Warehouse Worker Job Description

The role in brief

A warehouse worker receives, stores, picks, packs and ships goods, keeping stock records accurate and the floor safe. The job is physical and repetitive, usually on shifts that include nights or weekends, and most people learn it on the job without formal qualifications. A good description states the real physical demands, the shift pattern and the equipment the person will operate, because those three things decide who applies and who stays.

  • Unload inbound deliveries, check goods against the purchase order or shipping notice, and log damaged or short items
  • Put stock away in its assigned location and scan every move so the warehouse system matches the shelf
  • Pick customer orders from pick lists or a handheld scanner, accurately and at the pace the shift needs
  • Pack, label and stage orders for dispatch, and load outbound trucks in route or stop order

Compensation and environment

Work environment

Warehouses, distribution centres and stockrooms, sometimes cold stores or unheated buildings. The work is on foot for the whole shift, with lifting, bending and repetitive movement, and BLS lists hand labourers and material movers among the occupations with the highest rates of injury and illness. Shifts vary and often include nights and weekends; part-time and seasonal roles are common.

Career growth

Common next steps are forklift or reach-truck operator, team lead, inventory or stock control clerk, shipping and receiving coordinator, and warehouse supervisor. People who learn the planning and systems side move into logistics coordination, operations and supply chain roles.

Common questions

What are the roles and responsibilities of a warehouse worker?

A warehouse worker receives deliveries, puts stock away, picks and packs orders, loads outbound shipments and keeps inventory records accurate. Depending on the site, the job can also include cycle counts, returns processing and driving pallet jacks or forklifts. Safety runs through all of it: clear aisles, correct lifting and reporting hazards before they cause an injury.

What should a warehouse job description include?

State the shift pattern, the physical demands with real weights and time on foot, the equipment the person will use, whether forklift driving is part of the job, and how performance is measured, such as pick accuracy or orders per hour. Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, a written description prepared before you advertise or interview counts as evidence of the essential functions of the job (42 U.S.C. 12111(8)), so list the physical tasks that genuinely are essential and leave out the ones that are occasional.

Do warehouse workers need forklift certification?

Only if they will operate one. OSHA's powered industrial truck standard (29 CFR 1910.178(l)) makes the employer train each operator through formal instruction, practical training and an evaluation in the workplace, then certify it with the operator's name, the dates and the trainer. Earlier training from another job can count, but only after you have evaluated the person on your own trucks and found them competent. Operators are re-evaluated at least every three years, and refresher training is required after an accident, a near miss, unsafe driving or a change of truck type.

Is a warehouse worker the same as a warehouse associate or picker packer?

Usually, yes. Employers use warehouse worker, warehouse associate, material handler, picker packer and order selector for the same core job, and BLS groups much of the work under stockers and order fillers and hand labourers and material movers. Use the title your applicants search for, then let the responsibilities show whether the role leans towards picking, receiving, loading or equipment operation.

How do you screen applicants for a warehouse worker role?

Check the things that rule people in or out first: shift availability, the physical demands and, for forklift roles, age and prior experience. Then look at what predicts performance on the floor. A short exercise matching SKUs on a pick list, a count of mixed stock, or a scenario about a damaged pallet blocking an aisle shows accuracy and safety judgement far better than a CV does.
