TikTok Interview Questions, Process and Online Assessment

The short answer

TikTok jobs are listed at lifeattiktok.com. ByteDance, the company behind TikTok, describes its process as an application, an assessment or task (common for technical roles), several rounds of phone, video or onsite interviews, then an offer, usually about a month from resume to offer. Prepare for questions on the ByteStyle values, your experience and why you want the role. Your recruiter confirms the exact process.

  • For intern and graduate technical roles, ByteDance says an online coding assessment is typical, depending on location, and you can choose your language.
  • ByteDance recommends waiting six months before reapplying to the same role.
  • Early career applicants can apply to up to two positions per programme in each half-year period.
  • Submit your resume in English and highlight leadership, creativity and innovation.

TikTok's open roles are listed on its careers site, lifeattiktok.com, which ByteDance's careers site links to as "Careers @ TikTok". ByteDance, the company behind TikTok, publishes a hiring process of an application, an assessment or task for many technical roles, several rounds of interviews, and an offer. It says the whole process usually takes about one month.

TikTok's own careers site wasn't reachable when we checked, so the details below come from ByteDance's careers site. ByteDance lists TikTok careers separately, so TikTok's process for your role may differ. ByteDance's FAQ says your recruiter will tell you the specific process for the position you applied for.

What is the TikTok interview process?

Expect several rounds of phone, video or onsite interviews, often after an assessment for technical roles. ByteDance's FAQ says the process "varies depending on the team and the role", and that an assessment, test or task plus several rounds of interviews is common. Its early careers FAQ says most interviews are online.

ByteDance's How we hire page suggests talking to your recruiter before the interview so you know what's required. It doesn't publish the number of rounds or what each one covers.

What is the TikTok hiring process?

You apply online, complete any pre-screening the role requires, interview, and receive an offer if you're selected. For students and graduates, ByteDance's early careers page names the steps as online application, pre-screening activities, interviews, and receive offer and next steps.

Points from ByteDance's FAQs:

  • Apply through the careers site. Email applications aren't accepted.
  • Write your resume in English, keep it concise, and highlight examples of leadership, creativity and innovation.
  • Track your status under "My applications" on the careers site. Applications made through third-party job boards don't show there.
  • Early careers limits: you can apply for up to two Early Career positions per programme in each application period (January to June and July to December). The limit covers ByteDance and its affiliates' jobs globally, and doesn't apply to PhD and Project Intern roles.
  • Most intern and graduate roles open in early August and are processed on a rolling basis, so apply early.

Does TikTok have an online assessment?

For many technical roles, yes. ByteDance's early careers FAQ says that depending on the location, technical roles typically require an online assessment of your coding skills, and that you can use the programming language of your choice.

ByteDance doesn't publish the platform, the number of questions, the time limit or a pass mark. If your invitation names a platform, our guides to the HackerRank test and the Codility test explain how those platforms work in general.

Some roles use a longer assessment instead. ByteDance says assessments "can be virtual or in person and may take a few hours", can include group exercises, and advises you to make sure you understand each task, get your ideas across and draw others into group discussions.

How long does the TikTok hiring process take?

About one month, according to ByteDance. Its FAQ says that from submitting your resume to receiving an offer, the process "usually lasts one month", with exceptions depending on hiring and application volume. Interviews happen on a rolling basis.

What happens after a TikTok interview?

If you're already in the interview process and aren't selected, ByteDance says you'll be told. ByteDance's early careers FAQ says it can't give individual feedback. A candidate survey email isn't a sign either way; ByteDance sends it to all candidates. If you need to reschedule, tell your recruiter as soon as possible. For accessibility needs, ask your recruiter to connect you with the interview accommodations team.

If you're not successful, ByteDance recommends a six-month gap before applying to the same role again.

What are common TikTok interview questions?

Neither TikTok nor ByteDance publishes its interview questions. These are questions to prepare, built from ByteDance's ByteStyle values on its culture page and its interview tips. Answer the "tell me about a time" questions in STAR form.
