OpenAI interviews in four stages: a resume review, an introductory call, a skills-based assessment and a final round of interviews. Its questions centre on what you've owned, how fast you learn, how you reason out loud and why you care about its mission.
The process details below come from OpenAI's interview guide and from OpenAI's recruiters speaking at an OpenAI Forum event posted in September 2025. Where OpenAI doesn't say something, we say so.
The OpenAI hiring process at a glance
| Stage | What happens | What OpenAI says about timing |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Application and resume review | The recruiting team reviews your application. | Typically one week |
| 2. Introductory call | A conversation with the hiring manager or a recruiter about your background, motivations and goals. | Scheduled by a recruiting coordinator by email |
| 3. Skills-based assessment | Pair coding, a take-home project, a technical test or similar, depending on the team. | You hear within a week whether you've progressed |
| 4. Final interviews | About 4 to 6 hours with 4 to 6 people, over one or two days. | You should hear within one week of your finals |
What is the OpenAI hiring process?
You apply, the recruiting team reviews your resume, and if there's a fit you move through an introductory call, a skills assessment and final interviews. OpenAI's guide says it isn't credential-driven: it wants to understand your background and what you could contribute. It hires people who are already experts and people who aren't yet specialised but show "high potential", which it defines as having shown you can ramp up quickly in a new domain and produce results.
At the Forum event, OpenAI's recruiting team said sourcers usually handle the early stages, including a first call and a technical screen, and recruiters take over for the final interviews and the offer.

What happens in the resume review?
The recruiting team reviews your application and resume, which OpenAI says typically takes a week. OpenAI's recruiters said at the Forum event that what stands out on a resume is ownership, more than any single credential. Show work you took from start to finish, with the result in numbers where you can.
What happens in the introductory call?
A recruiting coordinator emails you to set up a conversation with the hiring manager or a recruiter. OpenAI says to be ready to discuss your work and academic experience, your motivations and your goals. Have a short, specific answer to "why OpenAI, and why this team?"
What is the OpenAI skills-based assessment?
It's a test of the skills the role needs, and its format depends on the team. OpenAI lists pair coding interviews, take-home projects and technical tests as examples, and some roles have more than one assessment. Within a week, the recruiting team tells you whether you're moving on.
For coding interviews, OpenAI's recruiters said at the Forum event that interviews run on CoderPad and that you're expected to explain your thought process out loud. They suggested practising data structures and algorithms, and getting used to CoderPad's editor if you normally code in a full IDE.
AI tools: OpenAI says expectations vary by interview. Some formats deliberately allow AI tools, and others are designed to assess how you solve problems without them. Your recruiter explains what's allowed in your preparation materials; if you're unsure, ask before the interview.
What is the OpenAI interview process in the final round?
The final round is about 4 to 6 hours of interviews with 4 to 6 people over one or two days, held virtually or in person at OpenAI's San Francisco office. The interviews go deeper into your area of expertise. For engineering roles, OpenAI says it looks for well-designed solutions, high-quality code, optimal performance and good test coverage. Across roles, it assesses communication and collaboration.
Expect behavioural questions about the mission. At an OpenAI Residency information session on the OpenAI Forum, an OpenAI speaker said many of the programme's behavioural interviews "circle back to the mission and vision".
What happens after the OpenAI interviews?
OpenAI says you should hear back within one week of your final interviews, and your recruiter may ask for references at this stage. OpenAI doesn't publish how long the whole process takes, its acceptance rate or how interviews are scored.
Common OpenAI interview questions and how to answer them
The first four questions were given as examples by OpenAI's recruiters at the Forum event. The rest are questions to prepare for, based on what OpenAI's guide says it looks for: ownership, fast learning, collaboration, communication, openness to feedback and alignment with its mission.
1. What interested you in OpenAI?
Be specific: a research paper, a product decision or a safety approach you've followed, and how it connects to the work this team does. OpenAI suggests reading its Charter, research and blog, and recent updates from the team you're interviewing for.
2. How does AI affect your life?
Give a concrete, honest example of how you use AI tools, including where they fall short. Showing you understand the limits is as useful as showing enthusiasm.
3. Tell me about a time you learned something new quickly.
This is OpenAI's "high potential" test. Pick a domain you didn't know, explain how you got up to speed and what you delivered. Use the STAR method and keep it to two or three minutes, as OpenAI's recruiters suggested.
4. What's the biggest technical challenge you've faced, and how did you approach it?
Explain the problem, the options you considered, why you chose one and the measurable result. Use specific data, such as the scale of users or the cost saved, which the recruiters recommended.
5. Tell me about something you owned from start to finish.
Ownership is what OpenAI's recruiters said stands out. Show that you defined the problem, made decisions, handled what went wrong and shipped.
6. Talk me through your approach to this problem.
In a coding or technical interview, say what you're thinking as you go: your first idea, its weaknesses and why you're changing course. OpenAI says interviewers want to see how you approach problems and communicate your reasoning.
7. Tell me about a time you received difficult feedback.
OpenAI names openness to feedback as something it values. Describe the feedback, how you reacted at first, and the change you made afterwards.
8. Tell me about a disagreement with a colleague.
Show collaboration: you understood their view, used evidence, and the team reached a better decision. Avoid stories where you were simply right.
9. How do you think about safety or risk in your work?
OpenAI's stated mission is to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity, and its recruiters listed concern for safety as part of their hiring philosophy. Give an example of spotting a risk, raising it and changing your plan, in your own field.
10. What would success look like in this role, and what could make it fail six months in?
OpenAI's recruiters raised these as later-stage questions. Show you understand the team's goals, name a realistic risk, and say how you'd catch it early.
11. Do you have any questions for us?
Ask about the team's current priorities, how it works with research or product, and what a strong first few months would look like.
How to prepare for the OpenAI interview
- Read OpenAI's Charter, research and blog, and recent updates from the team you're applying to, as OpenAI's guide suggests.
- Rewrite your resume around ownership and results, with numbers where you have them.
- Prepare five or six STAR stories covering ownership, fast learning, feedback, disagreement and a hard technical problem. Our list of behavioural interview questions gives you more to practise on.
- For coding roles, practise on a plain editor and explain your reasoning out loud as you go.
- Ask your recruiter what tools are allowed in each interview, including AI tools.
- Do a mock interview with someone who'll push back on your answers, so the final loop isn't your first long day of interviews.
- Plan your energy for 4 to 6 hours of interviews, possibly across two days.
Practising realistic work tasks
OpenAI's skills assessments test how you do the actual work, and that improves with practice on realistic tasks. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. It isn't affiliated with OpenAI and doesn't use OpenAI's interview questions or assessments.
FAQs
How long does the OpenAI interview process take?
OpenAI doesn't publish a total. Its guide says resume review typically takes a week, you hear within a week of the skills assessment whether you're moving on, and you should hear within a week of your final interviews.
How many interviews are in the OpenAI final round?
OpenAI says about 4 to 6 hours of interviews with 4 to 6 people, over one or two days.
