ownership, controls, team leadership and partnering with the business.
Which accounting software should I list?
The systems you use confidently, with the advert’s systems first. Excel skills are worth naming specifically.
Should I use a CV or a resume?
Use the term and format of the country you are applying in. UK and Indian employers usually ask for a CV of up to two pages; US employers for a resume of one or two.
