Rivian Interview Questions and Hiring Process

The short answer

Rivian’s hiring process has three stages: a first conversation with its Talent Acquisition team, team interviews (one-on-one, panels, presentations or group interviews) and a hiring decision after the team debriefs. Rivian suggests answering with its PSI method (Problem, Solution, Impact) and says it looks for people who can be very specific about what they’ve done.

  • The format of the team interviews varies by role. Ask your recruiter what yours will involve.
  • PSI means: what was the problem, what did you do and own, and what was the measurable result.
  • Never share confidential information from a current or former employer. Rivian asks you not to.
  • Rivian doesn’t publish a timeline or say whether any role has an online test.

Rivian's hiring process has three stages: a conversation with a recruiter, interviews with the team and a hiring decision. Rivian says the process may vary by team or role, and it recommends a structure for your answers that it calls the PSI method.

Everything below comes from Rivian's own careers and company pages, linked as we go. Where Rivian doesn't say something, we say so rather than guess.

What is the Rivian interview process?

You speak to a recruiter first, then meet the team in one or more interviews, then the team decides together. The interview process "is designed to understand who you are, what you do and how you do it", in Rivian's words on its careers page.

The recruiter conversation

Your first conversation is with a member of Rivian's Talent Acquisition team, who will tell you about the open role and ask about your experience and skill set. Treat it as a real interview. Have a two-minute summary of your background ready, and know why this role at Rivian interests you.

This is also the moment to ask how the rest of the process works for your role: who you'll meet, in what format, and roughly how long it takes. Rivian itself recommends connecting with your recruiter for those details.

The team interviews

If the first conversation goes well, Rivian says you'll have "several opportunities" to meet the team. The format depends on the role and can be:

  • one-on-one interviews with a hiring manager or teammate;
  • panels, with several interviewers at once;
  • presentations, where you present work or a problem to the team;
  • group interviews.

Rivian doesn't publish how many rounds there are, how long each lasts or whether they're in person or by video. Ask.

The hiring decision

After your interviews, "the team will come together to debrief", and your recruiter reaches out to discuss the team's decision and outline next steps. Rivian doesn't publish how long this takes or what an offer includes.

How long does the Rivian hiring process take?

Rivian doesn't publish a timeline for full-time roles. For internships it does: applications open from September to October, interviews run from October to March, and the summer programme runs May to September. Rivian adds that contact times may vary because of the high volume of applicants.

Does Rivian have an online assessment?

Rivian's careers pages don't mention an online assessment or coding test for any role. If you're sent one, the invitation will name the platform and the rules. For the formats you're most likely to meet in engineering hiring, our guides to the HackerRank test and the CodeSignal General Coding Assessment explain how they work. Only use them if your invite actually names one.

What is the PSI method Rivian recommends?

PSI is Rivian's suggested way to structure interview answers: Problem, Solution, Impact. It works like the STAR method, with more weight on what you personally owned.

PartRivian's promptWhat to say
ProblemWhat task was involved? The situation and why it mattered, in two or three sentences
SolutionWhat action did you take? What did you own?Your own decisions and actions, using "I", with enough detail to be specific
ImpactWhat were the results or measure of success? The outcome, and how you knew it worked

Rivian's VP of Talent Acquisition, Cindy Nicola, puts it plainly: "We look for people who can be incredibly specific about what they've done." Vague team answers ("we improved the process") fall short of that standard. Name the tool, the number you were trying to move, the trade-off you made.

Common Rivian interview questions and how to answer them

Rivian doesn't publish its interview questions. These are questions to prepare for, chosen from what Rivian says it looks for: specificity, ownership, passion and determination to create an impact, and fit with its mission.

1. "Tell me about yourself."

Keep it to two minutes: what you do now, one achievement told with real detail, and why this Rivian role is the next step. Rivian's Chief People Officer, Helen Russell, says the interviews that stand out are those where people use life experiences to show passion and determination to create an impact. A short personal reason for caring about the work can help, as long as it connects back to the job.

2. "Why Rivian?"

Rivian's stated mission is to "Keep the World Adventurous Forever". Go further than "I like electric vehicles". Mention something specific from Rivian's company page or newsroom, such as its in-house hardware and software, its R2 vehicle or its plant in Normal, Illinois, and say how your role would contribute to it.

3. "Tell me about the hardest problem you've solved."

This is the question Rivian's own recruiting lead hints at: "If you've ever solved a really tough problem, you never forget it." Pick a problem that was genuinely hard, then answer in PSI form. Spend most of your time on what you tried, what didn't work and what you did next.

4. "Walk me through a project you owned from start to finish."

Rivian's PSI prompt asks "What did you own?" Separate your work from the team's. Say what you decided, what you built or delivered, and what you'd do differently. Leave out anything confidential from your employer, which Rivian asks you not to share.

5. "Tell me about a time you found a new way to solve an old problem."

Rivian employees on its work page talk about being open to new solutions. Choose an example where you questioned the usual approach, tested something different and can show the result.

6. "How do you measure whether your work was successful?"

This is the Impact part of PSI asked directly. Give the measure you used (time saved, defects reduced, customers helped, a deadline met) and how you tracked it. If the outcome was mixed, say so and explain what you learned.

7. "Tell me about a time you worked with a team outside your own."

Rivian says its hardware and software platforms are developed in-house and work together, so be ready to show you can work across functions. Describe how you agreed on goals, handled a disagreement and kept work moving.

8. "Tell me about a time something went wrong."

Own the mistake, keep the setup short and spend most of the answer on what you did to fix it and what changed afterwards. Specific detail matters as much here as in your success stories.

9. "Why this team, and what would you want to learn in your first few months?"

Show that you've read the job description closely. Name two or three parts of the role you'd tackle first and what you'd need to learn to do them well.

10. For a presentation round: "Present a piece of work you're proud of."

If your process includes a presentation, structure it the same way: the problem, your solution and the impact. Leave time for questions, and prepare for follow-ups on why you made each choice. Check with your recruiter what the brief, length and audience will be.

11. "What questions do you have for us?"

Rivian says to come with questions specific to the team or role. It suggests asking about the scope of the role, what the team is aiming for, how the team evaluates success and how the work supports Rivian's mission. Our list of behavioural interview questions is a good bank for practising the rest.

How to prepare for a Rivian interview

  1. Read the job description line by line and match a PSI story to each main requirement.
  2. Write five or six PSI stories covering a hard problem, ownership of a project, a new solution, cross-team work, a setback and a result you measured.
  3. Make every story specific. Add the numbers, tools and decisions. Rivian says this is what it looks for.
  4. Remove anything confidential from your examples, as Rivian asks.
  5. Ask your recruiter about the format of your team interviews, and prepare a presentation if there is one.
  6. Read Rivian's company page and one recent newsroom story so your "Why Rivian?" answer is specific.
  7. Practise out loud, ideally in a mock interview with someone who will push back on vague answers.
  8. Prepare two or three questions about the team's goals and how success is measured.
