Shopify's interview process starts when you apply to a discipline or one of its generalist postings on shopify.com/careers. Its careers page says only "We'll find the right fit during interviews", but its job postings and internship site fill in more: recruiters run a Life Story interview, and engineering internships add online assessments and a Craft Assessment interview with an engineer.
Everything below comes from Shopify's own careers pages and postings, checked 27 October 2026. Where Shopify doesn't say something, we say so.
The Shopify interview process at a glance
| Stage | What happens | What Shopify publishes |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Apply | Pick a discipline or a generalist posting and apply online. | Shopify may use AI-enabled tools to screen applications; recruiters review every output |
| 2. Assessments (some roles) | Engineering & Data interns get emailed assessments of their technical skills. | About an hour; required for interns. Not published for full-time roles |
| 3. Craft interview (some roles) | Interns meet a Shopify engineer. You're told beforehand what to prepare. | Format not published |
| 4. Life Story interview | A recruiter digs into your career story to judge fit for Shopify. | Final interview for interns |
| 5. Decision | Successful candidates get an offer. Interns are placed on teams by interest and skill. | No timeline published |
What is the Shopify interview process?
You apply, complete any assessment the role needs, meet the people who do the work, and have a Life Story interview with a recruiter. Shopify doesn't publish the number of rounds for full-time roles, and it will vary by discipline. Your recruiter can tell you what's next for your role.
Applying
- Choose a discipline or go generalist. The careers page asks you to "Select a discipline that matches your expertise or hit up our generalist postings."
- Show proof of your work. Shopify's Extraordinary page opens with "Screw the resume" and asks you to "Prove it". Its postings close with "We hire people, not resumes." Link work people can see: shipped products, code, writing, campaigns.
- Expect AI in screening. Postings say Shopify "may use AI-enabled tools to screen, select, and assess applications," and that the recruitment team reviews and validates all AI outputs.
- Early-career routes are separate: the Dev Degree programme, 4-month paid engineering internships, a 12-month Apprentice Product Manager programme and a 6-month Design Apprentice Programme.

Hiring for roles like the ones at Shopify?
Cohesyve takes a job description, finds candidates, reaches out to them and runs an AI job simulation of the real work, then returns a ranked shortlist. Ten candidates free, no card.
Does Shopify have an online assessment?
For Engineering & Data internships, yes. Shopify's internship site says successful applicants are emailed "a series of mandatory assessments" that test technical skills and "your likelihood of success at Shopify". They should take about an hour, and Shopify says not to worry if you take more or less time.
Shopify doesn't publish whether full-time roles use the same assessments, or what the assessments contain. Treat question lists from prep sites as unconfirmed.
What is the Shopify Craft interview?
It's an interview with a Shopify engineer, the step after the assessments for Engineering & Data interns. Shopify says you'll be told ahead of time what to prepare. It doesn't publish the format, so follow the instructions it sends rather than general advice.
What is the Shopify Life Story interview?
It's a recruiter-led conversation about your whole career so far. A Shopify recruiter posting says recruiters "own the Life Story interview, where you dig deep into career stories to determine fit for Shopify." The internship site describes it as understanding "the themes of your journey so far, what you have learnt, and how you made a difference," and says you'll get preparation notes before it.
Expect to walk through your story in order, with follow-up questions on why you made each move and what changed because of you. It isn't a technical round.
How long does the Shopify hiring process take?
Shopify doesn't publish a timeline for any role. Internship applicants are told by Shopify whether they've progressed after the assessments. For other roles, ask your recruiter after your first conversation.
What does Shopify look for?
Shopify's careers page and postings repeat the same traits:
- Mission first. "Accept our mission" is a headline on the careers page, and postings ask you to "care deeply about what you do and about making commerce better for everyone."
- Pace. Postings ask whether you can "keep up with an unrelenting pace (the week, not the quarter)".
- Comfort with change. Candidates should "thrive on (rather than endure) change" and be resilient in ambiguity.
- Opinions. Shopify wants people who "bring critical thought and opinion" and embrace disagreement.
- AI at work. Postings ask you to "put AI agents and tools to work on the tasks they're built for, and focus on the work only humans can do." The careers page also links to CEO Tobi Lütke's memo on AI use.
- Digital-first working. Shopify is "Digital by Design", with offices people can drop into and a few in-person gatherings a year. Internships are different: interns work in an office at least three days a week.
Common Shopify interview questions
Shopify doesn't publish its questions. These are the questions its stated process and values point to, with how to answer each for Shopify. Prepare stories in STAR form, and use our list of behavioural interview questions for more practice.
1. Walk me through your life story.
This is the Life Story interview's core. Go in order, from early influences to now, and for each step say why you chose it, what you learned and what changed because of you. Shopify wants themes, so name them: "I keep moving towards problems nobody owns."
2. Why Shopify?
Tie your answer to the mission of making commerce better for everyone. Talk about a merchant, a store you built or a small business you know, rather than Shopify's size.
3. What have you built or shipped that you're proud of?
Shopify asks you to "prove it", so bring receipts: a link, a demo, a result. Explain your part, the decisions you made and what you'd change.
4. Tell me about a time you worked through a lot of ambiguity.
Pick a project where the goal or the path was unclear. Show how you made a call without full information, and how quickly you adjusted when you learned more.
5. Tell me about a time you shipped something fast.
Shopify talks about the pace of "the week, not the quarter". Describe how you cut scope, shipped, and improved the work after real feedback.
6. How do you use AI tools in your work?
Shopify asks people to put AI agents and tools to work on what they're built for. Give specific examples: what you hand to AI, what you check, and what you keep for yourself.
7. Tell me about a time you disagreed with a decision.
Shopify wants "critical thought and opinion". Show that you argued your case with evidence, listened, and then committed to the outcome to keep the work moving.
8. When did you grow the most, and what caused it?
Postings ask for "professional and personal hypergrowth". Describe a stretch that was uncomfortable, what you did to learn fast and how you work differently now.
9. Tell me about a time something you built failed.
Own the failure plainly. Explain what you missed, what you fixed and what you changed in how you work.
10. How do you work in a remote, digital-first team?
Give examples of clear written updates, decisions made in writing and working across time zones. Shopify says it works "Digital by Design".
11. For engineering roles: walk me through how you'd approach this problem.
Shopify doesn't publish the Craft interview's format, so prepare exactly what it tells you to. Think aloud, state trade-offs and check your own work as you go.
12. Do you have any questions for us?
Ask about the team's current bets, how they measure success in the first months and how they use AI day to day.
How to prepare for a Shopify interview
- Read the posting's "About you" list and prepare one story for each line.
- Collect your proof. Links to work you shipped matter more than a polished resume at Shopify.
- Rehearse your life story out loud, in order, with the themes named. A mock interview with honest feedback helps.
- Use Shopify as a merchant. Set up a test store or study one you know, so your "why Shopify" answer is concrete.
- Practise thinking aloud on technical problems if you're applying for engineering.
- Prepare AI examples from your real work.
- Do the assessments somewhere quiet, in one sitting if you can.
Practising realistic work tasks
Life Story interviews reward clear stories, and craft rounds reward doing the work well. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs free practice job simulations for job seekers so you can rehearse realistic tasks. It isn't affiliated with Shopify and doesn't use Shopify's assessments or questions.
