Scale AI Interview Process: Hiring Steps and Questions

The short answer

For a job at Scale AI, you apply to a posting on scale.com/careers and go through interviews. Scale doesn’t publish its interview rounds, so prepare around its six credos and the skills in the job post. If you’re not hired, Scale waits 90 days before reconsidering you for the same role. Contributor work through Outlier, which Scale operates, has its own onboarding with skill screenings.

  • Scale’s credos: Earn Customer Love, Team Flow, Quality is Our Cheat Code, Find the 20%, Write the Market and Three Moves Ahead.
  • Many public sector roles require an active Secret or TS/SCI security clearance.
  • Outlier contributors work as independent contractors, not employees, according to Outlier’s FAQ.
  • Scale doesn’t publish its interview questions, coding platform or timeline.

Scale AI's interview process starts with an application on scale.com/careers, followed by interviews for the role. Scale doesn't publish how many rounds there are, what they cover or how long the process takes. What it does publish is its six credos, its rules for reapplying, and separate routes for contributor work through Outlier and its Human Frontier Collective fellowship.

Everything below comes from Scale's careers pages, its job postings and the Outlier FAQ, checked 27 October 2026. Interview-prep sites publish detailed round-by-round accounts of Scale interviews, but Scale doesn't confirm them, so we haven't repeated them here. The interview questions are ones to prepare for, built on Scale's published credos.

Scale AI hiring process at a glance

There are three ways to work with Scale, and each is hired differently.

RouteWhat it isHow you're hired, in Scale's words
Employee rolesFull-time jobs in engineering, research, go-to-market, operations and the public sectorApply to a posting, then interviews. Rounds aren't published
University and intern rolesThe University Program for students and new grads, and the Intern ProgramApply to a university posting. Rounds aren't published

How do you apply to Scale AI?

Apply to a specific posting on Scale's careers page. Students and new grads apply through the separate University Student Careers page. Each posting lists what Scale needs, usually split into what you'll do and what you'd ideally have, so match your resume to it.

Check three things in the posting before you apply:

  • Security clearance. Many public sector postings require an active Secret or TS/SCI clearance, and some say candidates without one won't be considered.
  • Location. It varies by posting: some roles are hybrid in San Francisco or New York, some are fully in the office, and some are remote.
  • Contract type. Fellowship and some growth roles are contract positions.

If you need an accommodation during the application or interviews, Scale's postings ask you to email accommodations@scale.com.

What are the Scale AI interview rounds?

Scale doesn't publish them. Its careers pages and postings don't say how many rounds there are, who runs them or what each covers. Ask your recruiter for the format of each round when you're first contacted.

What you can prepare for with confidence is Scale's credos. Scale describes them as "a framework for us to make decisions and work effectively as a team", so expect interviewers to look for them in your examples.

Does Scale AI have an online assessment?

For employee roles, Scale doesn't publish one. Some Human Frontier Collective fellow postings include a brief challenge task before the interview. For Outlier, yes: its onboarding includes skill screenings, and each project has its own qualification step where you review the guidelines and complete assessment tasks.

Scale doesn't say which platform any coding test uses. If an invitation comes from HackerRank or CodeSignal, our guides to the HackerRank test and the CodeSignal GCA explain how those formats work in general.

How long does the Scale AI hiring process take?

Scale doesn't publish a timeline for employee roles. The only timings it gives are for contributor routes: Outlier says its general onboarding typically takes 30 to 90 minutes, and the Human Frontier Collective reviews applications on a rolling basis. Ask your recruiter what to expect after each round.

What happens if you're not hired at Scale AI?

Scale's postings say its policy requires a 90-day waiting period before it reconsiders a candidate for the same role. You can apply to a different role in the meantime. Use the 90 days to close the gap the interview showed.

How does hiring work for Outlier and the Human Frontier Collective?

These are contractor routes, separate from employee hiring.

Outlier is a platform operated by Scale AI where experts do AI training work, such as writing prompts, ranking AI outputs and improving model responses. The Outlier FAQ says:

  • You work as an independent contractor, not an employee.
  • You need at least an associate degree. Some projects need a bachelor's, master's or PhD.
  • To apply you need a valid ID and mobile phone from your country, a current resume and a LinkedIn profile.
  • Onboarding typically takes 30 to 90 minutes: creating an account, choosing your areas of expertise, skill screenings and identity verification.
  • Each project then has its own onboarding, with guidelines to review and assessment tasks to complete.
  • Screening is selective, and Outlier doesn't sponsor visas.

The Human Frontier Collective is a fellowship for researchers and domain experts who design problems and datasets to evaluate AI models. Scale's postings describe it as a fully remote, independent contractor role. The application process varies by posting. Every one starts with an application reviewed on a rolling basis and ends with an invitation to join. Most fellow routes include an interview about your research experience, professional background and alignment with Scale's mission, and some fellow postings add a brief challenge task before it to test your domain expertise. The Creative Advisor route uses a portfolio review and a conversation with the team instead.

What Scale AI looks for: its credos

Scale's careers page lists six credos:

CredoWhat Scale says it means
Earn Customer LoveDevoted to customers' and contributors' success; trust is earned with every interaction and delivery
Team FlowWork as one Scale; ideas and support flow across teams; optimise for the whole
Quality is Our Cheat CodeSystems that deliver quality consistently are a structural advantage
Find the 20%Find the inputs that drive most outcomes and execute them completely, even when the work is tedious
Write the MarketResearch that puts Scale at the frontier, bringing partners there first
Three Moves AheadConsider the consequences of consequences, and plan accordingly

Its university page adds that Scale's culture values ownership, speed and truth-seeking.

Scale AI interview questions and how to answer them

These are questions to prepare for, not a list Scale publishes. Each answer guide ties back to a credo or to what Scale's postings ask for.

1. Why Scale?

Connect your answer to Scale's mission, developing reliable AI systems for the world's most important decisions, and to the part of the business you'd join: the data engine behind frontier models, enterprise GenAI, or the public sector. Read the news items on its careers page so you can mention something current.

2. Tell me about a time you earned a customer's trust.

This is Earn Customer Love. Scale says trust is earned with every delivery, so pick an example where you delivered repeatedly or recovered from a problem. The credo covers contributors as well as customers, so an example about supporting the people doing the work also fits.

3. Tell me about a time you caught a quality problem before it reached a customer.

This is Quality is Our Cheat Code. Explain how you noticed it, what you changed in the process so it wouldn't happen again, and what it saved. Scale's credo talks about the systems that deliver quality, so describe the check or process you put in place.

4. Tell me about a time you stopped working on something because it wasn't having an impact.

This is Find the 20%, which says Scale rejects "effort without impact". Show how you worked out which inputs mattered, what you dropped and what happened to the results.

5. Tell me about a tedious, detailed task you saw through to the end.

Find the 20% also says Scale executes completely "even when the work is tedious or meticulous". Pick an example where precision mattered, such as data cleaning, a migration or an audit, and say how you kept the quality up.

6. Tell me about a time you helped another team at some cost to your own.

This is Team Flow and its line "optimize for the whole". Explain the trade-off, why the wider result mattered more, and how you managed your own commitments.

7. Walk me through a decision where you thought about second-order effects.

This is Three Moves Ahead. Describe the decision, the consequences you anticipated beyond the obvious one, and how that changed your plan.

8. What's a development in AI you think most people are underestimating?

This fits Write the Market. Give a specific view with reasons, and say what it would mean for Scale's customers. Back it with your own reasoning or evidence.

9. How would you measure the quality of training data or human feedback for a model?

For engineering, research and operations roles. Scale's products centre on high-quality data for AI models. Talk about clear task guidelines, agreement between reviewers, spot checks against expert answers, and how you'd find and fix systematic errors.

10. Tell me about something you owned from start to finish.

Scale's university page promises ownership from day one, so new-grad and intern candidates should expect this. Choose a project where you made the decisions, shipped something and dealt with the problems yourself.

11. How have you worked within security or compliance constraints?

For public sector roles, many of which require a clearance and some of which involve air-gapped or federal environments. Show you can deliver within strict rules and explain how you kept work moving.

12. Walk me through your research or domain expertise.

For the Human Frontier Collective, the interview covers your research experience, professional background and alignment with Scale's mission. Prepare a clear summary of your expertise and how it could help evaluate or improve AI models.

13. What questions do you have for us?

Ask what the team's biggest current priority is, how success is measured in the first months, and what the remaining interview rounds cover.

How to prepare for a Scale AI interview

  1. Read the posting closely and match your examples to its "you will" and "ideally you have" lists.
  2. Learn the six credos and prepare at least one story for each. Use the STAR method to structure them.
  3. Ask your recruiter how many rounds there are and what each covers, since Scale doesn't publish it.
  4. Practise technical work relevant to the role, such as coding, system design or data quality problems, and explain your reasoning as you go.
  5. Read Scale's recent news on its careers page so your "Why Scale?" answer is current.
  6. Run a mock interview with someone who'll challenge your answers. Our list of behavioural interview questions gives you more to practise on.

Practising realistic work tasks

Scale's credos are about delivering work to a high standard, and that's easiest to show when you've practised real tasks. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. It isn't affiliated with Scale AI and doesn't use Scale AI's interview questions or assessments.
