What is onboarding?

Onboarding is the process of welcoming a new employee into an organisation and helping them become productive, from the accepted offer through their first weeks and months, covering paperwork, equipment, training, relationships and expectations.

What is onboarding?

Onboarding is broader than orientation. Orientation is the first day or week of introductions and administration. Onboarding runs longer, often through the first 90 days or the probation period, and covers four things: compliance (contracts, right-to-work checks, tax and payroll forms, policies), clarification (what the job is, what good looks like, how performance will be judged), culture (how the organisation works and what it values) and connection (the people the new hire needs to know).

A practical onboarding process has stages. Before day one, send the contract and practical details, prepare equipment and system access, and assign a buddy. On day one, focus on welcome and essentials rather than a pile of reading. In the first week, give the new hire a real but manageable task and introductions to key colleagues. In the first 30, 60 and 90 days, hold short check-ins against written goals, ending with the probation review.

Onboarding is where hiring promises meet reality, which is why first-year attrition is often an onboarding signal. If what the new hire was told during recruitment does not match the job, they notice within weeks. Giving managers a checklist and making them, not HR alone, responsible for the first 90 days is the single biggest improvement most organisations can make.

For remote and hybrid hires, plan the connection part deliberately: scheduled introductions, a named buddy and regular video check-ins replace the informal learning that happens in an office.

Also called: employee onboarding, onboarding process, new hire onboarding.

Example

A new marketing executive receives her laptop and logins two days before she starts, along with a first-week plan. Her buddy takes her to lunch on day one, she ships a small campaign update in week two, and her manager reviews a written 30-60-90 day plan with her at each milestone.
