What is proctoring in an online test?
Proctoring is the supervision of a test while someone takes it, to confirm who is taking it and that they follow the rules; online, it is done remotely through software, a live supervisor or both.

Depending on the settings, online proctoring can record the webcam, microphone or screen, log when you switch tabs or paste text, and ask for ID before you start. Anything unusual is flagged for a person at the employer or school to review. A flag is a prompt for that review and is not, by itself, a finding of cheating.
If a test says “proctoring enabled”, read what is monitored, close other applications, sit somewhere quiet with your face well lit, and keep anything you are not allowed to use out of reach. If you need an adjustment for a disability, ask the employer before you start.
Also called: online proctoring, remote proctoring, proctored test.
Example
An online coding test opens with a webcam check and a notice that tab changes and pasted code are recorded. Midway, the candidate’s connection drops, and the log shows the gap so the reviewer can see what happened.
